Subject: ID this Ballad book From: michaelr Date: 18 Jan 04 - 06:23 PM I picked up this book at a yard sale. It's been re-bound and the title pages are missing, but on page 1 it says "The English and Scottish Legendary Ballads". It begins with Sir Patrick Spens, Edom O'Gordon, The Heir of Linne, the Merchant's Daughter of Bristowe... and the last entry is a 50-page long Robin Hood. From the notes to the individual songs, it appears that the editor did quite a lot of collating from different versions. He mentions Child, Buchan, Percy and numerous other sources. Who can tell me what I've got here? Cheers, Michael |

Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: Jimmy C Date: 18 Jan 04 - 11:53 PM Could it possibly be part of The Harvard Classics with the original cover missing, containing only the lyrics (no music) I have a copy (circa 1967) with all those songs and many more. ? In perfect condition I might add |
Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: Sandy Paton Date: 19 Jan 04 - 05:42 PM Which volume of the Harvsrd Classics contains more than a few of the Ballads? My 50 volume index lists a few that appear in volumes 40-42, but no single volume containing more than that. Am I missing something because my set is what the booksellers politely call "vintage?" Sandy |
Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: michaelr Date: 19 Jan 04 - 05:56 PM There are 628 pages, including an index of first lines, which tallies to (if I didn't miscount) 185 songs. The typography looks turn-of-the-century (1900, that is) to my eyes. In the back there are ads for other books by what I assume to be the same publisher, Frederick Warne & Co., Bedford Street, Covent Garden (London). There's also an ad for Rowland's Macassar Oil ("promoting the Growth, Restoring, and Beautifying the Human Hair"), Rowland's Kalydor ("for imparting a radiant bloom to the Complexion"), and Rowland's Odonto or Pearl Dentifrice; as well as an ad for sheet music ("New Drawing-Room Pieces Just Out, By The Most Rising Piano-Writer Of The Day" - one Harold Thomas). Does any of this help? Michael |

Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Jan 04 - 09:30 PM Okay, Masato, how did you do it? Do you have a 120 year old book just laying around the house, or were you able to find that book online somewhere? When I searched on the publisher and other keywords I still mostly came up with dozens of hits for Peter Rabbit. SRS |

Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 19 Jan 04 - 09:43 PM Always specify the publisher if you have details. A search via Google for "legendary ballads" warne gets you further information; armed with which you can get more, and so on. |
Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: michaelr Date: 19 Jan 04 - 11:20 PM Gargoyle, I did not start this thread to try to sell the book. I just want to know what it is. If it's worth money to you, why don't you tell me? (And then make me an offer I can't refuse... ;-) Masato may be close, although the size of my volume is 6.75x4.75". There is an ex-libris that says "The Hively's - 1885 - C-Bar-C Ranch". |
Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Jan 04 - 11:59 PM I've seen BookFinder, but haven't used it. Interesting--I'll play with it and see how it differs from some of the others, like ABE and Alibris. I just looked--I have BookFinder in my "favorites." Looks like it's time to go poke around and see what else I've forgotten I have in there! Malcolm, that was the sort of search I did, using Google Advanced. It seemed that so many of the book sellers had combinations of books that the keywords weren't bringing any exclusivity to the search. SRS |
Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: michaelr Date: 20 Jan 04 - 12:08 AM Strange, Masato -- Book Finder returned no results when I searched for that title and/or author. Only one of the sites that Google threw up was of any help, saying this: Roberts, John S. The Legendary Ballads of England and Scotland London: F. Warne, 1887 I guess that's what it is, then. Not, apparently, a well-known ballad collection, I take it. Thanks all, Michael |
Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 20 Jan 04 - 09:12 AM Most of the universities with listings in COPAC have copies, it seems, as does the British Library of course. There appear to have been at least two printings in the "Chandos Classics" or "Chandos Poets" series, c. 1868 and 1887, and John S Roberts himself was from Newcastle... |
Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: Stilly River Sage Date: 20 Jan 04 - 10:08 AM Once you have a good idea what it is, finding a copy to compare it to shouldn't be a problem. You could even do something so simple as to make contact with a librarian at a library with the book in the collection, and fax a couple of pages back and forth to see if they compare. You'll find they generally enjoy this kind of mystery! Meanwhile, I went into WorldCat and found five citations. I emailed the detailed version of each to myself, and here they are.--SRS Database: WorldCat Query: (au: John and au: S. and au: Roberts) and (((ti: LEGENDARY and ti: BALLADS and ti: ENGLAND) AND ti: SCOTLAND)) The legendary ballads of England and Scotland. Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: Billy Weeks Date: 20 Jan 04 - 01:00 PM I have a very nice copy of this book (said he smugly) which I bought about 40 or 50 years ago. It is in Warne's 'Chandos Classics' series, in a nice nice cloth gilt and decorated binding, published c1887, which puts it in the middle range of the Sage's list of editions, above. The end papers are publisher's ads. Roberts, in his preface, acknowledges his debt to William Aytoun and Francis James Child. |
Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: EBarnacle Date: 20 Jan 04 - 01:33 PM So, what is the value of a clean copy worth, just as a matter of curiousity, he asked? |
Subject: RE: ID this Ballad book From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 20 Jan 04 - 01:54 PM Not a great deal. There are "good" and "very good" copies currently listed at prices ranging from £15 to £25. Alibris has one at £49, but they are middlemen and often impose large mark-ups on normal dealers' prices. I avoid them where possible. If selling to a dealer, I doubt if you would get more than about £10, maybe less, for G or VG: a bit more for "near fine" or "fine", I expect (these categories are very subjective, of course). |
