Subject: BS: The Royal family and the S S. From: GUEST,East 17 Date: 31 Aug 06 - 08:55 PM The Windsors' links with Nazi Germany remains an embarrassment. Princess Michael of Kent's father, Baron Gunther von Reibnitz, was a Nazi party member and SS officer. Prince Philip's sister, Sophie, was married to Christopher of Hesse-Cassel, an SS colonel who named his eldest son Karl Adolf in Hitler's honour. Indeed, all four of Philip's sisters married high-ranking Germans. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: Les from Hull Date: 01 Sep 06 - 02:26 PM Fighting on both sides, Stig. To do otherwise would have been treason in the days of mass conscription! This thread shows a deep misunderstanding of the relationships between the various European Royal Families. Because of intermarriages (and mainly beacuse of the large familily and Victoria and Albert and the desire of many other countries to have marriage connections with what was then the most powerful country in the world) you'll find relationships like this wherever you go. It means nothing in terms of the present UK Royal Family at all. So if GUEST,East 17 has any thieves, murderers, paedophiles in his/her family... |

Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: Paul from Hull Date: 01 Sep 06 - 02:29 PM Well, though not a direct answer to your question, Stigweard, THIS is interesting. The relevant extract says: From the strictly formal point of view, writes AJP Taylor in his Oxford History of England 1914-45, Britain's entry into the first world war was declared "as though King George V still possessed undiminished the prerogatives of Henry VIII". A characteristically arresting thought. But this is just the start. "At 10.30pm on August 4 1914," Taylor continues, "the king held a privy council at Buckingham Palace which was attended only by one minister and two court officials ... The cabinet played no part once it had resolved to defend the neutrality of Belgium ... Nor did the cabinet authorise the declaration of war. The parliament of the United Kingdom, though informed of events, did not give formal approval to the government's acts until it voted a credit of £100 million, without a division, on August 6." -Wrong in itself, but there certainly doesnt seem to be any hesitarion on the part of King George V. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: Liz the Squeak Date: 01 Sep 06 - 07:08 PM Queen Victoria's vast family married into most of the royal families in Europe, and in the first world war we may have been fighting her 1st cousin's mob! Queen Victoria was held, on her deathbed by her grandson, son of her daughter Vicky. He was Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces during WWI, and his son was a field commander. He is better known as Kaiser Wilhelm II. His abdication in 1918 lead to the rise of Chancellor Herr Hitler. So yes.... the Royal Family of Britain (formerly known as Saxe-Coburg, before George changed it to Windsor) was closely connected to various departments of the German government.... so what? Scratch any family hard enough and you're going to find a connection to someone you'd rather not be associated with - unless your family lived in one village for over 200 years and didn't do much but farm, fish and thatch. Scratch the present Pope hard enough and you find the head of what was formerly known as the Inquisition - choose your baddie. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Sep 06 - 07:59 PM There was another thread, Chamberlain and Hitler, active before this one was sgtarted. That thread covered a lot of this subject. I wonder why there was a need to split this off and start a new discussion. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: Paul from Hull Date: 01 Sep 06 - 08:09 PM Well, I been active in both threads, Mister Joe, & for what it worth, I dont mind them being combined, if thats what you would like to do? We certainly dont seem to need both, I agree |
|
Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Sep 06 - 08:26 PM I can't see combining them, at this juncture. Still, I wonder why we so often have five threads on more-or-less the same subject. It seems to water them all down. East 17 posted more-or-less the same thing in the Hitler/Chamberlain thread, and an interesting discussion followed. I don't understand why the new thread. Can't say I know what the answer is, but I wish there were an answer. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: Barry Finn Date: 01 Sep 06 - 09:15 PM #6 don't open that can of worms. Well be crossing the SS, the Bin Laid-ins & the Royal Saudis, the former South African government & the Blairs with the Texas teetoatalers, the Oilers, the Great Deppresion, the Christ-ones & who know what else. Keep the headlights on the Brits, they don't have squat on us, we could certinaly show them how to play the bed jumping game in the 21st century. Of course we MAY learn a small bit from some of the elder players, but not much I'd wager.More so that we could show them a trick or 2 that they have put to test yet. Barry |

Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: LadyJean Date: 02 Sep 06 - 12:18 AM My sister was involved with a former member of the Chicago Latin Queens, the ladies auxilliary of the Chicago Latin Kings. I kept my own counsel even when said former queen was arrested for riding a stolen motorcycle. I kept silent when she slashed my sister's tires. Because NOBODY has ever been able to tell my sister anything. But I did not belong to, nor am I in sympathy with, any street gang. They just aren't my kind of people. And I am a FLAMING heterosexual. One might consider two other notable Britons. Unity Mitford was deeply attached to Hitler, calling him "Hittles". Her sister Jessica was a communist. Families are odd things. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: Stu Date: 02 Sep 06 - 06:21 AM Interesting article Paul, and I had never realised the Monarch was able to make decisions like this as late as the early part of the last century. Frightening stuff. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: Paul from Hull Date: 02 Sep 06 - 10:34 AM Surprised me too Stigweard Maybe he COULDNT, technically, but once the decision was made, there was too much 'deference' to the Monarch to do anything about it? Plus, that was hardly a situation that could be reversed.... |

Subject: RE: BS: The Royal family and the S.S. From: Little Hawk Date: 02 Sep 06 - 12:50 PM "The Windsors' links with Nazi Germany remains an embarrassment." Does it? (yawn.....) So what? If Hitler had won the war, then upper class British family links with Churchill and Mountbatten would be an embarrassment, wouldn't they? And who really gives a damn? I know I don't. |
