Subject: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: katlaughing Date: 22 Aug 99 - 08:04 PM Just heard a nice blurb on NPR, that John Lee Hooker, just turned 82 years young. I don't know a lot about him, but it sounds like he is pretty neat and still going strong. Nice voice and pioneer of the blues. Happy Birthday, Sir. katlaughing |

Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: Neil Lowe Date: 23 Aug 99 - 11:06 AM "....boogie, children." If that advice to his fans contributes to longevity I'd say it's worked well for him also....'course this from a man who also sang: "Whiskey and women....done 'bout wrecked my life...." If that's the case and he's lived 82 years, I'll think I'll go over to the Tavern and have a double shot of Beam on the rocks...and maybe talk a little trash with the members of the female persuasion. |
Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: Steve Latimer Date: 23 Aug 99 - 11:28 AM John Lee Hooker, man, that's the blues. I don't think it's been summed up much better than 'Madman Blues' Happy Birthday John Lee, keep going, there aren't many of the originals left.

Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: Jon W. Date: 23 Aug 99 - 11:31 AM My favorite John Lee Hooker song is this one:
Serves me right to suffer, baby, serves me right to be alone (2x) Happy birthday Mr Hooker. |
Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: Frank Hamilton Date: 23 Aug 99 - 11:48 AM I wouldn't take the prescription for booze, smoke, nighlife and loose women for longevity very seriously but I would submit that love of the kind of music Mr. Hooker does will keep anyone young and dancing. 82 years young! Two or three years older than Pete Seeger. (Wow!) Frank |
Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 23 Aug 99 - 12:29 PM John Lee Hooker is still singing and playing in California I hear. The man can play more blues on one string than I can get out with all six. What a great rhythmic and dynamic sense he has. Happy Birthday Mr. Hooker! Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: Rick Fielding Date: 24 Aug 99 - 01:32 AM Roger, by the time we're 82, we'll all be masters of one string blues. |
Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 24 Aug 99 - 05:40 AM Jon, that is my favorite of his too. I think it also has the words "My doctor wrote me a perscription for milk, cream and alcohol". If not that comes from my second favorite. "I'll never get out of these blues alive." Murray |
Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: Mike Billo Date: 24 Aug 99 - 10:03 AM I'm fortunate to live about one mile away from his night club, The "Boom Boom Room" here in San Francisco. Most nights he's there hangin' out, and greeting the customers. He plays there often, and still gives an incredible show. I'm in awe of him. He's an ascended Master filled with wisdom. |

Dear Mr. Hooker,I just got off the phone with my dad, Gardner Lorenzo Hudson, who at 82 years old, is still making music, like yourself. I am sure it is the music which helps to keep him so young! May we all be so fortunate. Happy Birthday! All the best, Katlaughing |
Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: SandyBob Date: 26 Aug 99 - 01:17 PM I remember a performance he gave in Portland years ago in front of an absolutely kicking band. He truly did coax more blues out of one string than his whole backup arsenal of musicians and their various instruments. Happy birthday Mr. Hooker. You got me to really listen to the blues. SandyBob |
Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: Mike Billo Date: 26 Aug 99 - 06:33 PM I printed this out, and brought it to the Boom Boom room. John Lee was not there, but I gave them to the bartender who says that birthday greetings have been coming in from all over the world, and he promises that John Lee will get everyone of them, and thanks the participants on the Mudcat forum on behalf of Mr. Hooker. Cool, huh? |

Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker 'boom-booms' to 82 yrs! From: Barry Finn Date: 27 Aug 99 - 12:42 AM I remember seeing him perform at a fly by night coffeehouse in Boston called 'Where It's At' back in the mid 60's. He was solo & so good & I can still recall how fluid his fingers were, like water gluiding over smooth rocks. I'd have to say that Boston is a pretty great folk city now but back then you wouldn't believe how blue it was. I'm amazed when I think of the great blues people that were constantly coming through town. Victoria Speevy(sp?), Otis Spann, Muddy Waters, Junior Wells & Buddy Guy, Big Mama Thornton (man did she have a hate for Elvis over Hounddog), a whole crew of Kings, Brownie & Sonny, John Hurt & all the young up & coming wannabes that got to become the next generation in a long line blues greats. Subject: John Lee Hooker From: moolson@aol.com Date: 07 Sep 99 - 07:26 PM I am hoping that someone can direct me in the right direction. Here is my story. I have a 20 month old baby boy whose is the world's biggest John Lee Hooker fan. He is fascinated with the song BOOM BOOM. He stops whatever he is doing when the song comes on and begins to groove. He sings BOOM BOOM and hooww, howww, howwww with a deep bluesy voice. I am hoping to find a picture with a signature (not authentic) to put in his scrapbook. If anyone knows about a fan club or any other info that could lead me in the right direction, I would greatly apprectiate the assistance. |
Subject: RE: John Lee Hooker From: katlaughing Date: 07 Sep 99 - 08:57 PM This will take you to his website for his blues/boogie bar/lounge in San Franciso, the BoomBoom Room. The opening page has a great graphic of him. This one will take you to a discussion thread we recently had for JLH's 82nd birthday, which you might find interesting. Hope this helps. Have you thought of making a videotape, too? Sounds like the kid is doing great. All the best, Katlaughing (also emailed this) |
