I would urge as many of you as possible, to watch the special service starting today at 10:00am(from Ottawa and Vimy).
To many, it was this battle that best defines Canada as a country!

That and the Halibut Treaty.

My grandfather fought in the battle and would never talk about it afterwards. Not to his wife, his daughters or his grandson. Bless em all.

The memorial at Vimy in northern France is an amazing place to visit. I know, we went there while searching for the grave of my (Canadian) great uncle, which is not far away.

As proud and grateful Canadians, we pause today to mark not only the ninety-third anniversary of this Nation's victory at Vimy Ridge but also to pay tribute to the passing of a truly remarkable generation who helped to end the most terrible conflict the world had ever known.

These gallant men and women went off to Europe to fight in what was often considered to be "the war to end all wars"; to defend the principles of peace, freedom and justice for their Country and, indeed, for all mankind. Theirs was a story of unspeakable horror, unmitigated heroism and – ultimately – of inspiring victory. This tremendous sacrifice can rightly be regarded as a defining moment in the history of Canada and is one which we will never forget.

And now, they are gone –and all Canadians mourn our collective loss. Yet they will remain forever etched in the hearts of a grateful people and on the pages of our history as symbols of service, honour and dedication.

In our minds and in our hearts always, we will remember them.

Although I probably would classify myself as peace loving, I also realize that many sacrifices made by others in years past allow me to do so! My grandfather, who died when I was six, was always my hero! He was a soldier of the Great War who, as a militia NCO, was called to duty in 1914. He did not fight at Vimy but soldiers trained by him captured Hill 145. After the capture of Vimy another 100 days of fighting followed. My grandfather who was still training troops in England took a demotion to follow "his boys" and fought through the following 100 days in France and Belgium. Hill 145 was the highest and most difficult part of the assault and credit goes to all of our Canadian troops who climbed its slopes, but the peak was taken by re-enforcements from the 85th battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders, mostly from Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore and Cape Breton Island. There today sits the Canadian Monument. My grandfather's story goes much farther but his link to Vimy Ridge was not forgotten by those who survived. He will never be forgotten by myself!

Sandy... they did what others could not, and turned the tide of the war. Sadly, so few know the story.
