Some 'mature' and elderly women tip well, Sorcha. *G* I do.

My son's girlfriend works for less than minimum wage (I don't know how they can legally do this) and is supposed to be compensated by her share of a tip jar on the counter once her "training" shifts are over. Those depending on a tip jar may be the most poorly paid by their employer. Take pity! She works in a high end gourmet pizza/pasta/sandwich company serving from behind a counter. I've encouraged her to look for another job.

I don't do tip jars either. We have one elderly couple who leaves #1.50 regardless of the amount of the check. They are lovely people, on limited income, and come every day, so nobody minds.

I've noticed that mature women, not necessarily elderly, don't tip well and sometimes not at all.

I tend to overtip taxi drivers. I don't tip anyone who has not performed a personal service; for example, a tip jar beside a food-court cash register gets nothing from me.

If service is good I tip. If it's bad I complain (usually) and certainly don't tip at all.

I generally tip 20% and the easiest way for me to figure it out is $2 for every $10 on the bill (rounded up). Unless service is bad and then I'll drop it down to 10% or so, depending. My friend insists that you do not tip on the total bill, as then you are tipping on tax as well, but I think this is kind of a cheap way out of it, and it's usually not much different.

Generally 20% for table service and 10%(or an even buck) for the tip jar at the coffee house.

I'd go for the 10%-15% in the UK as well. But I'm never sure where to draw the line - I have paid bills as high as £150 - and I don't tip £15 - £20! I would prefer it if the restaurant added a service charge but if they do - do the staff always get it? Decisions, decisions...

Cheers

Well, I don't eat out much, but here in the UK I'd say a tip of 10-15% is more typical.

SORCHA -

Typical of those in the middle class reaching beyond their means.

May I suggest restraining "eating out," "having the car waxed," or "cosmotolist applications.....

Do it less - and tip more

20 to 25% is considered "standard" in the USA....unless.... you are a service patron of "Uncle Remus," "Burger King" or "Dennys." If this is your situation 05% to 10% is normal, because service is typical USA fast-food...and your 05% goes much further in a 3rd world country.

Sincerly,
Gargoyle

"lots of servers get paid minimum wage and really depend on the tips for a living."
Which is why I try to drop 20% unless I feel like the service was really substandard.

For the last ten years or so -- maybe longer, as I think about it -- 18-20% has been pretty much the norm. A lot of places will automatically add 18% for larger (6+) groups. An ex of mine, a career food server/bartender, pointed out that, among her colleagues, less than 18% was viewed as either cheap or uninformed and anything under 15% was downright insulting. Sometimes the insult is deserved. She also pointed out that lots of servers get paid minimum wage and really depend on the tips for a living. Oh yeah, this is in Portland, Oregon.

Around here (Baltimore-DC area), I'm given to understand that the rate has crept up to 20% among all right-thinking people. My own technique is to divide the bill by 6 and then adjust for performance from there. Exceptional servers get 20-25%, poor ones as low as 10%.

Got some questions....

How much do you tip? Here, for service the norm is 10 or 15% or $1 per plate, depending on service.

A penny as an insult for truly crappy service.

When are you overly generous? If ever?

Doesn't matter a lot, just curious

There are of course the parsimonious who don't tip at all, regardless.
