Subject: Lyr Req: Sean Tyrrell From: Allan Dennehy Date: 07 Oct 02 - 03:40 PM Just got back from Ireland with Tyrrells old recording, The Orchard. There are two songs that I would really like to get the lyrics to: Bad luck to this marching and The lights of little Christmas. I'd really appreciate any help. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sean Tyrrell From: GUEST,Sean Wilson Date: 08 Oct 02 - 09:07 AM Do be carefull. I have Sean Tyrrells first album with the song "The Isle of Innisfree". The lyrics are incorrect and the melody format is also wrong. I have a copy of the original sheet music since 1952. It's a shame because he sings it with great feel. Incidentally I recently found a great website for this song and info on its composer for anyone interested. www.stoneandfarrelly.com |
Subject: Lyr Add: BAD LUCK TO THIS MARCHING (Lever, Tyrrell From: GUEST,Bill Kennedy Date: 08 Oct 02 - 09:35 AM BAD LUCK TO THIS MARCHING poem Charles Lever, music. Sean Tyrrell Bad luck to this marching, pipeclaying and starching, How neat you must be to be killed by the French. I'm sick of parading, through cold and wet wading, Or standing all night to be shot in a trench. To the tune of a fife they dispose of your life, They surrender your soul to some illigant lilt; Now I like "Garryowen" when I hear it at home, But it's not half so sweet when your about to be kilt. Though up late and early our pay comes so rarely, The devil a farthing we've ever to spare; They say some disaster befell the paymaster, On my soul I don't think that the money is there. And, oh, what a blunder, they won't let us plunder, While the convents invite us to rob them, 'tis clear; Though there isn't a village but cries, "Come and pillage!" Yet we leave all the mutton behind for Monsieur. Like a sailor that's nigh land, I long for that island Where even the kisses we steal if we please. Where it is no disgrace if you don't wash your face, And you've nothing to do but to stand at your ease. With no sergeant to abuse us, we fight to amuse us, Sure it's better beat Christians than kick a baboon, How I'd dance like a fairy to see old Dunleary And think twice ere I'd leave it to be a Dragoon. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE LIGHTS OF LITTLE CHRISTMAS From: GUEST,Bill Kennedy Date: 08 Oct 02 - 09:50 AM THE LIGHTS OF LITTLE CHRISTMAS Phil Gaston/Sean Tyrrell When the snow lies on the hillside like the ghost of being born And the wind makes praying fingers in the shadow of the thorn There's someone I often think of wishing, somehow she'd return Though I know she's in some city watching coloured neons burn In the still and silent midnight thoughts unbidden come to mind Shades of pictures in an album labeled, 'These were better times.' And that girl she smiles out sweetly, sitting pretty in the frame Blowing out her penny candles and I hear her call my name Chorus And the lights of Little Christmas shine so brightly in the west Saying please come home we miss you and we wish you all the best yes, we wish you all the best Now another winter marches 'cross the fields of frozen stone And another Little Christmas finds me quietly at home Til the telephone starts ringing and I go to take the call Someone asking, 'Do you know me? Do you know this voice at all?' Never in a lifetime could I be made to forget In a journey of a thousand miles I remember every step And, yes, I know those sweet lips that are so close to the phone Is she here or in America? Is she home or is she gone? Chorus And the lights of Little Christmas shine so brightly in the west Saying please come home we miss you and we wish you all the best yes, we wish you all the best She says I just got into Shannon and I think I'm home to stay Could you come and pick me up down here. There's a word you've got to say And I've barely put the phone down and the keys are in my hand And each little light that I pass by says right here's your promised land Yes, each little light that I pass by says right here's your promised land |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sean Tyrrell From: GUEST,Bill Kennedy Date: 08 Oct 02 - 10:01 AM Sean says in the notes about Bad Luck to This Marching: "This is another one of the gems of poems I found in that great treasure chest 1000 Years of Irish Poetry. (Still in print, edited by Kathleen Hoagland, Devin-Adair Co., Greenwich CT, USA) I was later to find out that this had been a song originally so by adding my own tune I have brought it back to its original form. It first saw the light of day in its present life with The Medal Hunters, a band including myself, Shane Holden and Michelle Bonamy. I hope Charles Lever who wrote the words in the middle 1800s would approve of my version." about Lights of Little Christmas he writes: "Phil Gaston was on his way from my house throught the Burren to his own house oin the other side of the Burren, when the inspiration for the lyrics of this positive little beaut came to him. I suppose crossing the High Commons on the 6th of January or as it's known in the west of Ireland "Little Xmas" and seeing the houses sparse though they are with myriads of candles in the windows strong feelings were evoked. It is a song of the Burren, of Emigration but for once returning, a love song, a song of hope." |
