Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh, I was born... (Lunatic's Lullaby)
From: GUEST,Stephanie
Date: 20 Jul 06 - 10:06 PM

My dad, who would be 88 now, taught it to me when I was very young. I see some variations, but I learned it well and still can recite the lyrics he taught me. He spoke it (in syncopation), but put on this ending which he sung; "On the road to Mandalay; Where the flying fishes play; and the dawn comes up like thunder; from China 'cross the bay."

I know of no one else who had even heard of it. I'm shocked that it was considered a camp song. Oh, and it's "When the whistles rang boom boom." It's a song about craziness, where whistles ring boom-boom, not toot-toot (they way they really do.)

Note: He also taught me Mini the Moocher (about a prostitute) and St. James Infirary, a '20s jazz number, also sung by Cab Calloway, (about a woman dying of STDs in New Orleans.) It's a great song.

Stephanie, would you be so kind as to type in the complete lyrics as your dad taught them to you? Also some basic info about where he was from, and when and where (if you know) he learned it?

Ditto for the other songs he taught you.

thanks,
Haruo

I heard this song for the first time today from a 5 yr old at my story hour. She sang the whole thing except the Minnesota verse. I've been involved in Girl Scouts in NY for the last 7 years and never heard it. I was amazed to find it and all it's variations. Great fun! Thanks!

Oh, I was born one night one morn When the whistle went "boom boom."
You can *fry a cake or bake a steak When the mud pies are in bloom.
Does six and six make nine? Does ice grow on a vine?
Is *Old man Joe an Eskimo In Good Old Summertime?

Oh, you loop-de-loop in your noodle soup *and to give your socks a shine. (shh shh)
I'm guilty, judge. I *stole the fudge. Three cheers for all man kind!
I cannot tell a lie. I *honked an apple pie.
*on a tree beneath the sea *Under the clear blue sky.

Oh if Easter eggs don't *shave their legs, Their children will have ducks. (Quack, quack!)
I'd rather buy a lemon pie For forty-seven bucks.
Way down in Barcelonia They jumped into the foamia
But that is all balonia. Paderewski blow your horn. (Toot, toot!)

OK - after reading all this - here's the version that I learned in Canada back in the 60's from my parents...seems so politically incorrect now - but I loved it when I was a kid..

I'm up here in my nuthouse. My mind is in a rut
My keeper thinks I'm crazy but I'm sure she's off her nut
I'm just as sane as you are and I can prove it too
'cause when I sing this lullaby you'll know I'm not coocoo

I was born one night one morning when the whistle went boom boom
I can bake a snake and drink a cake when mudpies are in bloom
and six and six is nine and rice comes from a mine
and Old Black Joe's an Eskimo in the days of Porcupine

We know that camels sail the seas and we get honey from the fleas
and all the horses climb the trees on the road to the Mandalay.

My husband sings this song in the car on road trips. I married someone whose whole family hails from Ohio. I'm a born and raised Texan, and had never ever heard this song before. It must be a Northern/Midwest creation! But obviously, he must have learned it wrong, because this is how he sings it:

Oh I was born One night, one morn When the whistle went toot-toot!
You can fry a cake and bake a snake When the mudpies are in bloom.
Does six and six make nine? Does ice grow on a vine?
There's old Black Joe, the Eskimo In the good ol' summertime!

A loop-de-loop in your noodle soup And your children will have ducks (Quack Quack)
I'd rather have a lemon pie Than forty-seven bucks!
Way down in Barcelonia I stepped into effonia (?)
And this is all bolognia. Paderoowsky blow your horn! (toot toot, toot-n-toot-n-toot TOOT TOOT!)

From: beardedbruce
Date: 30 Nov 06 - 02:43 PM

Another set of lyrics, for the collectors out there...

The Lunatic's Lullaby
Music & Lyrics by: Leslie Moore, Johnny Tucker & Edgar Leslie
From the 1926 sheet music:

I'm up here in the bug house. My brain is in a rut
My keeper says I'm crazy, But he is off his nut
I'm just as sane as you are, And I can prove it too
For when you hear my lullaby You'll know I'm not cuckoo

Chorus: Oh! I was born at night one morn And the whistles rang Boom! Boom!
I boil a cake and drink a steak When the mud pies are in bloom
If six and six are nine, Does ice come from a mine?
Then old Black Joe's an Eskimo And pork's from porcupine

A pig or cow can bark meow But a goldfish likes to sing
I saw a frog swim up a log But he fell and broke his wing
I know that camels sail the sea, That we get honey from a flea
That every horse can climb a tree On the Road to Mandalay
(repeat Chorus)

Oh, me! Oh, my!
That's the lunatic's lullaby!

Other remembered versions:

Oh, you loop-de-loop in your noodle soup Just to give your socks a shine.
I'm guilty judge. I ate the fudge. Three cheers for Old Lang Syne!
I cannot tell a lie. I hocked an apple pie.
It's on a tree beneath the sea Above the bright, blue sky.

Oh, if Easter eggs don't wash their legs, Their children will have ducks. (Quack, quack!)
I'd rather buy a lemon pie For forty-seven bucks.
Way down in Barcelonia, They jumped into the foamia
But that is all balonia. Paderewski blow your horn. (Toot, toot!)

Oh they call me old Napoleon But I'm not him at all
I'm just a North Dakotian Come up from old Saint Paul
I'll sue them all for slander. I'll make them all repent
For how can I be Bonaparte When I'm the president?

I'm a Canadian and I learned this song from my mom - she sang it to me as a child. Now I sing it to my own son, and I thought I'd try to look up the lyrics - I had no idea so many people knew it!
Well mine are the same in the beginning but the last half is different:

Ohhhh, I live up in a Nuthouse. My mind is in a rut
My keeper thinks I'm crazy But I'm sure she's off her nut
I'm just the same as you are And I can prove it too
For when I sing this lullaby You'll know I'm not Coo Coo

I was born one night one morning when the whistle went boom boom
I can bake a steak and drink a cake When mudpies are in bloom
Six and six are nine And rice comes from a mine
And Old Black Joe was an Eskimo On his way to Caroline

We get honey from the trees
And all the horses climb the bees
And all the horses climb the bees on the way to Mandalay
Hay heh!

I have been singing this song my entire life. Learned it in Camp in West Virginia in the late 60's. I'm from MD. My daughter and i now do this as a hand clap and we've been stuck on the last verse for a year! I've asked everyone I know that has gone to camp, and noone has heard of this great song. Thanks so much!

My Grandfather and Mother used to sing this song when I was little...I used to call it the silly song. They are both gone now and I have regretted not having them write down the lyrics...no one ever knew what I was talking about when I asked them for lyrics I was starting to think they made it up ..glad to see others remember so I can teach this song to my daughter and son one day.
Here is our version:

I'm up here in the bug house. I'm in an awful rut
My keeper says I'm crazy, But he is off his nut.
I'm just as sane as you are, And I can prove it too
Just listen to my lullaby You'll know I'm not cuckoo

Oh! I was born one night one morn When the whistles rang Boom! Boom!
I can fry a cake and bake a steak(or snake) When the mud pies are in bloom
If six and six are nine Does ice come from a mine?
Old Black Joe was an Eskimo And pork's from porcupine

Oh a pig or cow can bark meow But a goldfish likes to sing
I saw a frog swim up a log But he fell and broke his wing
If France is in Japan. Does milk come from a fan?
Paul Revere was fond of beer and so is your old man!

Oh they call me old Napoleon But I'm not him at all
I'm just a North Dakotian Come up from old Saint Paul
I know that camels sail the sea, That we get honey from a flea
That every horse can climb a tree On the Road to Mandalay

Thanks for helping me remember!

Man I learned this song the year I went to Girl Scout Camp at Camp Hardee in eastern North Carolina. That woulda hve been about 1983. It was one of my only memories (except geting homesick).

Here is all I could remember as far as words go.

Oh- loop-de-loop in noodle soup!
Just give your socks a shine.

I can not tell a lie.
I hocked and apple pie.
It's on a tree beneath the sea
Above the bright blue sky.

Thanks for the memories!

I am a Brownie leader now and I am going to combine the song so that it fills in the rest of my memory and teach it to my girls when we go camping in MAY, OH YEAH!

Can you imagine having that little bit in your head for over 20 years.

My favorite kids' song. My sister learned it I believe at Camp Tall Trees, a Jewish summer camp near Otter Creek Park (Fort Knox Area), Kentucky in the early 60s and I learned it from her. I may have switched the order of verses or changed some words but here's how I remember it.

I'm up here in the nuthouse. My mind is in a rut
My keeper thinks I'm crazy But he's just off his nut.
I'm just as sane as you are And I can prove it too
So listen to my lullaby To prove I'm not coo-coo.

Oh I was born one night one morn When the whistles went boom boom
I can bake a steak or fry a cake When the mudpies are in bloom
I cannot tell a lie. I stole a pizza pie
It's in a tree beneath the sea Above the bright blue sky.

Oh loop de loop and noodle soup, Just give myself a shine
I'm guilty, judge. I stole the fudge. Three cheers for Auld Lang Syne
And six and six is nine, And ice comes from a mine
Old Black Joe the Eskimo In the good old summertime.

Oh Easter eggs and wash your legs And children can't have ducks
I'd rather have a lemon pie Than 47 bucks
Way down in Soscalonia They spit onto the flonia
But that is all balonia. Paderewski blown your horn toot toot!

My mother sang this to me in the early 70's. That's the only place I had ever heard it before, I thought she had made it up!

LUNATIC'S LULLABY

Oh, I was born one night one morn' When the whistle went "boom, boom."
I can bake a steak or fry a cake When the mudpies are in bloom.
When six and six makes nine And ice comes from a mine,
When ol' Black Joe's an Eskimo "In the Good Old Summer Time."

Oh, loop-the-loop In the noodley soup Just to give my self a shine
I'm a guilty judge, I stole the fudge Three cheers for Auld Lang Sine
I cannot tell a lie. I hocked a case of rye
Beneath the sea Beneath a tree Above the clear green sky

Oh, if Easter eggs don't wash their legs Their children will be ducks
I'd rather have a lemon pie Than forty-seven bucks
Away a-down Solona Away across the sea
Oh, I was born one night one morn, Paderewski, blow your horn "Toot, toot!"

I've been trying to remember the rest of the lyrics to this song for years now! I learned it in girl scout camp only about 14 years ago, so it's been around a while. Of course, they taught it as "old BIG Joe" because "Old Black Joe" would have probably not been pc.

Dana, I know the lyrics you're talking about, but I learned this as a completely different song. We called it the Billboard song. This is what I remember of it:

As I was walking down the street
One dark and dreary day
I came upon a billboard
And much to my dismay
The sign was torn and tattered
From the storm the night before
The wind and rain had done its job
And this is what I saw:
Smoke Coca-Cola chewing gum,
Chew Wrigley's Spearmint Beer,
Kennel Ration dog food
Keeps your complexion clear,
Simonise your baby
With a Hershey's candy bar,
And Pepsi-Cola beauty cream
Is used by all the stars!
So, take your next vacation
In a brand-new Frigidaire,
Learn to play the piano
In your winter underwear,
Doctors say that babies
Should smoke until they're 3 (or 4!),
And people over 65
Should bathe in Lipton tea! (Hey!)

The lyrics are almost identical to what has been posted with a couple of exceptions.

Oh, I was born one night one morn When the whistle went "Boom, Boom."
I can bake a steak or fry a cake When the mud pies are in bloom.
Does six and six make nine? Does ice come from a mine?
Was Old Black Joe an Eskimo In the Good old summertime?

Oh, I can loop-the-loop in the noodle soup Just to give my socks a shine.
I'm the guilty judge who stole the fudge. Three cheers for Old Lang Syne!
I cannot tell a lie. I hocked a case of Rye.
'Twas in a tree beneath the sea Above the bright blue sky.

Oh if Easter eggs don't wash their legs, Their children will be ducks.
I'd rather have a lemon pie Than forty-seven bucks.
Way down in Ashbaloney They spit right down your phonio
But that's a lot of balonyio, Paderewski, blow your horn. (Toot, toot!)

I've sung this all of my life and that's a long time ...

I learned this song at girl scout camp in the late 70s/early 80s, but with minor variations from what I found here, but I had a really different ending.... It's great to read all the other versions out there!

I'm up here in my nuthouse. My mind is in a rut.
My keeper thinks I'm crazy, But I know he's a nut.
I'm just as sane as you are, And I can prove it too.
For when you hear my lullaby You won't think I'm coocoo.

Oh, I was born one night one morn When the whistles went boom-boom
You can bake a cake or fry a snake When the mudpies are in bloom.
Does six plus six make nine? Does ice grow on a vine?
Here's old man Joe, the Eskimo In the good old summertime!

Oh loopty-loop in my noodle soup Just to give my socks a shine.
I'm a guilty fudge, I ate the judge. Three cheers for Olde Lang Syne!
I cannot tell a lie. I hucked an apple pie
It's in a tree, beneath the sea In the big old great blue sky!

Oh I called from California On my old telephonia
Cause this is all balonia. let the whistles go boom-boom!

Camp Marydale (Girl Scout Camp) - Bains, Lousiana, early 1970's...we LOVED this song.

Some LA variations:
You could buy a cake or fry a snake...

Was Old Man Joe an Eskimo...

My 3-year-old is begging me to sing the whole song and now I can - thanks, ya'll!

And if anyone has compiled all the lyrics into one long song, please share...

So funny! I learned this growing up from my best friend who learned it from her dad. We would sing it as fast as we could. I remember singing it while riding horses. It has been stuck in my head for 20 years now. I've sung it to my kids. I'm going to girls camp for our church and decided just to google this to see if this was really a song, and can't believe I'm not the only one going around singing this :) I love the verses I didn't know. Here's what I've been singing:

I'm up here in this nuthouse. My mind is in a rut.
My keeper thinks I'm crazy But he's just off his nut!
I'm just as sane as you are, And I can prove it too.
Just listen to this lullaby To prove I'm not coo coo!

I was born one night one morn When the whistle went boom boom!
I can bake a steak or fry a cake When the mudpies are in bloom.
Does 6 and 6 make 9? Does ice come from a mine?
And Old Black Joe's an Eskimo In the good ole summertime!

Oh your noot and your froot (??? Don't ask, will switch to loop...) And your noodle soup And give your socks a shine.
The guilty judge who stole the fudge, 3 cheers for Auld Lang Syne!
Way out in Barcelonia They spit into the phonia
But that is all balonia. Patterewski blow your horn! Toot, toot!!!

Thanks for the laugh, I'll be tweeking my version now! Love this song!

brings back great memories. Joe Green (sadly no longer with us) and I used to skip through the halls of the Kings County Hospital "G" Building singing this song.

It helped us pass many a night and burn off the stresses of medical school.

My daughter (30 yrs old) just asked me to send her the lyrics to what we always called "I was born". She was singing it to her 4 month old and couldn't remember all of the words. I never knew the very last ve rse and thought that now is the time to try and find the last few lines. - Well - I googled "is old black joe an eskimo" and couldn't believe all the information I got. I have been singing this song since the early 60's, don't even remember where I first heard it - camp maybe - Until now I've never been able to find anyone who ever heard of it - they all just thought I dreamt it up - of course I knew I didn't. So now I can pass it along to my granddaughter with the last verse included thanks to all of you!!

Hi! I am a CIT from Camp Scherman in CA. Some of us CITs learned this song as the "Jeep" Song. The way we sing it is:

Oh I was born One night, one morn When the whistles went boom boom
You can fry a cake Or bake a steak When mud pies are in bloom
if 6 and 6 make 9 and ice grows on a vine
Then Old man Joe's an Eskimo In the good old summertime

Oh, you can loop-de-loop In your noodle soup Just to give your socks a shine
I'm guilty Judge; I stole the fudge. Three cheers for Auld Lang Syne
I cannot tell a lie. I hooked an apple pie
it's on a tree Beneath the sea Above the clear blue sky!

Oh, they call me King Napoleon But I'm not him at all
I come from South Dakota Way down in old Saint Paul
I'll sue them all for slander. I'll make them all repent
For how can I be Blown apart When I'm the President

Oh, if Easter eggs Don't shave their legs, Their children will be ducks. (Quack, quack!)
I'd rather buy A lemon pie For forty-seven bucks.
Way down in Barcelonio I fell into the phonio
Oh, this is all baloneyo. Paderewski blow your horn. (Toot, toot!)

Just thought I would let ya'll know!

I'm up here in the nut house. My head is in a rut
My keeper thinks I'm crazy But he's just another nut.
Oh, I'm the same as you are And I can prove it too
For when you hear my lullaby You'll see I'm not coo-coo.

Oh - I was born one night, one morn When the whistles went boom-boom
They baked a steak and fried and cake When the mud pies where in bloom.
If six and six are nine Then ice comes from a mine
And Old Black Joe's an Eskimo In the good ol' summertime.

So - loopty-loop in the noodle soup Just to give your socks a shine.
You're guilty, judge; you stole the fudge. Three cheers for Auld Lang Syne!

If Easter eggs don't wash their legs Their children will have ducks
I'd rather have a lemon pie Than forty-seven bucks!
Way down in Barcelona They play the grand saphona
But that's a lot of bologne. Patereski blow your horn. Toot-toot.

I find it so amazing how many suble changes in the song we have all heard.

Mine was taught to me as a small child by my Mother. She died several years back (it was very sudden. She went into the hospital one week and was gone the next. It was almost at her death when the doctors concluded it was pancreatic cancer-the disease that Patrick Swayze (of "Dirty Dancing") has and is still surviving it.)

Anyway, on the way back from a trip to the grocery store about a half hour ago, I started singing that song...and I was worried that I might have forgotten. We all want to cling to certain happy memories.

Anyway, my grandmother told me my Mom had made it up. I ask Mom later and she told me it was just an old song and she had nothing to do with writing it.

Anyway, here is the version she taught me:

Oh, I was born one night one morn, when the whistle went "toot! toot!"
You could buy and egg or fry a steak when the mudpies are in bloom
Does six and six make nine? Does ice grow on a vine?
Is Old Black Joe an Eskimo in the good old summertime?

Oh, a loopty loop in your noodle soup just to give your socks a shine
I'm the guilty judge, I ate the fudge, three cheers for Auld Lang Syne
I cannot tell a lie, I hogged an apple pie
It's on a tree, beneath the sea, above the bright blue sky

Oh, if easter eggs don't wash their legs, their children will have ducks (Quack, Quack)
I'd rather buy a apple pie for forty-seven bucks
Way down in Barcelonio, I jumped into the foamio,
but that was all bolongio. Pattawhiskie blow your horn (toot! toot!)

I'm up here in the nuthouse. my mind is in a rut
my keeper thinks I'm crazy but he's just off his nut
I'm just as sane as you are and I can prove it too
so listen to my lullaby to prove I'm not coo-coo

I can bake a steak I can fry a cake when the mudpies are in bloom
does six and eight make nine? does icecream grow on vines
is GI Joe an eskimoe in the good ole summer time

ohh I looped a loop in my noodle soup just to give myself some shine
I'm a guilty judge I stole the fudge. three cheers for Auld Lang Syne
I cannot tell a lie. I hawked a case of rye
beneath the sea beneath the tree beneath the bright blue skyyyy

oh they call me king Napolean but I'm not him at all
I come from South Dakota way down by ole St Paul
I'll sue them all for slander. I'll make them all repent
for how can be Bonepart when I'm the president!!!???

IFFf Easter Eggs don't wash their legs their children will be ducks!
where can I buy a lemon pie for forty-seven bucks?!

(and this next verse ends the song with us singing -- or yelling actually- it as fast as we possibly could)

way down in barcalonia they play the saxaphonia
well, that's a bunch of bologonia. paterewski blow your horn toot-toot!!

This is in answer to a request buried in the responses to "Lunatic's Lullaby: Quite unrelated.

"The Elements" was written by Tom Lehrer in the early 1950's. The tune is the Nightmare Song from Gilbert & Sullivan's "Iolanthe". It was recorded by Lehrer, and is in a book "Too Many Songs by Tom Lehrer", copyright 1981.

So, my *grandmother* used to sing me this when I was a kid. She learned at Camp Che-Na-Wa in the Adirondacks sometime in the late 1940s. I've promises to sit down with her and transcribe her version of the song (which includes the intro, chorus, and noodle soup verse, but not much else) when I visit her next week.

My mom just got back from Puerto Rico and said that my little nephew was singing some strange song his dad (my brother) taught him. I heard it and remembered it from YMCA day camp in Troy, Michigan, over 30 years ago! After reading several of these posts, it's interesting that most people heard it while living in Michigan somewhere.

How interesting to see all the different versions and verses.

I was pretty young during the gas shortage in SoCal during the 1970s and while waiting in line to buy gas my mother taught me this song. My version is slightly different than the others listed here.

I'm up here in my nuthouse. My mind is in a rut.
My keeper thinks I'm crazy. But he's just off his nut.
I'm just as sane as you are. And I can prove it too.
So listen to my lullaby I'm here to sing for you.

One night one morn when chicks are born and whistles went boom boom.
You can bake a snake or fry a cake when mudpies are in bloom.
Do six and six make nine? Does ice come from a mine?
Is Old Black Joe an Eskimo in the good old summertime?

If Easter eggs could wash their legs and children could have ducks.
I'd rather buy a lemon pie for 47 bucks.
Way down in Barcelonia They spit into the phonia.
But that is just bolognia. Padelooski blow your horn - toot toot ding-a-ling!

I was born one night in the early morn when the whistles rang boom boom
I boiled a steak and I drank a cake When the mudpies were in bloom.
If six and six is nine and ice comes from a mine
Then old Black Joe is an Eskimo and pork is pork-i-pine.

If a dog and a cow can bark meow and a goldfish likes to sing
I saw a frog climb up a log and he fell and broke his wing.

Subject: Lyr Add: LUNATIC'S LULLABY (from Harry Reser)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 04 Dec 09 - 02:38 PM

At last I know what the song sounds like! Thanks to the previous GUEST who found THE LUNATIC'S LULLABY recorded in 1926 by Harry Reser and His Orchestra (under the pseudonym Seven Wild Men), at The Internet Archive. Actually, the "song" is rhythmically recited rather than sung, in time with the music. (Is there a name for this kind of performance?)

Here's my transcription:

Listen, we're not crazy!
[music starts]
Now, I was born at night one morn and the whistles rang boom-boom.
I boil a cake and drink a steak when the mud-pies are in bloom.
If six and six are nine, does ice come from a mine?
Then Old Black Joe's an Eskimo and pork's from porcupine.

A pig or cow can bark meow but a goldfish likes to sing.
I saw a frog swim up a log but he fell and he broke his wing.
I know that camels sail the sea, that we get honey from a flea,
That every horse can climb a tree on the road to Mandalay.

Now I shoot the chutes in paper boots when the clouds are shining bright.
I'll fly a boat and row a goat, but I won't canoe a kite.
If France is in Japan, what does milk come from, a fan?
Then Paul Revere was fond of beer and so is your old man.

Now I don't shoot pool with Kelly Buhl(?) when his foot is in his sock.
A flapper's knees are bound to freeze if her fur coat is in hock.
I know an ostrich has no chest, that Grandma never wore a vest,
That elephants fly to their nests. Oh, my country, 'tis of thou.
[music stops]
Good morning, Napoleon!

Well, I haven't seen my Dad's version yet!

The way I learned it from him, there was a chorus:

    Lift up the latch
    Into the booby hatch
La la la la la la la la la...la!
    Where can you match
    Life in the booby hatch?
La la la la la la la la la....la!

And then the verse:

They call me King Napoleon but I'm not him at all.
I come from Minnesota, a way down in St. Paul.
I'll sue them all for slander, right down to their last cent,
For how can I be Napoleon when I'm the President?

(Chorus)

...Lots of close approximations to the verse, but none to the chorus.

Don't remember any other verses.

And the Tom Lehrer song about the periodic table/elements is indeed taken from Gilbert & Sullivan, but it's "I am the very model of a modern major general," not the nightmare song.
