Subject: RE: Lyr Req: O Flower of Scotland From: GUEST,Lydia Duncan Date: 07 Mar 08 - 03:25 PM "O Flower Of Scotland" O Flower of Scotland, When will we see Your lika again, THat fought and died for And stood agianst him, Proud Edward's army ANd sent him homeward, Tae think again. THe hills are bare now, And autumn leaves lie thck and still, O'er land that is lost now, Which those so dearly held, That stood against him, Proud Edward's Army, And sent him homeward, Tae think again Those days are past now, And in the past they must remain, But we can still rise now, Amd be tje matopm again, That stood against him, Proud Edward's Army, and sent him homeward, Tae think again. (repeat 1st verse and chorus again!!!) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: O Flower of Scotland From: Jack Campin Date: 07 Mar 08 - 04:42 PM In a thread on uk.music.folk a while ago it occurred to me that these words are more appropriate (sample of Vogon poetry from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Added line breaks marked with /. Oh Freddled Gruntbuggly by Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz Oh freddled gruntbuggly Thy micturations are to me As plurdled gabbleblotchits / on a lurgid bee. Groop I implore thee, / my foonting turlingdromes And hooptiously drangle me / with crinkly bindlewurdles, Or I will rend thee / in the gobberwarts / with my blurglecruncheon, See if I don't! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: O Flower of Scotland From: GUEST,meself Date: 07 Mar 08 - 05:02 PM Ah, how often I've wished I could be tje matopm again - but those days are gone now, all gone ... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: O Flower of Scotland From: GUEST,JTT Date: 08 Mar 08 - 05:33 AM First I heard of that song was from a rather pudgy and very besuited-looking Scots businessman, at the time of the vote for Scotland to have its own limited government. To my surprise, he said, grinning joyously, that he was tired because he'd just driven across Ireland to the Stranraer ferry to cross to Scotland, then home to vote YES!!! and then driven straight back - whistling The Flower of Scotland all the way. Now there's someone who cares for his country. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: O Flower of Scotland From: GUEST,Bill the Collie Date: 08 Mar 08 - 07:54 AM I don't think "ilka" is correct. Rugby players sing "likes" But I think it ought to be "like" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: O Flower of Scotland From: Mr Happy Date: 08 Mar 08 - 07:58 AM I also 'don't think "ilka" is correct' In the above text, its 'lika!' |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: O Flower of Scotland From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 05 Oct 09 - 09:27 AM This is an exact copy of the previous post, even also missing out the line between "fought and died" and "and stood against" and the gibberish line after "we can stiil rise now" Why? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: O Flower of Scotland From: Dave Hanson Date: 06 Oct 09 - 02:55 AM For fucks sake, it's Oh Flower of Scotland, When will we see your like again, That fought and died for, YOUR WEE BIT HILL AND GLEN Dave H |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: O Flower of Scotland From: Jim McLean Date: 06 Oct 09 - 05:10 AM I remember sitting in a pub in London listening to a crowd of drunken Scots singing '.. and send him homewards..' |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: O Flower of Scotland From: BobKnight Date: 06 Oct 09 - 07:42 AM Thanks "Campervan" - all those lost lines and gibberish were beginning to get on my nerves. Please note all - just because thousands of football and rugby fans sing "likes" doesn't make it right. Roy Williamson wrote it as "like." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flower of Scotland (Roy Williamson) From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Sep 14 - 05:09 AM As the referendum comes near, I wonder if this song is being sung. There are all sorts of reasons why the referendum should pass and why it should fail. But it's interesting that all though history, the best Scottish songs have been the ones that oppose England. -Joe- Seems to me that the Digital Tradition version of this song is quite good. Does anyone see need for corrections? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flower of Scotland (Roy Williamson) From: GUEST,DTM Date: 06 Sep 14 - 08:57 AM Those days are passed now And in the past they must remain But we can still rise now And be the nation again That stood against him Proud Edward's army And sent him homeward Tae think again Apologies to the composer (the late Roy W) but, I've often heard line 3 sung as "But Scotland can rise now". I think it sings better and sounds stronger than "we can still". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flower of Scotland (Roy Williamson) From: GUEST Date: 06 Sep 14 - 09:08 AM "....But it's interesting that all though history, the best Scottish songs have been the ones that oppose England." - Joe - (posted above) -------------------------------------------------------------- "Both Sides of the Tweed" (Dick Gaughan) is my favourite "Scotland v England" song (if you want to label it as that). It celebrates the differences between our countries and promotes mutual respect. This should be(and very likely is) the sentiment of most of the followers of both the "Yes" & "No" campaigns. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flower of Scotland (Roy Williamson) From: Jack Campin Date: 06 Sep 14 - 09:15 AM I haven't heard much singing at all in the referendum campaign. It's all been way too low-key. Except that the NO campaigners seem very worried about getting egged by hostile crowds. If we'd had a bit more time to organize it, shaky eggs with YES logos could be a hit. (Jim, I really liked the job you did on George Galloway). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flower of Scotland (Roy Williamson) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 06 Sep 14 - 12:57 PM It's certainly still getting sung: my bugbear is the numerous people who sing "to be A nation again" when (as correctly posted above it is "THE nation" - a tiny difference in words but a huge difference in meaning. They even got it wrong in the Scottish Rugby Union international programmes one year: I complained and it was right next time! As for "Both Sides the Tweed" it came from a poem by James Hogg: in the original words it was "for the love of our KING'S sacred rights" and refers to the "Parcel of Rogues in a Nation" (as in the Robert Burns poem) - Scots who "sold out' to the English, resulting in the Act of Union of 1707. Jack, would you advocate shaking the eggs or throwing them?? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flower of Scotland (Roy Williamson) From: GUEST Date: 02 Nov 18 - 01:00 PM I know I'm about four years behind but I just stumbled across a mention of a poem written by James Hogg for his Jacobite Relics. But Hogg just did what Dick Gaughan later did to the Hogg version of Both Sides The Tweed. Actually I found an earlier version in John Yair's The Charmer Volume2 (1751) page262 which starts- What's the spring, breathing violet or rose. Yair only gives words -no tune but does specify that the tune to be used is Tweedside. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flower of Scotland (Roy Williamson) From: RunrigFan Date: 12 Feb 21 - 05:54 PM O Flower of Scotland when will we see the kind of hero Who fought to the death for his little blade of grass and heather Chorus: Who stood against Edward’s vain army And chased them home for a change of mind The hills are bare and Autumn’s leaves like a blanket on the earth The lost land which those warriors gave their love The tale is ended but forgotten she must never be And we can rise up and be a Nation again |
