Subject: BS: Anyone have access to mass-spectrometer? From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 21 Jun 14 - 04:46 PM Second attempt at starting this thread. Someone on the Fylde(UK) is asking if anyone has access to a mass-spectrometer as he has some samples that he would like to have analysed. I said that I would ask here as you never know with the strange and complicated contacts that the users of our forum have. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone have access to mass-spectrometer? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 22 Jun 14 - 01:26 PM Services start at about $40 for inorganic analyses, small molecules, but for complex organics (protein biomarkers, etc.), or for components in complex mixtures, $250/sample is closer to the mark. Spectra of the interval desired are necessary. You do not give sufficient information! What type of material, spectrum range comparison desired, preliminary screening needed, etc. For more information, try Advanced Analytical Testing Service, Ontario, CA., or other services; Proteomics Core, Univ. Rochester NY; Kinectus Bioinformatics, Vancouver, Canada; Advanced Analytical Testing, Ontario, CA. Small spectrophotometers start at about $15,000, but those for complex materials can be very expensive. Then adequate software and spectra comparisons also can be very costly. Add the preliminary screening lab, and the bill is way above the home/hobby range, except for the very rich. Add the education needed for the evaluator....... |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone have access to mass-spectrometer? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 22 Jun 14 - 07:32 PM Further note. Prices quoted are for batches of analyses; a single analysis could be very expensive, considering the time required of a trained analyst, cost of equipment and overhead, etc. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone have access to mass-spectrometer? From: Rapparee Date: 22 Jun 14 - 08:59 PM Yes, if it's worthwhile to spectroscope the mass. Also have access to linear accelerators (same deal). True, this. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone have access to mass-spectrometer? From: GUEST,Mad Jock Date: 25 Jun 14 - 01:45 PM Have you tried contacting a few Universities who have a good reputation in the sciences? |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone have access to mass-spectrometer? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 25 Jun 14 - 01:59 PM Several universities offer spectrographic analyses when their spectrometers are not involved in research, but for a price. Money is needed for research not covered by grants. Moreover, they will not do random samples of unknown provenance or for questionable purpose, nor will any other reputable lab, commercial or academic. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone have access to mass-spectrometer? From: GUEST,pete from seven stars link Date: 25 Jun 14 - 03:41 PM Q for Q......Why do they need to know where a sample comes from, and how might a purpose be questionable ?. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone have access to mass-spectrometer? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 25 Jun 14 - 05:12 PM ... how might a purpose be questionable? Perhaps there might be an objection if it was a request to check the quality of some crack cocaine. DC |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone have access to mass-spectrometer? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 25 Jun 14 - 07:06 PM Doug, exactly. Not a particularly good example since the mass spec is not needed for that, but it has been used to help identify area of origin. Moreover, no university wishes to be involved in any effort that might reflect on their standards or impartiality without due consideration. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anyone have access to mass-spectrometer? From: Donuel Date: 27 Jun 14 - 12:40 PM Spare parts only. Such novel parts for a mass spectometer were suitable for a small sculpture. I would like access to a titanium 3D computer printer. They print up to 10 square feet. |
