Subject: Garnet Rogers, Portland, Maine From: GUEST,Dave Date: 08 Dec 07 - 10:56 PM Warning to all Maine folkies. Mark this date:
SUNDAY---12/16/2007...at 8 P.M.
Garnet Rogers, Canada's master of guitar, fiddle, flute and baritone vocals will make a rare appearance at the One Longfellow Square venue in Portland, Maine see here. An extraordinary performer of rare and considerable talent in his writing and instrumental prowess, Garnet has gone from Stan's sideman to become a huge talent on his own terms. |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: maeve Date: 09 Dec 07 - 10:08 AM I haven't had the pleasure of a Garnet concert since I worked at The Folkway in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Do go to this if you can possibly manage. maeve |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Dec 07 - 10:26 AM The venue at Longfellow Square is also interesting. It was the headquarters for Portland Performing Arts for years before its founders left the state for greener pastures. If the current owners of the space continue to bring in performers of Garnet Rogers's quality, this could be an exciting year. Roll & Go will be performing earlier that day at Andy's Old Port Pub from 4 - 7 pm. We would love to see and hear as many of our friends there that day as possible. If we get a good response, we should be able to do this periodically throughout the winter. The Pub's address is 94 Commercial Street in the Old Port, next to Gilbert's Chowder House, and their phone number for more information is 874-2639. Come early to Portland and enjoy both shows. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: maeve Date: 09 Dec 07 - 03:35 PM From the Longfellow Square link posted above: "12/16/07 Garnet Rogers | 8pm $12 adv/$15 door Audience members are encouraged to bring non-perishable foods, and/or items of personal care to the concert as donations to project FEED." *********** Perfect! maeve |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: maeve Date: 09 Dec 07 - 03:58 PM Charley Noble- I can't think of a better afternoon/evening, Charley. I hope a slew of 'Catters and their friends follow your suggestion. So folks can plan, what might the charge be for the Roll and Go performance? The link I found doesn't include that information. Thanks, maeve |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: GUEST,Dave Date: 10 Dec 07 - 09:11 PM Charley, the new organizers seem determined to make a go of this venue. I should also have mentioned (just to encourage the crowd that shows up at Mary's) that they also have a bar (beer, wine and liquor!) in the foyer. |
|
Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: maeve Date: 11 Dec 07 - 10:03 AM Anyone know the charge for the Roll and Go performance? Prices for the Garnet concert are posted above. Guest, Dave- Thanks for posting this. For my part, as one of the "crowd that shows up at Mary's", the information that "they also have a bar (beer, wine and liquor!) in the foyer." isn't much of an encouragement, since I'd be driving back home after the show. I expect others will be pleased to hear of the option, however....Just please keep out of my route home, please! Warmly, maeve maeve |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 11 Dec 07 - 11:23 AM Maeve- Roll & Go's admission at Andy's Pub is priceless. All you need to do is sit down and order something to drink and/or eat. We haven't sampled the food but it would seem to be typical pub fare. All restaurants and pubs in Maine are non-smoking. We're a little worried about a late evening snow storm that is threatening the area Sunday, but it's still too soon to predict exactly what will happen. Saturday, Judy and I will be at the Press Room, with supplies of my newly released CD, OLD SAILOR-POETS, as well as my older ones; just the thing to stuff the stocking or turkey with. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: maeve Date: 11 Dec 07 - 12:03 PM It sounds like a really fine time starting with R&R's music, to a bite to eat, and ending with the evening Garnet show. Thanks, Charley. It's a very long shot for me. I hope the weather cooperates. maeve |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: GUEST,Dave Date: 11 Dec 07 - 09:39 PM Sorry, Maeve, I didn't mean to imply that ALL Mary's crowd are lushes - just that One Longfellow Square provides the opportunity for a libatation for those who enjoy that sort of thing in moderation. I, for one, happen to think that beer and folk music go admirably well together. Come to think of it, beer goes admirably well with almost any activity when you don't have to drive anywhere. (EXCEPTION: power tools - especially chain saws!). |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Jeri Date: 11 Dec 07 - 10:05 PM "I didn't mean to imply that ALL..." I don't mean to imply that ALL guys who call themselves 'Dave' are assholes. I won't be there. |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: GUEST,Dave Date: 11 Dec 07 - 11:35 PM Jeri, I'll admit that I'm an asshole. I enjoy being an asshole. I can take a joke. Can you? Maybe not. Hey! Lighten up! I was poking a little fun at the Sinsul guys. Don't let my attempt at humor stop you from missing a great show by a top-class performer. I'll even buy you a beer. |
|
Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: maeve Date: 12 Dec 07 - 05:54 AM Guest Dave- "The Sinsull guys", as you put it, have been dealing magnificently with some dangerous situations, injuries, and illnesses. Try some honey rather than vinegar and see how we respond. I suggest we return the focus to the wonderful musical opportunities detailed herein. Regards, maeve |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: SINSULL Date: 12 Dec 07 - 06:21 AM Have to admit, Dave, I was a little put off by your comment. I do serve beer and alcohol. I also watch carefully - there are always beds, taxis and rides for those who shouldn't be driving. It is done discreetly, but it is done. That said - if the weather cooperates, look for me. And yes - you can buy me a beer but only one. SINS |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Jeri Date: 12 Dec 07 - 08:00 AM That kind of joke is funny if people know each other, but not so much if you don't, just like the 'asshole' joke. I'd had a bad day, was (retrospectively) going migrainey and normally would have just thought what I typed out loud. It's hard to resist the offer of a free drink, but I'll have to see what the weather does and how much 'road' energy I've got. It's a fairly long drive and Garnet gets down here sometimes. Saw him in... I think it was September. Good show. Outside, wrapped up in blankets, lots of dew on instruments, and he had a mando-synthesizer thingie. Must stop communicating in sentence fragments and drink coffee. |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: maeve Date: 12 Dec 07 - 08:25 AM Any good desserts at that there foyer bar? You may certainly buy a dessert for me in place of that beer! BG maeve |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 13 Dec 07 - 09:17 AM Dave- This Garnet Rogers concert is certainly not looking good for anyone who has to drive in from out of town. The most recent weather reports have snow beginning Sunday morning and continuing all day and on through the evening. That's fine for anyone who lives in Portland but not for anyone else who is half sane. We also doubt that there will be a Roll & Go performance that day at Any's Old Port Pub. We'll be talking today with the management and suggest that they reschedule us December 30, the Sunday before New Year's. But, who knows, maybe the weather will all stay south. Where will Garnet be the day before? Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Jeri Date: 13 Dec 07 - 04:39 PM The Garnet Rogers concert at UMass, Boston for tonight was cancelled. Mind you, they said on WUMB that he told them he'd make it. |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: GUEST,Dave Date: 14 Dec 07 - 12:26 AM Well, Garnet is Canadian and is used to big snows and if he says he can make it to the gig, so can I. He only has a Volvo. His Dec 15 gig is in Pomfret, CT so to get to Portland, ME is 168 miles - an afternoon drive in a snowstorm to Garnet. I have a big-ass Chevvy 4x4 (gas-guzzler -sorry, but this is Maine in winter - I like to get there with a lot of Detroit steel around me!). I'm game. I only have a 30 mile drive. What about the rest of you Mainers? Some of you are only over the bridge. Some advice please. With snow on the ground, what streets are off-limits for parking around the venue? Charley? Are the ones that have parking meters good to use? |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Barry Finn Date: 14 Dec 07 - 02:18 AM Garnet must've really pissed off the powers that be, or at least the ones who control the weather. Barry |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Jeri Date: 14 Dec 07 - 08:20 AM They canceled the concert in Boston not because Garnet had any problem getting there, but because some people who shouldn't be out driving might get killed trying to make it. I'm one of those people who'll get on the road no matter what if I want to be somewhere badly enough. Garnet in Maine, at a venue where I'd be sorely distracted by fantasies of pouring a beer over someone's head, is not enough of a temptation. Not when Garnet plays 15 miles from my house in better weather. Dave, a hint: if you want people to come to your concert, try being nice. The shanty session thread with your big ol' 'fuck you, Maine and New Hampshire folkies' in the opening sentence ("Since Charley is obviously not above hijacking other posts to his own ends, I'll reciprocate. To those offended, I appologise (not)."), just doesn't work for me. If you have a show, with an audience and everything, have fun. If anyone from here goes, please let us know how it went. |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: SINSULL Date: 14 Dec 07 - 08:33 AM The snow is supposed to come in early and hard. Many events in Portland on Sunday have been cancelled in anticipation. I for one am getting in a large bottle of apple cider to heat up with cinnamon and enjoy while I watch the snow fall. MS |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: maeve Date: 14 Dec 07 - 09:06 AM I'd enjoy hearing and visiting with Garnet, and was looking forward to starting the evening with the Roll & Go music gathering at Andy's Old Port Pub. I'm being responsible, avoiding a 2+ hour drive, and will stay home. Hot spiced cider sounds lovely, Sinsull. I hope those who are able to go will have a great time and will all reach home safely. maeve |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Dec 07 - 09:06 AM Dave- Parking is free on Sunday in Portland. There are no big parking lots in the vicinity of Longfellow Square but street parking should do. I would expect Garnet to drive in, hell or high water; I've known Garnet for more than 20 years. It will be a great evening for those within walking distance. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: SINSULL Date: 16 Dec 07 - 06:36 PM Concert was cancelled when Garnet was stranded in Boston because of the storm. No word on a rain date. SINS |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 16 Dec 07 - 09:15 PM Well, I'm hardly surprised. Nor and Eli may have paid a brief visit to Andy's Pub earlier in the day but the rest of the Roll & Go gang hunkered in; we're asking them to re-schedule in two weeks. Guest Dave is strangely silent but maybe that's because he's hunkered down in some place without internet access. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: kendall Date: 17 Dec 07 - 08:56 AM I couldn't get to my mailbox let alone Portland. One of my favorite Stan Rogers songs is The Field Behind The Plow. Garnet's violin was just beautiful. |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Dec 07 - 11:04 AM My memory of Garnet's manic fiddling has to be the first time I heard the band play "Witch of the Westmoreland." Hopefully the concert will be rescheduled. Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Garnet Rogers-Portland,Maine Dec,16, 2007 From: Jeri Date: 17 Dec 07 - 11:51 AM He didn't play fiddle when I saw him in ... I think it was October. He had guitars and a mando-synthesizer thingie. He experiments just a bit more than I'd like, but if those experiments yield ONE song like Night Drive or Sleeping Buffalo (which feature echo-delay), I'm not going to complain too much. I'd heard Night Drive before, but when I bought the CD, I listened a lot. You drive while you listen or not - you can hear the road under the tires and feel the little rocking bumps when you drive over the pavement joints. The drummer was absolutely brilliant on that, with the car kicking up rocks and going over rough pavement, and at the end, I swear it sounds like the driver got a flat. |
