Subject: Lyr Req: men and boys (sing for joy?) From: leeneia Date: 20 Dec 17 - 11:05 AM A couple or five years ago, there was a thread on an old Christmas song that started with "Men and boys sing..." Maybe it was "Men and boys sing for joy..." I've searched the DT and the Forum, and can't find it. The words are a translation of a very old song in Latin. I have the tune. Does anybody know these lyrics or how to find them? The song has a verse about the wise men, and I would like to do it at our Three Kings party on Jan 1st. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: men and boys (sing for joy?) From: leeneia Date: 20 Dec 17 - 11:23 AM Yes, but not this morning. You may know it already, Joe. In the Catholic Breaking Bread book it appeared as "Gift of Love, Burning Bright." It was a song for Easter. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: men and boys (sing for joy?) From: leeneia Date: 20 Dec 17 - 10:54 PM Thanks, all and esp. Freddie. That's not what I remembered, but the lyrics from the 10-year-old thread will serve. I was reminded of the "men and boys" because I just heard it on the radio in the first line of the song. So I know I'm not imagining it. However, the words above have the 3 Kings, and that's what counts on Jan 1, National Pointless Day. The tune is Personent Hodie, as any schoolboy knows. :) Sing aloud, on this day, Children all, raise the lay, cheerfully we & they Hasten to adore thee, sent from highest glory For us born, born, born x 2 For us born on this morn, of the Virgin Mary Now a child he is born swaddling bands him adorn Manger bed he?ll not scorn, Ox & ass are near him We as Lord revere him And the vain. vain, vain x 2 And the vain powers of hell, Spoiled of prey now fear him. From the far Orient, guiding star wise men sent, Him to seek their intent, Lords of all creation Kneel in adoration. Gifts of gold, gold, gold x 2 Gifts of gold, frankincense Myrrh for their oblation. All must join him in praise, men & boys voices raised, On this day of all days, Angel voices ringing, Christmas tidings bringing. Join we all, all, all x 2 Join we all Gloria In Excelsis singing. Now I see that "men and boys" occurs in the last verse. This is going to be fun. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: men and boys (sing for joy?) From: RTim Date: 21 Dec 17 - 12:59 PM This the version sung by Noel Sing We Clear on their 4th recording. Tim Radford The Boys' Carol Piae Cantiones, a book of Latin carols compiled in Finland in 1582, gives us The Boys' Carol, with a translation of the original text from Elizabeth Poston's Penguin Book of Christmas Carols. Let the boys' cheerful noise Sing today none but joys Praise aloud, clear and proud, Praise to Him in chorus, Given from heaven for us. Virgin-born, born, born, Virgin-born, born, born, Virgin-born, on that morn Procreated for us. He who rules heaven and earth Lies in stall at His birth, Humble beasts at his feet See the Light eternal Vanquish realms infernal. Satan's done, done, done, Satan's done, done, done, Satan's done, God has won Victory supernal. Magi come from afar, See their sun, tiny one, Follow far little star, At the crib adoring, Man to God restoring. Gold and myrrh, myrrh, myrrh, Gold and myrrh, myrrh, myrrh, Gold and myrrh offered there, Incense for adoring. Man and boy, join in joy, Sing as heaven sings for joy, God this day here doth stay, Pour we forth the story Of His might and glory. So to God, God, God, So to God, God, God, So to God, glory be, In the highest, glory. |
