Subject: RE: Songs about ducks and geese From: pdq Date: 15 Nov 05 - 09:38 PM I was fortunate to see Burl Ives in his later years. Even though he was 72, he had a fine voice and was a great entertainer. He said he had not worked much in recent years and had to figure out a new song list. He realized that the first three songs in the play list he had just made were all about geese! Audience got a good laugh, one of many that night. The songs were "Go tell Aunt Rody", "Fox Went Out...", and one other. I believe he still did all three, just not leading off the show. |

Subject: RE: Songs about ducks and geese From: MissouriMud Date: 18 Nov 05 - 10:12 AM Not really "songs" perhaps but there are a fair number of old time fiddle dance tunes with ducks or geese in the titles that used to have some words associated with them. Best known may be "Ducks on the Mill Pond" and the "Old Gray Goose". Fiddlers Companion suggests words to the Ducks on the Mill Pond were: "Ducks in the millpond, Geese in the ocean; Hug them pretty girls, If I take a notion. *** Cho: Lord, Lord, gonna get on a rinktum, Lord, Lord, gonna get on a rinktum. *** Ducks in the millpond, Geese in the clover, Jumped in the bed, And the bed turned over. *** Ducks in the millpond, Geese in the clover, Fell in the millpond, Wet all over. (Lomax) *** Rain come and wet me, sun come and dry me, Step back pretty girl, don't you come nigh me. (Tommy Jarrell)" All of which sound like pretty standard dance tune floaters. Same source also has words for one version of Old Gray Goose being: "Johnny Gordon lost his cow, And where do you reckon he found her? He found her up that rocky branch, With a hundred buzzards around her. *** Cho.: Look here, look there, Look away over yander; Don't you see that old grey goose, A-smiling at that gander. *** Johnny Gordon lost his wife, And where do you reckon he found her? He found her up that rocky branch, With a hundred men around her." However I can't really make those words (particularly the chorus) fit with the Old Gray Goose fiddle tune I know so it may be a different version. The verses and chorus don't really seem to match that well so again maybe these are floating verses |

Subject: RE: Songs about ducks and geese From: Artful Codger Date: 16 Jun 10 - 07:23 PM Can I be the first in five years to mention "Ever So Goosey"? ;-} "The Marla Hill Ducks" "Nancy Hogan's Goose" "The Goose Hangs High" "Летят утки" (Letyat utki = Russian: The ducks are flying) features both ducks and geese. Both ducks and geese are also in the announcer's test, "One Hen, Two Ducks." "His Taxes", about a goose-herd who wants to give the king "the biggest bird" or, failing that, give the queen "a goose," and thus got gaoled for trying to pay his taxes. "There Was an Old Soldier": Oh I had a little duck and he had a web foot, And he built his nest in a mulberry bush... "Hares on the Mountain" Young women they swim like ducks on the water... "Tomorrow the Fox Will Come to Town": He'll steal the duck out of the brook... Ducks are among the menagerie at "Jollity Farm," and they feature in "Broomsquire's Bird Song," and they have "A Place in the Choir." "Who's the Fool Now?": I saw the goose ring the hog... "Put a Bit of Powder on It, Father": Now Father, in a raffle, Won such a lovely duck... In frog songs, the duck may play the predator rather than the prey (for a change!) such as in "Frog in the Well" and "Tidy Ann." Banjo Patterson's "Fur and Feathers," in Animals Noah Forgot, has a whistler duck as referee. And, of course, there's "Peter and the Wolf". |

Subject: RE: Songs about ducks and geese From: Tattie Bogle Date: 18 Jun 10 - 06:16 PM Here's a link to a recording of the late Jim Reid's song from the Violet Jacob poem "Norland Wind": http://www.springthyme.co.uk/wildgeese/index.htm And I don't think anyone has mentioned this other connotation of "Wild Geese", which appears in numerous Irish songs including The Foggy Dew. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_of_the_Wild_Geese and (see 4th verse): THE FOGGY DEW As down the glen one Easter morn to a city fair rode I There Armed lines of marching men in squadrons passed me by No pipe did hum, no battle drum did sound its loud tattoo But the Angelus Bell o'er the Liffey's swell rang out through the foggy dew Right proudly high over Dublin Town they hung out the flag of war 'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sud-El-Bar And from the plains of Royal Meath strong men came hurrying through While Britannia's Huns, with their long range guns sailed in through the foggy dew Oh the night fell black, and the rifles' crack made perfidious Albion reel In the leaden rain, seven tongues of flame did shine o'er the lines of steel By each shining blade a prayer was said, that to Ireland her sons be true But when morning broke, still the war flag shook out its folds in the foggy dew 'Twas England bade our wild geese go, that "small nations might be free"; Their lonely graves are by Suvla's waves or the fringe of the great North Sea. Oh, had they died by Pearse's side or fought with Cathal Brugha* Their graves we'd keep where the Fenians sleep, 'neath the shroud of the foggy dew. Oh the bravest fell, and the Requiem bell rang mournfully and clear For those who died that Eastertide in the spring time of the year And the world did gaze, in deep amaze, at those fearless men, but few, Who bore the fight that freedom's light might shine through the foggy dew As back through the glen I rode again and my heart with grief was sore For I parted then with valiant men whom I never shall see more But to and fro in my dreams I go and I kneel and pray for you, For slavery fled, O glorious dead, when you fell in the foggy dew. |
Subject: RE: Songs about ducks and geese From: Tootler Date: 19 Jun 10 - 08:39 AM Dame get up and bake your pies, bake your pies, bake your pies. Dame get up and bake your pies On Christmas day in the morning Dame what makes your maidens lie, maidens lie, maidens lie? Dame what makes your maidens lie On Christmas day in the morning? Dame what makes your ducks to die, ducks to die, ducks to die? Dame what makes your ducks to die On Christmas day in the morning? Their wings are cut, they cannot fly, cannot fly, cannot fly. Their wings are cut, they cannot fly On Christmas day in the morning. This version comes from the Northumbrian Minstrelsy. I am sure I have heard/seen a version where it is geese rather than ducks so you can take your pick. The tune is the same as "I saw three ships come sailing in". |
Subject: RE: Songs about ducks and geese From: Young Buchan Date: 19 Jun 10 - 09:28 AM I was doing no-one no harm When to Grogan's Store I set my course, And there I saw Ned Flanagan's gander Was treading Nancy Hogan's goose. Oh and Nancy herself was there, And she had the Devil's tongue. She swore by all the courts above That she would have that gander hung. "Oh, you cannot hang my gander. It's the goose that is to blame. For she comes round here every morning And wiggles her arse just to show she's game." But the policeman he came around And took the gander off to jail; Held him there till the next assizes; Would not give him any bail. When the trial it came around He looked the judge right in the face. He said, "Is it just for doing my duty That I must now leave my native place?" And then the judge he looked at the gander. He said, "Young man, I'll set you loose. But if you go back to Grogan's Store Stay away from Nancy Hogan's goose." He has gone back to Grogan's Store; He's filled himself full of oats and grass; And he's jumped Nancy Hogan's goose Crying, "All you judges can kiss my arse!" |

Subject: RE: Songs about ducks and geese From: Ged Fox Date: 17 Jun 19 - 01:52 PM "Mrs Bond" as printed in "The Puffin Song Book", compiled by Leslie Woodgate, circa 1956. 'Oh, what have you got for dinner Mrs Bond?' 'There's beef in the larder and ducks in the pond. Dilly dilly, dilly dilly, come and be killed, For you must be stuff'd and my customers filled.' 'John Ostler, go, fetch me a duckling or two; John Ostler, go, fetch me a duckling or two; Cry dilly dilly, dilly dilly, come and be killed, For you must be stuff'd and my customers filled.' 'I have been to the ducks that are swimming in the pond, And they won't come in to be killed, Mrs Bond; I cried dilly dilly, dilly dilly, come and be killed, For you must be stuff'd and the customers filled.' Mrs Bond she went down to the pond in a rage, With plenty of onions and plenty of sage; She cried, 'Come, little wag-tails, come, and be killed, For you shall be stuff'd, and my customers filled.' |
Subject: RE: Songs about ducks and geese From: Jos Date: 17 Jun 19 - 02:28 PM Thanks for that Ged - but it sounds as if there should be at least one more verse, perhaps relating how the ducks carried on happily swimming on the pond, 'and with beef from the larder the customers were filled'. |

Subject: RE: Songs about ducks and geese From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Mar 25 - 08:29 PM I'm reminded of this old Ian Tyson song: 1967 As recorded on SO MUCH FOR DREAMING Key F (5/C) Wild Geese Flying By F------------------Am Wild geese flying by; ----------------Bb ------------------F Calling on the downwind as they go; C--F--------------Am No answers they bring, ------Bb-----------------------------------C And springtime has too many miles to flow; Am---------F Lone black pines, Am----------------------Gm Hillsides all covered in snow, F---------------Am Why does the wind ----------Bb-----------------------F Say you ain’t coming back any more? Was there a time, When my dreams were not always of you? The days ain’t so bad, But each night takes so long passing through; Down by the stream, Fresh otter tracks in the snow; Why does the wind Say you ain’t coming back any more? I’ve got a mind, Just to ramble this whole country ‘round, With the leaves turning green, And the frost boiling out of the ground; Drive through the miles, A country I’ve never seen before; Now that the wind Says you ain’t coming back any more.
