Johhnie's Scots patter was great fun, but keep an eye out for his album "Sit Down Mr. Music Man" on Boot records. It's out of print but turns up all the time in used record stores. Two other Mudcatters, Rick Fielding and Glen Reid were also on Boot Records. It was THE Canadian label for a while, and featured Liona Boyd the classical guitarist as well.

Happy trails Johnnie.

First time I ever met Wee John was in 1968 in Rick Fieldings living room when he lived on Admiral Rd. in Toronto.He was singing a song I heard for the very first time "Ramblin' Boy" by Tom Paxton.
The last verse of the song seems almost prophetic in hindsight.

"He left us here to ramble on.
My wanderin' pal is dead and gone.
If when we die we go somewhere.
I'll bet you a dollar, he's ramblin' there"

Go in peace, old friend,
Love Glen

This was penned earlier this year... it seems appropriate.

We gather here together, friends both old and new,
To share our songs and laughter, tell a stirring tale or two.
But time is rolling onwards, and the toll it takes is dear;
And every year there's one less voice, who will it be next year?

When first we met in company, when none the other knew,
We shared our songs and laughter, and friendships bloomed and grew.
In harmony and unison, our voices blended clear;
But every year there's one less voice, who will it be next year?

The songs we sang were old ones, songs of peace and war,
Of sailing ships and lovers' arms, the miners' life and more.
But all of them in common, were pleasing to the ear;
But every year there's one less voice, who will it be next year?

So raise your voices up boys, in memory of those now gone.
Give thanks for those who gather to carry on the song,
And keep it ringing out now, keep singing through the tears,
So every year there's one more voice, who will it be next year?

Tune: The Rose of York (My name it is McBrennan)
Sat 24 Aug 2002, for Fliss, Rod, Dave, Wally, Tony and all the others.
They aren't here but they know who they are.

Tweed, thanks. First time I've heard him.

Seamus, I don't know that he thought he was leaving when he posted that poem. I don't have any idea if he got so sick all of a sudden or had been fighting it for a long time and just didn't want to deal with how folks would treat him. It seemed to me he was saying, in that message and that thread, just a little bit more than his opinion on "what happens when you die." He posted the poem without comment and when others discussed and argued, he let the poem stand on it's own.

The poem isn't primarily about what happens after death. It's the words of a dying man reassuring and comforting those left behind. So maybe he knew and maybe he hoped we'd find it again after he was gone. Maybe he didn't, but it's still a fine 'goodbye'.

Little John once composed a reworking of Hamlet's soliloquy in his own unique Scots dialect, and it was a treat to read. I wish I could find it and post it here. I thank him for the many amusing moments he gave to me and many others, and the many insights he provided. As far as I'm concerned, he will always be with us.

See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
The breath from your own lips, the touch of fingertips
A sweet and tender kiss
The sound of a midnight train, wearing someone's ring
Someone calling your name
Somebody so warm cradled in your arm
Didn't you think you were worth anything
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world...

I had known of him through his music and his time with the Sons of Erin, but it was a particular treat to sit in the lunch room and listen to his stories. I haven't seen him in nearly 20 years, but remember him fondly. Go in peace.
