While I find it flattering that the P-Vine would think of me so worldly as to know everything, Iz stumped on this one. Some womenz us a "foundation" in their facial makeup. Now if they go outside and want need to use a sun block does it go over the foundation or go on first??? My thinking is that it would go over the foundation as the foundation is, ahhh, the foundation but, heck, what do I know 'bout womenz makeup???

Fir that matter, what do I know about womanz??? (Rhetorical, no answers, please...)

having worked in up to 56 degree heat in the outback, I can say the answer is...

sunblock first, let it dry/sink in a little. Then foundation.

It doesn't matter in places like Woomera - the heat in the air is so hot, the sunblock evaporates and your skin just fries anyway, in the shade. The foundation doubles as a good sun blocker ( try it, it works!)

If more women used decent foundation garments this wouldn't happen. They'd be better off with a birqa. Wouldn't need sunblock.

But life wouldn't be quite so enjoyable.

Yeah, Freda's right. You can also get terrific facial moisturizers from folks like Olay, that have up to 30spf. You can apply foundation over that if you have to. It's just a bit pricey to use as an 'all over' sunscreen. You might try PMing katlaughing too...I know she's got a great link for a clothing company that makes sunscreen-clothes. Keeps you sun-free without the attractive birqa-babe look.

Never use the stuff--foundation, that is. Don't wear makeup at all, with the one exception of sometimes putting on mascara if I'm going someplace real dressed up. My eyelashes have faded over the years. I haven't seen the need for cosmetics, and the shock is less--you won't ever have the shock of catching me "without my makeup on." I do get a good haircut and I do have highlights in it, so it's not like I'm ignoring fashion or my looks completely.

Sunblock has some issues. PABA is an ingredient that has been argued about for a while. Here and here are a couple of commercial sites that talk about it.

I wear sunscreen and I wear a broad-brimmed hat when I'm out working in the yard. I still seem to get a sunburn where my shirt pulls up from the back of my pants when I bend over to weed the garden. It's like I have a nice happy smile on my lower back!

Yeah, SRS, I don't wear make-up either. I wholly believe that if you take care of your skin, you won't have anything you need to hide with foundation. However, I do know several people with cosmetic issues (like port-wine stains) that do feel the need to wear make-up daily. They say sunscreen first, make-up second, but if you are somewhere you will need to reapply sunscreen (swimming, gardening) you have to be prepared for the make-up and screen to make some pretty fantastic goo.

I did say the same about sunscreen, but changed my mind pretty thoroughly last year. Blistered shoulders hurt

Shlio, there's that, too! Cosmetics are expensive. It seemed silly to use something that would block my pores then have to use other products to unblock them again after the cosmetics come off.

I have a emergency supply of Neutragena sunscreen in the pickup, for if we forget the regular stuff. It's a handy spray bottle. I was at a drive-in drive-through window one day last summer and some high school kids were doing a car wash. One young woman was already getting quite pink--we were talking while I was waiting to order--I ended up pulling out the spray for her so she could get some protection for her neck and shoulders. It probably looked a little odd to other people waiting in the line as she turned and posed while I spritzed (she was already pink, she was going to be burned that evening anyway--but hopefully it stopped more damage from happening).

I have to confess to wearing makeup to work although I work part time. My under-makeup moisturiser has SPF20 so I go with that, if I use sunblock it's on the sticky-out bits of my anatomy like arms etc. As a product of mixed English/Irish/Scottish/Welsh ancestry with auburn hair and freckles, having lived in Oz all my life and being on the shady side of 40, I am now faced with the damage I did to my skin when I was young and silly. Today I made an appointment with the skin clinic for 10 days time (couldn't get in earlier) to check out the sunspots on my forehead, and my forearm, and the back of my hand and any others that are lurking.

Now I stay indoors where possible, and cover up when it isn't.

I didn't mean to appear a snob about make-up, though I've never liked the whole make-up industry and how people (women primarily) are manipulated into believing they HAVE to wear it to be "their best".

I wore make-up on stage and it always irritated my skin. Outside of theatre, I'd often wear eye make-up since I knew it brought out what I considered my best feature, and I prefer wearing my glasses to contacts, as they also irritated me.

Now I'm 52 and I only wear make-up if someone pays me to!

Back to the sun block issue, and a good one it is. There is a lot of controversy these days about what is in sun blocks and since I'm really sick of being a guinea pig for the food and drug industry, much less the make-up industry, I wear as little as humanly possible.

A decade spent in Greece and another spent in Hawaii taught me the best thing to do is to wear clothes that shade me from the sun...hats with brims, and light over-shirts to cover my arms. I don't wear shorts, but light trousers, pareos etc...and even at the beach, I always have an umbrella if I am not under a tree.(If you haven't guessed, I have very fair skin.)

I also encourage you to read carefully about whatever sun block you might want to wear, for those times when you can't, or don't want to avoid the sun. Go for Hypo-allergenic. Less chemicals to deal with. If you use something that's waterproof, be sure to clean it off later, since clogging your pours is to be avoided...and the same if you wear any kind of foundation. I believe there are some make-ups out there that are beginning to combine the two, and this seems ideal rather than slapping on two different things. (You might want to check Almay (sp?)..xx..e

Personally, I only wear make-up when 'on stage' as it were..... other times I rely on factor 100 sunblock - otherwise known as the pub!

There are sensible companies out there combining the two - there are some that act as blocks without realising it, but you have to do a trial and error to find which ones.   A wide brimmed hat is always sensible, as is the cotton shirt or light jacket to put over your arms and shoulders.

I once paraded at a festival with my face painted in stripes - all day in the sun and found that when washed off, I had 3 tanned stripes and the rest was its normal ruddy hue. Took ages to match the rest of the face up to the stripes by solicitous use of sunblock and the next sunny day (which wasn't until a week later!)

To avoid the happy smiling butt look, try longer shirts or a teddy that goes all the way round.

We went on hols to the Alps one summer for a bit of climbing.
A friend had borrowed his sisters sun cream as a last minute thought it was factor 1 or 2. We were wearing factor 40 glacier cream. After one day he fried.
He walked into the Pharmacy his face red and peeling in pain and simply pointed at his face. The assistant had no problems translating and gave him some cream to ease his pain.

Just like the Greek father in the Big Fat Greek Wedding, I have two remedies that between them cover all problems: Camomile and yoghurt.

In this case it's yoghurt. Natural, mind, none of the namby-pamby fruity stuff. When sunburnt, especially for serious cases, plaster it on and leave for as long as possible. It cools, soothes, moisturises, avoids blistering, reduces existing blisters, and helps heal. It is also great having it licked off, but that's a different subject.

It would work well for prevention also. First you put on the foundation, then the rest of the makeup, and last thing, just before you leave the house, take a tub of yoghurt and cover your face with the stuff. Ignore strange looks - you know you're doing the right thing...

Joking apart, yoghurt for burns is MAGIC. The only thing better than that is Fissan 75% sunburn cream, but that smells seriously fishy and does not wash off for 3 days minimum, plus all your towels and clothes that come into contact with it are rendered unusable forever after that. It saved my mother in law from having to be hospitalised, but destroyed her wardrobe and half my towels.

OK, we can get 50 Spf sun block. For children and those with super sensitive skin. Some of it claims to be waterproof. Many foundation make ups contain a sunblock. In the States, people do with tape on purpose what Liz did accidentally....temp. tattoo. No, I don't do make up either. Sun block at the lake, even in the shade because of the light reflected off the water.

Never tried yogurt, but raw potatoe juice is good for sunburn too. As is, of course, Aloe Vera juice.

A cut raw tomato rubbed on the burnt bits is also supposed to help ease the pain of sunburn.

I have been badly burnt a few times in my life....I belong to the generation who was sent out in the sun to play sans hat and of course there was no sunblock cream in those days. I can remember having nasty big blisters on my shoulders as a fried small fry. Once as a teenager I stayed out all day at the beach on the last day of my holiday (I lived in an inland town with a swimming pool but no sandy beach) and really cooked, I couldn't wear underwear as it hurt too much so had to wear my bikini instead because it fitted inside the white bits!

Ah.....the follies of youth. I still have a dense concentration of freckles on one thigh as a result of that episode.

I lived up north in Darwin as a little girl. yes, days soaking up the sun, no hat, playing under the house (houses on tall stilts up ther, because of the heat & floods) just a singlet and shorts and bare feet, lots of freckles... what happy memories.

zinc and castor cream is a good remedy!
