Liz, there's a cheapo cassette on sale at many motorway service areas. It's from the Comedy Club and it's "live at Cambridge University - SPIKE MILLIGAN". Jeremy Taylor guests on it and I'm fairly sure he does "All Along the South Coast". I know I have it somewhere. If you're stuck then PM me and I'll transcribe it.

All along the south coast the sea is sort of there.
The sun is sort of shining through a sort of salt-sea air.
There's a sort of "shall we" or "shan't we", a sort of "yes" or "no",
A sort of rolling up of trouser legs and a dipping of the toe.

All along the south coast the day is sort of bright.
At least it's sort of brighter than it sort of is at night,
A sort of "should we" or "could we", a sort of "yes" or "no".
It could be sort of fun. We ought to sort of have a go.

All along the south coast they're turning out the lights.
It's sort of past 11 o'clock; we've sort of seen the sights.
There's a sort of "shall we", "dare we", a sort of groping of the thighs,
A sort of gasp of sort of pleasure, a sort of burst of sort of sighs.

All along the south coast the waves beat on the shore.
They sound, well, sort of different now than they sort of did before.
There's a sort of "did we" or "didn't we", a sort of smoothing down of clothes,
A sort of "better take you home now, do you think it sort of shows?"

All along the south coast we sort of settle down.
It's just as sort of good as any other sort of town.
Only now we're sort of older, we sort of stop at home.
We paint the walls and mow the lawn and leave the world alone.

All along the south coast the sea is sort of there.
The sun is sort of shining through a sort of salt-sea air.
And all along the south coast can still be sort of seen,
A corner of sort of England that's forever sort of green.

I heard 'all olong the south coast' recited at a folk club in Surbiton in about 1969 and have been looking for ot ever since. Its very funny and reminds me of the mentallity of some of us south london suburb people who seem to only half-do things.

All Along The South Coast is on Jeremy's CD, the very best of. If you want the track and the cd, mail Jeremy and he'll organise it. An enjoyable listen if you like Jeemy Taylor.

Also I think its a send up of the English south coast weather thats neither one thing or the other and maybe makes the people like that too. In fact my memory of the first verse is (but it was a long time ago that I heard it):

'All along the south coast the sun was sort of shining and then it sort of wasn't,
And then it sort of rained and then it sort of didn't.
...............................'

Very happy memory of seeing / hearing Jeremy perform this at the London folk festival after it moved to City University in the 1970s!

In my case, however, the song makes me sigh for being about as inaccurate as you can get. I spent a good deal of time on the Southern coast, and met and recorded traditional singers and enjoyed all it has to offer. "O, you may moan with plaintive tone your gormless modern tune, etc.etc.
