Among a myriad sources, the BBC yesterday:

US President George W Bush is likely to boost troop levels in Iraq next year, an administration official has said.

Up to 25,000 more troops could be deployed to try to help end the violence, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The comments come a day after prominent Republican John McCain called for up to 30,000 more troops to be sent to Iraq. Mr Bush had been due to announce a new strategy on Iraq next week, but has delayed his speech until January.

He is holding a flurry of meetings with top US and Iraqi officials and experts on how to change his policy.

The US administration source said the mission of the additional troops would be threefold, the BBC's Adam Brookes reports from Washington:

To help secure Baghdad amid daily car bombings and kidnappings

To make a renewed push to quell the insurgency in the Western province of Anbar

To tackle the militias behind much of the sectarian violence in the country, but especially the capital.

The remarks appear to be setting the tone for Mr Bush's announcement of his new Iraq strategy, our correspondent says.

He says the idea of boosting troop levels for one final push at halting the spiralling violence has been much discussed in Washington recently.

The comments came a day after Senator McCain called for more troops to stabilise Iraq.

"The situation is very, very serious," he said in Baghdad.

"It requires an injection of additional troops to control the situation and to allow the political process to proceed," he said. There are currently 140,000 US troops in Iraq.

Since a high-level review group published its findings last week, President Bush has been consulting with his military commanders and Iraqi political leaders to shape a new strategy.

On Wednesday, Mr Bush said he would not be rushed into making "a difficult decision".
"I've heard some ideas that would lead to defeat. And I reject those ideas, ideas such as leaving before the job is done; ideas such as not helping this government take the necessary and hard steps to be able to do its job."

Many Americans were "enablers" for six years. They bought his story and elected him (at least the second time around). It took a lot of people a long time to come around to a rational view of this "war on terror" and what a jerk BabyBush is. So maybe Bush figures that as slow thinking as those folks are, there is still some tolerance for his approach to war?

You may notice that interview between Pelosi and Russert was going on three years ago. But acknowledging that would not suit your agenda, would it.

Not only that but she said: "I think it would be better if we could get them to be not American that we could appeal to our European allies, NATO..."

MR. RUSSERT, following up: Would you send more American troops in order to stabilize the situation?

REP. PELOSI: Yes. And let me just say this, we must internationalize the situation. We cannot take no for an answer. We have to use our diplomacy to the fullest extent to get more international troops on the ground. And we have to truly internationalize and Iraqitize the situation."

Thanks Ebbie for noting that Guest's comment was 3 yrs prior & was only 15% complete. Many have changed 180 degrees within the past 3 yrs & figured out the last 85% of what was missing, though it seems some are still stuck there, just like our Lord & Master.

As far as reading the vote! We pretty much know he's on a lower reading level than most so I can't blame his his misreading the vote but I can blame him for not paying attention even if he's has an IEP & has a 501 plan & yes, even though he's been tested & found to be learning disabled he should've been able to follow the explained results. That's why he has advisors but I guess no one is helping him with his OD disorder (opposional defiance). Ohh, that explains alot.

Yeah, van lingle, I've been thinking of that song for some time too.

Now Britain says that a bunch of their troops are going to be withdrawn. The US should do the same -- follow the guidelines in the recent report.

And start talking to Iran -- if W hadn't mouthed off before the last Iranian election we might be dealing with someone a bit more moderate!

I understand that all the calls for more troops are coming from the Iraq Study Group and non-service personnel back in the USA.

So far I have not heard one field commander in Iraq say that they needed more troops. I know that they are considering increasing the numbers of advisors embedded with Iraqi Forces, but that does not necessarily mean an increase in US troop levels.

I think I'll wait until January when any change in strategy or direction will be explained.

The "send in more troops" plan is not being promoted by the Iraq Study Group. According to the Bush admin, the Iraq Study Group should be shot for treason.

It also isn't just a neocon plot. McCain isn't a neocon. He is a very popular Republican conservative, old school.

Which shouldn't cheer anyone up, because he will likely be the next president of the United States.

And Ebbie, et al--though I'm a different guest, I agree with the post of the guest who quoted Pelosi. Pelosi is the most militarist liberal on the block. Her brand of Democratic liberalism, now so popular among the Democratic party leadership, is a lot like Jesse Ventura's libertarian leaning Independence Party (or whatever he calls it these days). In other words, they are social issue liberals, but very militaristic and very pro-Pentagon.

Anyone who thinks Bush and the Democratic Congress are just going to up and leave Iraq must be drinking too much Jim Jones koolaid.

The Democratic party leadership has no intention of doing anything that might leave them vulnerable to the "cut and run" claims the Republicans will be levelling at them.

The Iraq Study Group plan is a benefit to the Democrats looking for a phased withdrawal. But it is a benefit that could well end up a knife between the ribs come 2008 presidential season.

Which begins in earnest in January.

I'm guessing the Democrats will end up voting to send more troops, and do it very quickly once the new Congress is sworn in.
