Oh My Dear Secret Santa! I don't know how I missed your message from late October. No, I wasn't studying my workmate's, er, educational cards and literature (she said, batting her eyes demurely). Honest, I was just trying to help out a fellow librarian! All right, I did count it as a reference question for the monthly statistics, but I never even saw the goods. Really.
As for those wonderful cards you posted, I have the older ones, and Guide Cats II as well. {Many thanks to Camsco and Old Songs Folk Festival}. I'm drooling over the newer titles, though. Belive me, I study such of those cards as I have, and review them regularly.

My goodness ... my "magnificence"?   I'm quite taken aback, SS! But please hold back on the cat. I can't think how you'd transport it which wouldn't cause distress to the cat or the transporters, and I am convinced that our resident mog (who doesn't see me as magnificent except in terms of opening cat food packets)would be quite put out.

oooohhh, I received a postcard!!!

it was sent by the Elves (or elvi!) & shows Graceland, which must be the home of the elvi's! But it was postmarked St Petersburg, Fl.

what with Graceland being in Memphis, Tennessee, 860 miles from St Petersburg, Fl, that makes a very long trip, but as elvi could fly all around the world on their hunt for goodies, perhaps it's not so far.

I think I have all the goodies rounded up and piled in a heap smack in the middle of Gift Wrap Central. Now all I have to do is put bows 'n stuff on them and maybe write some clever explanations. (Explanations for Christmas presents?!? Yeah, sometimes a good idea.)

Then package them up with plenty of padding for the trip and entrust them to the local postal authorities.

Looks like you might receive the whole kit and caboodle well before Robert Burns' birthday if this keeps up!

Now, how about a few hints, Santa dear? Robbie Burns birthday is still a couple of months away, so does that mean you live far from me? Or does it mean that you spent so much on my pressie that you had to send it by slow elf mail instead of raindeer express? Oh, no, please don't tell me you hired that elf I had employed last year? I'm telling you, he thought the direct route from here to Orkney was via China and Australia..

Well, I haven't heard from you for a while, are you being good? No? I thought not!

Three of my gnomes headed in your direction a while ago and it seems as if they're lost in the outback. I know one's a bit on the slow side so he might still be travelling but maybe you could keep a lookout for the other two before the final one sets off for the reindeer-port? Wouldn't want all four wandering around, they might not come back for work next year!

Thank you for your letter. I do like the idea of things other than cookies. You are correct in the fact I eat far too many of them on my run.

I am at the moment in BIG trouble with Mrs Claus. When I started looking for books you would like I started reading all my favourites and she couldn't get me to do anything. She has now confiscated them and locked the book store :-(

A Christmas Story for people having a bad day:

When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the Pre-Christmas pressure.

Then Mrs Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven knows where.

Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.

Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had drank all the cider and hidden the liquor. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all the straw off the end of the broom.

Just then the doorbell rang, and irritated Santa marched to the door, yanked it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big Christmas tree.
The angel said very cheerfully, 'Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't this a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?'

And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas

Well, I'm finally finished - with your present, at least. The usual last minute snags, of course. I had every intention of dropping it off on Christmas Eve, when I make my usual rounds, when I had a visit from the head of the Reindeer Union. Seems that your area is under an aircraft warning, and the reindeer refuse to fly there out of fear of being eaten - something about a giant red dragon? As a result, I was forced to consign your gift to the capable hands of the Post, and I was assured that it should arrive sometime between next Monday and St. Dwyn's Day.

The box itself may be opened - the contents are individually wrapped. You should, of course, wait until Christmas or the solstice holiday of your choice to open the obvious gifts - with one exception. There is a small package wrapped in foil from Mrs. Claus that should be opened (and consumed) promptly. The packing material has been carefully selected for your enjoyment.

Are there really dragons in your neighborhood? Would they be interested in hiring on? I can't pay much, but I will supply all of the reindeer they can eat - the buggers breed like mad, and I'm only allowed to keep twelve at any given time.

Well, my dear, the elves have been working very hard to find the best presents they can considering the constraints on the North Pole Exchequer this year. And a bundle of goodies is on its way to you, clearly identifiable by the words "A Secret Santa" on the outside of the package. Do not be taken in by the box, which was simply a convenient way of holding things together. If you wish to open one or two things before Christmas Day, that's between you and your conscience. I've called off the surveillance team - they're far more active now in the Palace of Westminster, dealing with all sorts of ruffians.

Thanks, Santa - I shall make sure the postman is protected from the local dragon. It's a bit of a hazard at this time of year, when the flames from the dragon's digestive system are more powerful than the summer.
As to your idea about working with the dragons and thus disposing of your surplus reindeer, all I can say is that you'd probably better get really fluent with your Welsh.   They're fussier than the Welsh Language Board about mutations and suchlike and the slightest mistake can result in a nasty burn.
I'll let you know on the appropriate thread when the package arrives!

I have finally trekked over to the post office. Our fate is in the hands of the postal gods, but they say it'll get there in time. When it does, you don't really need to wait until Christmas to open it, because, strictly speaking, it's not a pure Christmas present. A birthday sprite asked to enclose something in the parcel. We both decided against the chocolate covered cats. They could be a customs problem. Ho Ho Ho.
