How could I have missed this the first time: "(The several misspellings aren't too profesional either)"? "Profesional"? Sorry, I ain't cuttin' this guy no slakk!

Well - okay - I will cut him some slack. But as for SRS - how do you explain this sentence: "Makes it damned hard to make sense of an article written in this way"? What's that saying about glass houses?

Wherever it was from, it's piss-poor writing. Choppy quotes, information smattered erratically, no topic sentences for paragraphs because there are mostly single sentences, no paragraphs to speak of. This is a classic example of what I hate about stories on the Internet (though this was no doubt published in print in the same sloppy fashion--this writer has a lot to learn). There are six places in the article where two sentences appear in sequence, but never more than two.

Makes it damned hard to make sense of an article written in this way.

SRS

Just pointing out the obvious.

I don't think John needs you to defend him. He's an intelligent person who can defend himself.

John in Kansas is a great catter who has helped many of us. He must have been having a bad day when he typed that angry post. Give him a little slack.

As for the newspaper -- in an age when most newspaper stories are downloaded from somewhere else, it was good to read an article such as that one, which was entirely original, to the point, and important to readers. To me that is more important than perfect English usage.

The thing I noticed wrong was the use of "poll" where "pole" should have been. Muscle memory, big deal!

Psychopaths are quite often good at fooling people. Plenty of perfectly sensible women (and men) have found themselves involved with charming and likeable people who turn out to be like that.

Kinda puts you in mind of George W. Bush. And I don't mean this as humor.

Correction to above: It was a News-Leader.com logo.

And the Missouri map on the ad for the Election Guide might have been a clue as well.

Gee, John. If you look at the article linked in the original post, you will see at the right of the banner, the Springfield News-Post logo, under which it reads, "Springfield, MO."

"#$@! hick town #$%! small town $%*^! provincialism.

(The several misspellings aren't too profesional either.)"

On behalf of all ignorant, inbred, sub-human citizens of hick towns, I'd like to apologize to you big-city sopisticates for our pig-headed provincialism, not to mention amateurish spelling. It must be frustrating for you to have to deal with us, but please remember, most of us didn't make it beyond grade to I mean too I mean tow.

The last similar story we had just days ago in Germany had the genders switched and a sad outcome. A mother has drowned her cute six years old son in a lake with no fishermen near.

Thanks for reading this. I needed to talk to somebody about it.

The Kansas City Star had a short article about this, but didn't say anything about Ivie's condition. It preyed upon my mind - was she in a coma, is she a human vegetable? Then it occurred to me to search the Springfield news for more details.

The Kansas City paper said she had been thrown off the bridge while tied to a tire. I think that must have been wrong.

If I had to place a bet on what is wrong with Kerns, I would choose a a one-word answer - methamphetamine. Missouri has one of the worst meth problems in the world.

Recently I saw an article in the Kansas City Star which said that law enforcement and social services are trying to co-ordinate their efforts for children who have been dwelling in meth labs. Sometimes they have burned lungs from the chemicals. The article quoted a rural Kansas sheriff who said something like, "I'm glad they're working with us. We never thought about this before."   (!)

Don't believe anybody who tells you this is "a child-centered nation."

And sadly, it only made the very local news.

The page linked for the story has no identification of where all this happened, except for an offhand reference to "Springfield" and the name of "Lake McDaniel." The "Ozark News" note at the top gives a clue that cuts the 148 "Springfield" locations found by my US CD map to somewhere in a (probably) 5 state area, where there are only about 34 "Springfields" and 5 "McDaniel lakes."

#$@! hick town #$%! small town $%*^! provincialism.

(The several misspellings aren't too profesional either.)

That said, it is a very nicely produced article with great visual appeal, and gives well-earned recognition to some deserving local boys from somewhere around Springfield Missouri (US).

There are some additional "related stories" linked, that do give the information that mother had kicked the guy out, and that he was under a restraining order for prior domestic abuse, although I didn't look at the details.

John

There are also quite a few nasty minded women out there who don't disclose the fact they have children until the man is reeled in and caught..... Mate of mine got caught that way.... ended up being a parent to a 14yr old boy, when he was only just 20.... he did like the older woman!

It's more common than you think. And it's harder to get away for a lot of women. Why do you think there are so many battered women's shelters?

Indeed, Jeff. My oversight. But the question I still have is, how did she get hooked up with a guy like Kerns in the first place?

Unless he's a Ted Bundy-like psychopath who's thoroughly charming until he lets the Monster out.

The mother had left the child with a babysitter while she went to be proposed to by her boyfriend. Not exactly irresponsible. Read the sidebar for the facts.

Incredible!

Kerns has got to be a psychopath, or at the very least, deeply disturbed, and obviously dangerous. And the mother (off with her boyfriend while Kerns kidnaps the little girl) seems to have less brains than God gives the average garden slug.

Cute little girl! She deserves better than the people around her. But kudoes to the three fishermen. Quick thinking and brave action. Heroes indeed.

You can read here the heart-warming story of three Missouri fishermen who rescued a five-year-old girl. Her mother's ex had thrown her off a bridge into a lake to die.

http://www.news-leader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060914/NEWS01/609140400

The "what the hell?" is my response to her mother's behavior. How the hell does a woman (apparently normal) marry a man that cruel, that arrogant, and that cold to her own child?

Are there no vibes anymore?

Well, anyway, hooray for those gallant fishermen.
