You did, didn't you? So did I. But take a look at this....

Yes it CAN!!!

This is what will probably happen not too long after Chongo gets elected president. By the way, he's playing the cool dude in the blue jacket who knows "everything about women".

The confusion in many people's minds, is that TV is there to inform and entertain.
TV is there to make money for the station owners, and they only commision popular TV shows to attract bigger audiences, because more audience, means more advertising revenue!

TV has also paid my husband's wages and kept a roof over our heads for many, many years and, by way of the health insurance provided for by his employer, paid for my heart surgery making sure I could live a good while longer than it looked in 2004. Yes, a lot of it is crap, but there are also good shows if you aren't too prejudiced to look for them.

The above sample is a stupid, not well done parody. I happen to enjoy Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune at times. They're just trivia games much like the card game Trivial Pursuit. It's a lot better than all of the blood and guns violent popular shows AND prurient pseudo news shows shown during prime time when children are still awake. At least from J and WoF, kids can learn some fun stuff.

Then there's PBS and all of the interesting things covered on the History channel, old treasures shown on Turner Classic Movies channel, etc.

It's not all bad, nor is it all good. I reminded of this:

There is so much bad in the best of us
and so much good in the worst of us
It hardly behooves any of us
To talk about the rest of us!

Our TV went at least a long decade ago. We only have 3-at-a-time Netflix. We watch just what we want to watch.

Yes, fine, fine. We're all so serious here all the time, and determined to fight with each other daily about one sort of politically volatile shit or another..."Oh, I'm so UPSET!!!" "What do you mean by that, you jerk?" "You'd know what I mean if you weren't such an idiot, wouldn't you?" "I make a point never to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent." Bla, bla, bla.

But what are your views on the coming massive takeover of television by the primate entertainment lobby?

Hmm? Is it a good thing? Or is it a bad thing? Will chimps actually make better TV shows than humans have in the past or will we see a sharp decline in both acting and directing?

And the last most vital question of all: Do we even friggin' care? I know I don't.

Chongo looks pretty spiffy in the leisure clothes, doesn't he? ;-)

I notice that Chongo Chimp has precious little knowledge of women. Does that reflect your own knowledge, Little Hawk? :)

Ebbie, I can hardly overemphasize that the differences between Chongo and myself are legion. They cover almost every conceivable facet of personality and lifestyle. ;-) That's why I enjoy him so much as a character. He allows me to get completely away from myself.

Chongo is under the impression that he knows a vast amount about women. Simply vast. (I don't know if he's right about that, but that's what he thinks.) Thinking that makes him happy and gives him a lot of confidence...and that's always advantageous in dealing with other people or other apes, right? So it probably helps him quite a bit, and even if it doesn't, he figures he's doing great and therefore enjoys himself. How can he possibly lose with a system like that?

I know enough about women at this point, given past experience, to know that I'm probably considerably better off just having them as friends, not lovers, because it's a lot less complicated that way, and it's a lot easier on the nerves and basic sanity level. Besides, I like being alone most of the time, and I can't even sleep if someone else is lying in a bed next to me. Chongo can sleep through just about anything if he needs to.

Does that help? ;-)

There's a lotta stuff I'm serious about. But I did that show just fer a laugh and a few bucks so's I could pay the rent. I got a few contacts in the film industry from back when I was palin' around with Cheetah. Every now and then I get a small part in somethin'.

How's about that idiot who asked fer a vowel? Ha! Ha! What a jerk. Of course it was in the script, so what else could he do? I know the guy, and he ain't really an idiot. The thing I find sad is that the whole production was bein' run by people not by apes. Rank paternalism is what I call it. That is gonna change bigtime when us apes get equal rights.

As a good friend to - and creator of - Chongo, you might spare him some future embarrassing moment by writing him a note to tell him that 15 seconds is not quite enough time

ah, heck. Forget it. Enjoy yourself.

When I was working in radio back in the late 1960s and through the 1970s, I ran into an old-time announcer who would tell the occasional person who would call in and bitch about something, "If you look at your radio set, you will note that it has at least two controls. One changes the station and the other turns it off. If you don't like what you hear, I suggest that you use either one or the other."

Same holds for television sets.

My wife and I do watch a fair amount of television. Rarely commercial channels. We have two local PBS affiliates on which we can watch such programs as Masterpiece Classics, which recently aired several British film versions of Jane Austen's novels (Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Emma, a couple of others), a few years ago, an excellent multi-episode dramatization of Charlotte Bronté's Jane Eyre, with Zelah Clarke as a very convincing Jane and Timothy Dalton as the brooding Mr. Rochester, Masterpiece Mystery (tonight's is a production of Agatha Christie's classic mystery, Murder on the Orient Express starring David Suchet as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Other well-crafted mysteries are Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett and Inspector Morse with John Thaw. Excellent comedies such as As Time Goes By (Judi Dench, Geoffrey Palmer), comedy-dramas such as Doc Martin (idiosyncratic doctor—barfs at the sight of blood—with a lousy bedside manner, and his love-hate relationship with his various patients in a small town in Cornwall), and gritty police drama about four older police detectives assigned to solve old, unsolved or re-opened cases, called New Tricks. All well written and well acted.

In non-fiction, PBS affiliates offer such things as Frontline (current events in depth), Nova (science and nature), Independent Lens (independent films and documentaries), and a lot more. Not to mention the excellent Ken Burns documentaries. In music, Command Performance, Live from the Met, Live from Lincoln Center. . . .   Recently an unusual dramatization (modern dress version) of Hamlet, with Patrick Stewart (Capt. Jean-Luc Picard) as both Claudius and the ghost of Hamlet's father.

There is also the Discovery Channel and the History Channel.

It's very fashionable to poop on television. But most evenings, if you can't find something worth watching on the boob tube, you just ain't lookin'. Some evenings, you even have to make a choice. And of course you can always choose not to watch at all. Nobody's holding a gun to you head.

Are they? If so, you have an entirely different problem.

Yes, but that's not what this thread is about, Don. Please go back to the first post that started the thread, click on the link, and you will see what this thread is actually about. This thread was created strictly for humorous purposes in regards to chimpanzees. It has nothing whatsoever to do with launching any kind of serious debate about the relative merits of TV...good or bad...and it was not intended to provoke another endless round of acrimonious arguing between various contentious people here on this forum.

I know I can't stop you from doing such arguing, however, if you feel you must.... ;-)

But I am simply informing you of the original intentions that lay behind my launching the thread.

Will things improve when and if Chongo is elected? Or will they get worse? That is the question. (or rather...those ARE the questions, to be more precise...)

BTW,...I am recording tomorrow night, in the (other)studio...if it all goes well, I'll post it. This one is, so far, 28:43 long..it might get longer too..if I can help it!

I figure, you gotta play to either make them get up and dance, sweat, and buy more beer, or make them weep!

Being as providing background music, for people to get drunk, tell each other lies, just to get laid, and act obnoxious, isn't my favorite thing, I figured I'd make 'em weep!....YEP!!!..blew them away!

This keeps happening with this particular piece..but people seem to love it!..people whom I don't even know, even gather around either of our vehicles, when I park it, and leave the sound system on, playing it. Hope to unveil it soon to you all!

Same piece that is being seriously considered for a major film score...but I'm not allowed, at this point, to say who.....yet!

Cheers to all of you, as well!

Love to hear it, GfS...

I recorded one marathon song I wrote back in '96 entitled "Legend of the Churchill Tunnel"... Went close to 12 minutes... Too much song fir me... Never did it live 'cause even tho I wrote it didn't mean I memorized it, too...

That's why I play the blues these days... I mean, if ya' don't remember a verse then just pick out one from another song anf throw it in... That's what all the ol' Mississippi country blues guys did and I fully understand why... Don't hurt yer head too much...

Waving back fare-the-well

I have a hairline much like Capt. Jean-Luc Picard's. I note that William Shatner appears to have much the same natural coiffeur, but—he has "taken steps."

Not that I care to go that route myself, but I really wonder how he managed to train that hamster to sit so quietly and motionless on top of his head.

Got so much in a rush, I forgot to sign in....now I had to post again!!! Just like we've said for years...."Slow is Fast!"

Bobert: "Love to hear it, GfS...
I recorded one marathon song I wrote back in '96 entitled "Legend of the Churchill Tunnel"... Went close to 12 minutes... Too much song fir me... Never did it live 'cause even tho I wrote it didn't mean I memorized it, too..."

This one I've done, and do, live. My engineer said it was just shy of 40,000 notes...and I remember every one!...even when I throw a clam!..(unless I improvise a little)

I once had a 19 to 20 minute one, that was vocals, but this one is an instrumental....in movements!..It tells a story..using NO words!...that was the game! People have told me of either 'pictures'(images), or emotions that they get...and what is COOL, is that most of them are exactly correct..or near...and its stuff you don't find much,in most music!

Off to record, right now.....CHEERS!

Oh, I can do 20 minutes of instrumental... Kinda John Fahey-ish... You know, just free association jammin' never to be repeated again note for note... Seems that there are a number of escape riffs that are in my head to use when things aren't exactly heading in the right direction... Fahey, however, would pass on the escape riffs and end up lost in the pointless forest of musicology...

I respect anyone who can hold onto a 20 minute instrumental and play it the same way twice... Above my pay grade... lol...

(BTW, Fahey was a severely troubled man...)

You know, funny you mentioned that; last night while recording, I went off into an improvisational 'escape riff'...and in listening back to it, this morning, I went "Holy Shit!..That was great!"...now I gotta figure out what the hell I did, learn it, and re-compose that part, and do it over again....Awwww, back to the Communion of cigarettes and coffee, sacrament of composers!

Now the dang thing is going to be 34 minutes!

So that's what I'm doing now, but thought I'd take a 'Mudcat Break'! It's cool to have someone on here to air out to!..(Beats stupid politics!)...less oppressive, too!

I know what ya mean about tryin' to figure out how to replicate a riff... Seein' as I don't record much (unless in someone elses' studio) and I don't write or read music I kinda have to cram new stuff in immediately with repetition... Even then it might not stick because I use so many open tunings taht sometimes I am clueless as to what exact tuning I'm in???

Me, too, on the break, sans the cigarette, that is... Got the after lunch coffee, tho which sets me up for my afternoon 15 minute nap befoe headin' back out to do battle with the farm...

Hey Bobert,..and anyone else whom this may concern,

If you don't read or write music, let recording be your pen and paper...especially when playing with two guitarists. Sometimes, in spontaneity, you come off with some REALLY cool shit, but have no idea, just what the hell you did!...just play it back, and pick up from the last clam(mistake), and learn it by ear, from there! That goes for anyone else playing, too...sometimes you get a blend of strings and tones, that just comes off great. Its not just a one time thing..YOU CAN DO IT AGAIN!...and by the way, in case you've noticed, people will buy a whole album, for maybe one or two songs in it...and in those one or two songs, there might be just several seconds of great tones, that caught your ear!!! IT IS WORTH THE EFFORT!!!! Then after that, as my friend Mairead says, when asked, "How do you do all that, and play like you do?" She replies, so calmly, and matter of factly, " Practice, Practice, PRACTICE!"

Mairead practicing

With much practice......

Mairead performing the same song

However.....she knows how to read music...(actually she has three Masters and a PhD. in it)...but nonetheless, Practice practice practice!!!

Regards, GfS

I prolly have 20-30 hours of recorded stuff, GfS... I mean, about 5 years ago I came accross a reel to reel that not only had some folk stuff that I wrote and performed in coffeehouse in the 60's but also one of my old bands when I was still primarially a drummer??? Not too bad, either...

Recording is just so cumbersome for me... If I had a persoanl assistant to keep all the stuff organized it'd be one thing but I don't and *time* just kicks my butt every day... I often say to the the P-Vine that we oughtta just sell the farm and move to a small house where she could have a little back yard for her gardenin' and I'd be able to get out to perform more... But that ain't gonna happen... Heck, I'm down to about 12 perfomances a year because of *time*...

Sucks, but what you gonna do???

BTW, I do "practice" every night for at least a half an hour... At this stage in my life it's more just trying to cram more lyrics into my feeble brain 'cause I can purdy much play whatever I want to play...

BTW, GfS... Try to find my Facebook page... There lotta Bob Harrisons out there but I'm the one with a piccure of me performin' with my "Back Porch" homemade slab geetar... Then we become friends and then it might be easier fir me to hear yer stuff...

Sorry, folks...

Now back to crappy TV... Hey, I like 'ol black and white stuff... An' smaltzy chic flics... The rest, other than sports, suck...

Bobert, Very, very cool for you to offer that. I may just do that!...seriously!....Get back to me on that...my wheels are turning.

As far as practice, on a good evening,(and on this piece),I have started at about 9:30, and sometimes go to 6 or 7 the next morning.

Just got in from the studio, and clicked this thing on...been thinking about ya'....and if anything I suggested might help. Tonight, when recording, I went off what I wanted, a few times, and recovered magnificently, and am still trying to get used to it. It only bothers me, that I never played the original lick through once right!!..and I'm used to playing and hearing that way, so it throws me off a little. My sound engineer, says it was a really great performance, and not to worry about it, because 'other people' would never notice.....but, you know the 'artist's syndrome'.......picky, picky, picky...sorta like practice practice practice.

Hey, that reminds me, did you check out the links?......Personally, I thinks she's great! When you see her perform, either live or on a video, it's hard to imagine that she studied music, for years...in a convent!..True story!

Anyway, I'll look forward to your next reply...or anyone else's.

Warmest Regards..and keep practicing!..even try new licks!

Yeah, I did.... The girl wear me out with her movement... Very tiring to watch... lol... No, really, she is one fine fiddle playing folkie... I never been into Celtic all that much but have been around it at festivals nuff to know the good from the not-so-good and this ol' gal is in the good column...

BTW, seein' as you like both Celtic and instrumental if ya' ain't allready familiar with DeClan Masterson you oughtts check him out... Some seriously organic music...

Well, we're off to the beach fir a day or two just to get away from the work around here... Plus we got rain so we can take a couple days off and all will be fine here...

BTW, I was listenin' to an ol' Pete Drodge (drudge, droge) song last night which I'm gonna try to learn the lyrics for... Allready can play it note fir note... It's about this guy who kills himself on the 4th of July... Kinda catchy little morbid song...lol...

Oh well, surfs up, cowabunga and all that...

Bobert, I went to 'Facebook', and only found two Bob Harrisons, but I think that the ones I saw, were not you. One with a Cockatoo, and one on some thing suspended going over some trees. Perhaps you could post a link. Thank you.....(until then, I'll keep looking.

"You got a lotta nerve! I last way longer than 15 seconds. Not that it's any of yer business." [Chongo]

That reminds me of a story (not enacted on TV, alas). A guy comes downstairs in the morning and his wife is in the kitchen, just putting some eggs into boiling water.

"Quick," she says, "Make love to me!"
So, surprised, but pleased, he leads her to the settee in the breakfast nook and goes at it. When he's finished, she gets up and goes back to the stove.
"Egg timer's busted," she explains.

Ba-DAA.

And to the subject at hand:

And I find if I didn't have cable channels, I wouldn't watch much TV. Myth-Busters, PBS' Mysteries, and National Geographic, plus, every four years, the World Cup (but not the Olympics), add news shows of various kinds, and that's about it.

Bob

Just in a little while, Dear....

Woman: Noo! I mean don't you want to be with me-e-e??

Man:
                  (Slightly irritated)
Yes Dear, but not just right now.

Woman: Oh, Come on..please!!

Man:(Placating) Ohh, alright, I'll tell you what..I'll be up, shortly...

(Woman has look of eager anticipation)

Man:........and if I'm not up there in about 45 minutes, you can feel free to get started, without me.

I never thought TV couldn't get any worse. 1000 channels on one satellite system and I only use it when digital terrestrial is rained out - which also affects the satellite at times. Needles to say I don't subscribe to the scrambled channels.

Mind you my other satellite system (analogue) is free on the one channel I want.

But when re-scanning the terrestrial system I have to delete a load of non-interest and that is all pretty mindless crud IMNSHO.

Big Brother's Little Brother? Not seen even 1 second of it but I can imagine that as "worse" getting "worser".
