Subject: RE: Help:Gaelic pronunciation From: Brían Date: 16 Oct 02 - 08:04 AM I don't know how this is pronounced, but I found a few tidbits on a Kerry tourism site: Rossbeigh is known for where Oisin and Niamh took to the sea on their white horse to live in the land of youth - Tir na nOg. Glenbeigh - Gleann Beithe - Valley of the Birches Brían |
Subject: RE: Help:Gaelic pronunciation From: GUEST Date: 16 Oct 02 - 01:02 PM should be Ross - Bay |
Subject: RE: Help:Gaelic pronunciation From: David Ingerson Date: 16 Oct 02 - 01:27 PM Should be . . . but the ultimate authority is how the locals say it, and that I don't know. Sorry. |
Subject: RE: Help:Gaelic pronunciation From: Brían Date: 16 Oct 02 - 06:49 PM I have friends who own property in Kerry. I'll see if the know. Brían |
Subject: RE: Help:Gaelic pronunciation From: diesel Date: 16 Oct 02 - 08:27 PM Ross Bay is the better of the pronunciations Don't be alarmed if you hear a Ross Beg ! Different areas will have diffeerent dialect and then there is the 'official' - which never seems to have either the local or wider sense.... rgds James |
Subject: RE: Help:Gaelic pronunciation From: curmudgeon Date: 18 Oct 02 - 08:33 AM Many thanks for the input, although I was hoping for something more definitive. A friend had posted this query to another list and I had hoped to have an answer when I see him later this evening. Still hoping -- Tom |
Subject: RE: Help:Gaelic pronunciation From: Haruo Date: 19 Oct 02 - 02:21 AM I've been trying to figure out the Gaelic Christmas hymn "Seall Thall Tighinn Bhon Ear" (le Iain MacLeòid) - how the words syllabicate, and how the syllables are apportioned amongst the notes and slurs of the tune, "An t-Eilean Dorcha" (le Iain MacLachliann). Not so much because I ever expect to be a decent Gaelicist (Goideloglot?) as because I would like to translate it into both Esperanto and Japanese. Is there a reliable online source for the most basic matters of Gaelic pronunciation and syllabication (I don't care if it's "official" or "school" or local dialect, as long as it helps me map the words to the tune)? This will probably also help with the Cape Breton Christmas song once I find the tune. Haruo |
