We were going back to Ireland ourselves this year but my wife doesn't cotton to driving on the wee roads there so we are going to England and France instead. I've always wanted to visit the D-Day beaches in Normandy, and we plan to visit the wee French village where my grandmother's family lived prior to immigrating to the U.S. Sorry for the thread drift. Got carried away. :>) I know you will enjoy your trip to Ireland. If it weren't so far from Dublin I'd encourage you to visit Galway and the wee town, Clifdon, where my wife and I had a wedding blessing ceremony nine years ago. DougR |

The AA reckons you can get from Dublin to Dingle in four hours. I'd suggest it'll take you six and maybe more both ways (with refreshment and photo breaks). The roads from Dublin to Dingle and back via Athenry pass through some of the blandest countryside in Ireland until you get past Tralee on the first leg. If you want to see some really great countryside and seascapes, head up from Dublin to Belfast and then Larne (not great views on the way, admittedly), then take the Antrim coast road, the finest coast road in all Ireland. Aim for Cushendall on your first night and Johnny Joe's pub - a great place for music. Then carry on along the coast to The Giant's Causeway and the Bushmills Distillery. Take in Derry's city walls and then hit the splendours of Donegal. In Donegal you've two options: 1) follow the coast up from Letterkenny to Creeslough and then west via Dunfanagh, Falcarragh and Gortahork; or 2) cut inland via the Glenveagh National Park and Mount Errigal. Whichever way you choose you'll end up in Gweedore where Hudai Beag's pub in Bunbeg has a great Monday night session or there's Leo's Tavern in Meenaleck, home of the Clannad family - fine food and sessions at the weekend. Head south from there and you'll end up in Donegal town, worth a stop before taking the road back to Dublin via Enniskillen and the Fermanagh Lakelands. The route I've suggested can be easily done in three days and, once you've left Larne, take you to some of Ireland's finest sights. The one you're planning will see you sitting staring at motorway junctions and cud-chewing cattle. |

Stayed overnight in Swords (good session at a pub there) and then drove on to Listowel the next day. We were stopping in Listowel for a while but we did an easy day trip to Dingle via Tralee from there. It's easier than you may think provided you allow enough time. Irish hospitality is no myth, they are a warm and very friendly people and the country is mainly beautiful and unspoilt. I first went in the seventies at the hight of the 'troubles' and we were pretty nervous about being English in Ireland. Well, we had nothing to worry about at all, Most of the Irish were very sorry for US! becuase we had to live in a country run by Thatcher and the tory party!! Have a great time, you will come back with some wonderful memories. |

Today I finally had the chance to do so - here are the pictures, first some impressions of the track from Ballyard via the Basin to Blennerville: I guess there is some renovation and resoration work going on which is why I said it MAY be operational. What you have to realize is that at least a few years ago there were very few local buses in Dingle. You could possibly hire the B&B guy for a private tour..I would recommend that strongly. He is very genial and knowledgeable and centrally located. Speaking of which, O'Flaherty's pub (located next to Garvey's supermarket) is right next door to their B&B. I personally heard good music there, but it was not life-transforming. Too many flutes. Other music I heard in Dingle was of the pleasant pub variety but nothing spectacular.
