Subject: NYC - Saturday, October 20th From: Liam's Brother Date: 16 Oct 01 - 09:21 PM There will be a benefit concert of Maritime and Irish Folk Songs on Staten Island in New York City on Saturday, October 20th. All proceeds go to the New York City Firemen's Widows and Childrens Fund, and to the Staten Island Firefighters' Memorial. Performing will be many singers from South Street Seaport Museum in Manhattan (Jan Christensen, Dan Milner & Bob Conroy, Stout) and Irish Fever. Admission is $10. The concert will be held at St. Paul's RC Church, 145 Clinton Avenue, Staten Island, NY. The church hall is 2 blocks from historic Sailors' Snug Harbor (where Bill Doerflinger collected "The Leaving of Liverpool" from Dick Maitland).

Subject: RE: NYC - Saturday, October 20th From: InOBU Date: 17 Oct 01 - 07:22 AM And if it sells out... Joel Landy, Mary Courtney, Larry Otway and more are holding a concert for the Widows and Children of Engine 33 Ladder 9, hit very hard, a quarter of the fire company killed, on the same night in Manhattan. This will be at 9pm at 22 Below Cabaret, at 155 East 22nd Street between 3rd and Lex. I will be performing my song, made famous by Mary Courtney, about the loss of so many from this fire company as well as the two new Quaker songs. One of the firemen of that station who was in the WTC will speak of his lost friends. Best wishes and Good Luck Dan. Is mise, le meas Larry |

Subject: RE: NYC - Saturday, October 20th From: Liam's Brother Date: 21 Oct 01 - 01:38 AM Thanks for asking. I was very pleased to find that the audience (and the sponsoring parish) was a very mixed group. The church hall was a "multi-use" space. There were basketball hoops at either end, votive candles to the side and a stage also. I think they had 400 seats set out; about 360 were taken but I believe the concert was over-subscribed by well wishers. Musically, we had a lot of fun. The groups supported each other and we finished the evening with The Leaving of Liverpool (quite fitting because Bill Doerflinger had collected it just 2 blocks away) and This Land is Your Land. There was a request (by acclimation, really) for God Bless America at the end. I think the concert raised about $4,000. Lou Killen is at the apartment for a house concert tomorrow. Many of the same singers will be here. No rest for the wicked!

Subject: RE: NYC - Saturday, October 20th From: InOBU Date: 22 Oct 01 - 07:44 AM The Engine 33 fundraiser went well also, Mary Courtney was to be there, and to everyones surprise and joy, she showed up with Morning Star, her band, they performed Christmas in the Trenches, and we all wept. I was accompanyed by the very tallented Mary Shannon, who was grabbed into this while still jet lagged from her return from Belfast, Joel Landy and Heather Lev where wonderful, I am blanking on the names of the others, all of whom were wonderful. Anna, of Ladder 9, one of FDNYC's few women fire Fighters was in the Audience. I had met her a few days before when I was evacuated from my place when the building next door caught fire! Let's not let this be the last of the concerts for the FDNY. I was playing at the funeral of a fire fighter Saturday morning in Bay Side. The two issue the fire fighters stressed is that there are fire houses in some nieghborhoods, like Ocean Hill Brownsville, where they feel isolated. Lets start getting a school program together to play in schools in those places, with visits by fire fighters, to instruct the kids what their fire fighters do, and change that dynamic. Also they were concerned that others will not have the fundraisers, so I told them about our plans for an April fundraiser in London, DC and NY for the forigners killed in the trade center. So let's get it together to work together to move forward from this in the spirit of concern and honnor for those who died and did so much. Well done Dan, Cheers Larry |
