Subject: BS: 200th Oktoberfest Munich- renactmenttent From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 17 Aug 10 - 11:11 PM Anyone going to the Oktoberfest this year in Munich? 200th anaversary of the first one. They will have special beer, special steins and a reenactment tent with rides etc in the old style. My old home town- was there for three years as a student. Sources for German drinking music of 1810-1850? Conrad |

Subject: RE: BS: 200th Oktoberfest Munich- renactmenttent From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 18 Aug 10 - 06:07 AM I was thinking about it, I haven't had a proper holiday yet and it seemed like a good idea. Unfortunately I don't have a tent which is what I would rather do than spend too much on accommodation. It does sound really good fun, my dad went along to it quite a few years back and he really enjoyed the atmosphere and the music and was bowled over how such a dainty serving wenches could carry that many steins in their arms. He was quite in his element there because he speaks pretty good German and still knows some of the songs, I will have to ask him what he knows. |

It contains the core songs that have been around for century or two. http://mysite.verizon.net/cbladey/oktsale.html Oktoberfest Songbook Although the Oktoberfest is huge and the singing and music is wondrous the scene appears at countless local fests throughout Bavaria all the time. Sort of like firemans carnivals in the USA. If you plan it right with a little local research you could hit several in a holiday period. They might also be less expensive than the Munich Oktoberfest which is a wonder to behold but it is huge. Conrad |

Subject: RE: BS: 200th Oktoberfest Munich- renactmenttent From: Allan C. Date: 18 Aug 10 - 12:15 PM Carmen and I attended Oktoberfest last year. Oh, the humanity! I have never before seen so many people in one place. We made the mistake of watching the pre-opening parade, which was just glorious. However, immediately afterward we were pushed through the gate by what was probably hundreds of people, but felt like thousands. We held tightly to one another for fear of either being separated or being trampled. I mean it. No joke. When things calmed down a bit it all became much more fun. But, to be honest, having done it once, we will never do it again. It (or at least, the opening,) is not for the timid or faint of heart. I'd much rather drink my beer at a restaurant or gasthaus for much less money. But then, I've never been much for crowds anyway. |

Each brewery has a tall cart with women handing down free liters of beer to drink as you walked past. Must have had about 7 liters that way each year free. You have to like crowds and learn how to get your bier, generally outside the main tent was the rule where there were picnic tables then I would wander around inside round and round. Go during the day as evenings get very busy. My favorite Munich fest was the stark bier fest on the Polanner Knockerberg never crowed and the beer much better |
