Somebody goofed. There is a terrible message inherent in these two posters. Unfortunately, I can find no humour in them.

There was a subplot on one of the episodes of "Two and a Half Men" (probably one of the raunchiest sit-coms on television) in which eleven-year-old Jake (the half-man), who was not quite what could be called a dedicated scholar (!!), had to do a book report. There was no way he could read the book because he had let it slide for weeks and it was due tomorrow morning.

His uncle Charlie (Charlie Sheen) gets him a copy of the Cliff's Notes on the book in question. Later on in the show, you learn that his teacher gave him an "F." Uncle Charlie looks at Jake disgustedly and says, "You've got to do a little more than just put your name on the Cliff's Notes and turn it in!"

Not just egg on the face, but a whole omelet!

In googling more info about this poster, I found that Wal Mart had a re-call of a tee shirt because the design printed on the shirt was actually a Nazi SS logo, a skull.

I designed tee shirt art for several decades, shirts sold in the National Parks, resorts, and yes, even WalMart. You always have to be careful about references for designs.

One wonders which of those two was first, and which was plagiarized.

My pure guess is that the Nazi one was first, based only on the name of the sponsoring organization for the American one. "Meat Council" doesn't sound to me like anything during WW II.

Regardless of who stole from whom, adapting preexisting images is a perfectly legitimate practice in art, and particularly commercial art.

Adapting is legitimate, yes, but the courts say you must change the image more than 20% and it must not appear like a copy, or it is a copyright infringement. I'm sure the Meat Council designer was not worried about a nazi copyright and probably never thought anyone would know. I've had to sue over people copying my designs. A judge would call this a copy, not adapting.

The first (left-hand) poster "America's Meat Roundup" is, in itself, fine, but when portrayed alongside the Nazi poster, another "meat" roundup comes to mind.
