Subject: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Cats Date: 22 May 07 - 12:06 PM Whilst lounging feeling seriously yucky today, I thought I was having delusions when I saw an advertisement for planning for Christmas. I wasn't. I've seen it twice now. It's still closer to last Christmas than the next one. Anyone seen anything earlier or is this like hearing the first cuckoo or spotting the first summer tourist? |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Liz the Squeak Date: 22 May 07 - 12:17 PM Many Christmas clubs are getting started now. Saving a bit each week to spread the cost is a sensible idea but make sure it's with a reputable company and that you're covered for losses if it goes bust before pay-out date. Saw my first Skin Donor on Sunday - a motorcyclist/motor scooter rider wearing "summer silly kit" - shorts, T-shirt, trainers and a crash helmet... even falling off at 5 mph he's going to lose a lot of skin. It's when you see the first items for sale in the shops that the Christmas Madness truly begins. Usually the day after August Bank Holiday. LTS LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Liz the Squeak Date: 22 May 07 - 12:41 PM At least that's only 2 days after the official end of Christmas (Candlemass, 2nd Feb) so that's allowable. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: jacqui.c Date: 22 May 07 - 04:28 PM Liz - over here motorcyclists don't even have to wear skidlids. I suppose when they lose what brains they have they ain't gonna notice the skin going as well! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: MMario Date: 22 May 07 - 04:30 PM depends on the state, Jacqui. Massachusetts requires a helmet, so does New York. Some states require FULL FACE helmets, not just the half-domes allowed in other states. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: jacqui.c Date: 22 May 07 - 04:35 PM I think they would definitely need them in Mass., Mmario - from what I've seen of the driving down there! Seems crazy not to enforce it all over the States, given the possible economic cost of the possible injuries. Having workied in motor injury claims I would like to see it made mandatory that riders wear full leathers as well - those injuries can be horrific. |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Becca72 Date: 22 May 07 - 05:38 PM Vermont also requires a helmet, I believe... |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 22 May 07 - 07:08 PM my Sister-in-law is a nurse & used to work in emergency & gave us graphic descriptions of broken skulls & brains spilling out! We have had compulsary wearing of helmets for decades. I read somewhere that skin breaks as soon as it hits the ground, denim a metre or 2 after impact, & leathers last something like 100 metres, & always think of this when I see the summer idiots in tiny little shorts & singlets, with half or full helmets. Sometime in the 80's the motorcycle idiots got an easing of the law that required them to wear helmets. I can't remember what the exemption was, & I dunno if that was changed, but we still see occasional bare heads. Maybe some of these folks win Darwin awards!! sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Sorcha Date: 22 May 07 - 09:43 PM And, Wyo has no helmet law. All that clothing...denim, leather, whatever, also gets ground into the skin (what's left of it) along with dirt, gravel, asphalt bits, glass, whatever. I don't ride. |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: ranger1 Date: 22 May 07 - 09:49 PM Whoah! Talk about thread drift! ER nurses and doctors frequently refer to motorcyclists as "organ donors". Just a little trivia tidbit I got from one of my sisters, who is an ER nurse. |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Cats Date: 23 May 07 - 05:05 AM So... who else has seen Christmas advertising this early? |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 23 May 07 - 06:07 AM not me. sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: JennyO Date: 23 May 07 - 08:32 AM What a question to ask! I only just last weekend got round to putting away some of last year's Christmas lights from my front yard :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Liz the Squeak Date: 23 May 07 - 05:44 PM I'm still finding the odd Christmas bauble from where Raven batted them off the tree and around the floor... LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Becca72 Date: 23 May 07 - 06:34 PM I don't put up christmas decorations (three cats and not enough energy for it) but I did find one of mine playing with a Cheerio this morning. Trouble is, I cannot for the life of me remember the last time I bought Cheerios...they must have tucked it away in some unreachable corner for just such an occasion. |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: dick greenhaus Date: 24 May 07 - 03:02 PM I, as a former rider, vehemently oppose helmet laws. THEY'RE COUNTER-EVOLUTIONARY! |

Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: GUEST,observer Date: 25 May 07 - 07:36 AM don't worry - just watch this forum. The thread for the 2007 Secret Santa is not far off. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: Becca72 Date: 25 May 07 - 08:32 AM Did we ever get the word on who everyone's Santa was for last year? Did I miss is? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Christmas Advertising From: JennyO Date: 25 May 07 - 09:01 AM I was watching for it, and I don't think we did. Although I know who my Santa was, I was trying to guess at some of the others, so I would have been interested to see if I was right. |
