I was talking to a newly found second cousin (I have no knoweldge of my father's family basically) and he said our great grandmother, Maggie Lyons, daughter of a Cornelius Lyons, born 1833 or so, lived in Clermont Iowa...(would love to find her mother's name)...married to Timothy Garvey from Ballyferriter Ireland..

Anyway, he was saying she wore petticoats of a particular color, notsure which...and smoked a clay pipe (which I vaguely remember my father saying something about)...and these two items are supposed to be a clue as to where she might have come from. She was in Iowa by the 1850s I believe...so does anyone have a clue?

Also, the Garvey brothers, at last some of them, apparently worked on teh canals (I always thought it was railroads but canals make sense) in West Virginia?/ Are there canals in West Virginia? And something to do with a town called Berekely in the east coast of US. New YHork? I think he said something about the Erie canal....it gets interesting...where did the Erie start and stop? Icould google but I can't at work ad I am at work right now, but now signed in yet....)

I'm going to guess it was the C&O canal and Berkeley Springs. The C&O Canal ran from Georgetown (Washington DC, now) to cumberland Md. along the Potomac River, and stopped at or near Berkeley Springs, WV.I am assuming the canal that runs through Georgetown is a remnant of the C&O Canal. The C&O railroad also ran a similiar route, and the Railroad and the canal may have shared PawPaw Tunnel, which is also near Berkeley Springs.

Google the C&O Canal and Berkeley Springs--also Harpers Ferry--to find more information.

Probably a 'red petticoat' (which is actually a wool skirt dyed red, usually with 1.5" rings of black velvet around the bottom of it, about six inches and nine inches up). Ballyferriter is in Kerry, and a beautiful place.

Clay pipes were usually smoked during wakes - so very occasionally - rather than the way modern people smoke cigarettes.

Thanks everyone. I am not under the impression she came from Ballyferriter..only the Garveys...there are lots of Mannings, Kavanaughs, Fitzgeralds, ..can't remember other nmaes but not Lyons int he records I have seen, whcih are pretty good in some places. mg

Don't give up, we're just getting started.

Go to this link, do 'ctrl-f' and search for 'petticoat'. It says suggests Mayo & Galway were places where red was the rule.   Not exactly scholarly or exact but perhaps a clue.

That is her for sure. She sounds interesting. Sure wish I could find out her mother's name. And my grandmother Ella Devery Garvey's mother's maiden name...I should at least know who my great grandparents were. The Deverys seemed to have come from County Offaly..never heard of it to tell the truth and seemed to be involved in growing flax. There is quite a lot of info on my mother's side. mg

This might be her mom , from the 1880 census, showing Margerate as the wife of Cornelius, but somehow the age doesn't seem right...

Intersting ...and funny I never saw that before. I don't however think it is the right couple. Margaret seems pretty definitely born in 1830 or 1833 and she was married to Timothy Garvey..the ages just are not right..however, I wonder if it could be a brother....mg

The term "petticoat" is an old one. It was used for several garments -- among them women's skirts. They were often made in ,for example, clan colours of Scottish families. The colour would then be very significant.
