Subject: Don't you hear Jerusalem moan From: Charcloth Date: 09 Dec 01 - 09:26 PM Do any of you fine folks have the lyrics to "Don't you hear Jerusalem Moan" that were recorded by "New Grass Revival" & the Dirt Band on the second "Will the circle be unbroken" recording. The ones in the data base aren't what I am looking for & I had no luck with "Joes Lyrics" Click for version in the Digital Tradition |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Don't you hear Jerusalem moan From: Rolfyboy6 Date: 09 Dec 01 - 09:50 PM I haven't found the lyrics on the web. It was recorded in 1936 by the Heavenly Gospel Singers in 1936. Now on Document 5452, HGS Complete Works vol. 1. It is on The Nashville Bluegrass Band's "Idle Time" album where it is copyright listed as: "Trad." NBB did a lot of black gospel when Mississippian Mike Compton was in the band. Their quartet style then was superb. |
Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T YOU HEAR JERUSALEM MOAN From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Dec 01 - 12:47 AM Well, this isn't it, either - but I thought I'd post it because it IS an additional version. Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T YOU HEAR JERUSALEM MOAN From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Dec 01 - 01:21 AM OK, so here's what I got. The recording is hard to understand, but I did the best I could. Corrections/suggestions/alternate interpretations welcomed. Gee, the version in the database is a doozy. I suppose it's a parody of an earlier gospel song, and the verses here and above are closer to the original. Any background information or additional versions? Apparently, an early recording was by the Skillet Lickers. -Joe Offer- DON'T YOU HEAR JERUSALEM MOAN Well I got a home on the other shore Don't you hear Jerusalem moan I know I'll live there forever more Don't you hear Jerusalem moan Chorus (after each verse): Don't you hear Jerusalem moan Don't you hear Jerusalem moan Thank God there's a heaven and a ringin' in my soul and my soul's set free Don't you hear Jerusalem moan It's a hard road to walk and a mighty long way, Don't you hear Jerusalem moan But your feet are gettin flyin when your soul is saved Don't you hear Jerusalem moan Well, a Baptist preacher knows his Bible Don't you hear Jerusalem moan He's on a first-name basis with the saints inside. Don't you hear Jerusalem moan (as recorded by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on "Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Volume 2)^^ |

Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T YOU HEAR JERUSALEM MOAN From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Dec 01 - 01:38 AM Here's another version, from www.wynonna.com, who apparently claims to have written the song with ther help of her mother (and a lot of makeup). No comment, although I guess I have to admit I do like their singing when they sing together. -Joe Offer- Don't You Hear Jerusalem Moan Words and Music by Naomi Judd, Wynonna Judd and Brent Maher Well, brother, better get right with God Don't you hear Jerusalem moan? Subject: Lyr Add: DON'T YOU HEAR JERUSALEM MOURN From: Ship'scat Date: 10 Dec 01 - 04:02 AM This version comes from Jonathan Eberhart's "Life's Trolley Ride" on Folk Legacy's C-82. Jonathan attributed it to a 78 recorded in 1928 by Bill Chitwood and his Georgia Mountaineers and found by his long time collaborator Andy Wallace and. Note that this version uses MOURN instead of MOAN. The recording features a mandolin trio by Mike Holmes, Jay Unger and Andy. The last verse is Johnathan's own. DON'T YOU HEAR JERUSALEM MOURN Now the Methodist preacher, you can tell him where he goes. Don't you hear Jerusalem mourn? Don't never let a chicken get old enough to crow. Don't you hear Jerusalem mourn? Chorus Don't you hear Jerusalem mourn? Don't you hear Jerusalem mourn? Thank god that the heavens am a-ringin' in my soul, and my soul's set free Don't you hear Jerusalem mourn? Now the Baptist preacher, you can tell him by his coat. Got a bottle in the pocket that he couldn't hardly tote. Now the Campellite preacher, so they say, Well he got to be baptized every other day. Presbyterian preacher don't never take the blues. He chews his own tobacco and he drinks his own booze. Now the hardshell preacher, well, he kneels uptown. His neck's so stiff can't hardly look around Now the Holy Roller preacher, well, he sure am a sight Let me tell you how he get 'em all a-rollin' and he kick out the light. Unitarian preacher, don't never bend you ear. But I bet he'd like a tune like this one hear. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Don't you hear Jerusalem moan From: Stewie Date: 10 Dec 01 - 04:28 AM My favourite version - Jody Stecher's ['Going Up on the Mountain'] - is more or less along the lines of that posted by Ship'scat except he uses 'moan', a couple of the preachers are switched around, the Carmelite preacher 'his soul is saved' and the Unitarian is lost, perhaps because the recording ends prematurely as a result of a stuff-up. Great stuff! --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Don't you hear Jerusalem moan From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Dec 01 - 04:44 AM For the record, Campbellite is the old name for members of what is now usually known as the Church of Christ. If I recall correctly, this group does not allow the use of musical instruments in worship, so they sing a cappella. My ex-wife dragged me to a function put on by the Church of Christ, and it's there that I learned "There Is Power in the Blood." For that, I'm very grateful to her. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Don't you hear Jerusalem moan From: GUEST,Dale Date: 10 Dec 01 - 05:01 PM Here's a VERY simplistic explanation of the Campbellite Churches, which they all prefer to call the Restoration Movement, by the way. There are three main church groups which all more or less owe their beginnings to Alexander Campbell. On one hand you have the Churches of Christ (the non instrumental group) and on the other is the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and then you have the Christian Churches AND Churches of Christ which are somewhere in between. The Disciples Churches are usually a bit more formal and have a denominational structure which is entirely missing in the other two. Each of their congregations is fully autonomous, and answers to no real central organization. As to whether the third group calls itself a Christian Church or a Church of Christ is entirely up to the congregation.
So, seeing a sign over the door which says Church of Christ can mean that it is a non instrumental congregation, or perhaps an independent Christian Church by another name. One way you might be able to tell is if that sign includes the message, The Church of Christ Meets Here. That is a clear indicator that it is a non instrumental church.
Seeing the sign Christian Church over the door can mean that it is a Disciples church, or it could be an independent Church of Christ by another name. Am I making myself clear?
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
Christian Churches & Churches of Christ
I think This site tries to make some sense of the whole thing.
Naturally, the Church of Christ and the Christian Churches & Churches of Christ sites are unofficial, given the nature of their church organization. There may be better sites, but those looked promising.
Then there is the Church of Christ, Scientist and The United Church of Church which are not really connected to the others at all, but I won't get into that.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Don't you hear Jerusalem moan From: Stewie Date: 10 Dec 01 - 07:24 PM Joe and Dale, thanks for the info on Campbellite. I was not aware of the term. The version that I am most familiar with is Jody Stecher's and he most definitely sings 'Carmelite'. However, he says he got it from a Seattle mandolinist, Jerry Mitchell, who in turn had it from the Skillet Lickers recording. Listening to the Skillet Lickers, Gid sings 'Campbellite' so either Jody or his mate are as ignorant as I. Indeed, it did strike me that a monk was a little out of place in that company. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Don't you hear Jerusalem moan From: Charcloth Date: 11 Dec 01 - 12:35 AM I thank you one & all for the lyrics. Regarding Campbellites, there is even a group called the "one cup group" where everyone in the congrgation drinks communion out of the same cup. There was several years back, two fractions in Ky. called "standers & sitters" one sect said when you partook of the Lord's supper you had to all be seated & the other faction said you had to all be standing. Be that as it may, But I must say the accapella group really knows how to sing four part harmony. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Don't You Hear Jerusalem Moan From: GUEST Date: 08 Mar 12 - 11:40 AM This song is also featured on a gospel record by The Morris Family called 'The Morris Family sing "Walk on Holy Ground"'. It was recorded in the sixties and credits 'Don't You Hear Jerusalem Moan' to an R. Morris. He had a radio show at the time and recorded at least two albums with his sisters (the other one I have is 'The Morris Family sings Chuckwagon Gang Songs'. My boyfriend is a great-nephew of the Morris Family and we just finished recording these albums into mp3 format. In trying to find out more about this particular song I was excited to see the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band had recorded a version. However, to learn that the Judds have taken creative (and monetary) credit for this song makes me a little sick... Thanks for the information regarding the original recordings from the 20s and 30s! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Don't You Hear Jerusalem Moan From: GUEST,Mike Yates Date: 08 Mar 12 - 01:49 PM I am surprised that nobody mentioned Cas Wallin's version, which has an additional final verse, about a catholic priest, which Cas told me had been composed by himself, and which referred to a local priest in Sodom Laurel. It's on "Far in the Mountains" Volumes 3 & 4 (Musical Traditions MTCD503-4. |

Subject: RE: Origins: Don't You Hear Jerusalem Moan From: GUEST,Jay Minton Date: 10 May 21 - 03:47 PM This song, like Get Along Cindy and many others long ago morphed into a "Zipper" song where the singer can create any verse his/her imagination can come up with. For the last 55 years I've been using lyrics whose origins are unknown to me, along with some I added for my own enjoyment. Oh, the Methodist minister got squeaky shoes He pulls down the shades and brings out the booze Oh, the Baptist preacher has a really hard sell You buy his package or you roast in hell Oh, the Campbellite preacher will show you the way But you gotta be baptized every other day Oh, the Catholic preacher keeps you out of trouble He'll save your soul, but your family will double Oh, the Rabbi preacher gives good advice He'll get you into heaven for a wholesale price Oh, the Unitarian preacher has a lot to learn They say he prays "To whom it may concern" Oh, the Lutheran preacher has a really nice home And he's careful to stay just one step from Rome Oh, the Episcopal preacher prays on bended knees He gets his prayers answered 'cause he always says "Please" Oh, the Presbyterian preacher is one of the "Elected" Everybody else just hopes they'll be selected |
