There are a couple of folk songs I've heard snippets of that I'd love to find -a humorous song highlighting the glories of the world's most useful invention-duct tape!; one discussing the benefits of dry wood for the wood stove; another silly song asking "why don't they make diapers of a bright yellow color"; a lastly a beautiful tune about Robin Hood "your outlaw days are over" is in the chorus. Thanks for any help!

Hi fishy: if you go to the top right hand corner of this page and type in "robin hood" in teh search box, for the DigiTrad database, there are a bunch of song lyrics which come up, which you could then check out for the one you are looking for.

I tried "duct tape" and didn't get anything, but that doesn't mean it isn't in there. Keep trying in different combos of words and you will probably find all of the songs. if not, somebody on here willprobably know them and let you know.

The Duct Tape Blues is by Joel Mabus and is on his "The Naked Truth" CD. He describes duct tape, with its companion useful product WD40 ab the "Yin and Yang of America" cos you can fix almost anything with duct tape but you need WD40 to get it off.

I once read a book by a country doctor in Vermont. He told a story about an old farmer who came to him to have his l;eg looked at. He had slipped with a chain saw and cut his leg open. Bound it up with Bag Balm (an ointment for cow's udders) and duct tape. Told the doctor those two things would take care of just about everything!

Re: wood....I'm familiar with a VERY humorous song about the different kinds of wood to burn, needing to stay on top of making sure the woodpile doesn't get too low etc. Chorus includes..."I could, I should....be out cutting MORE WOOD." Click here. The singing style itself adds to he comedy in the song. Does this sound like the song you're looking for??? I'm not sure of the correct title nor of the singers names...(female-great harmonies as well). I can get the title and singers name if you think this is the song you want.

Kris, you.ve just had a revelation that all of us have had at one point or another. I've seen it labeled "Duck Tape" in recent years, probably because of that. Favorite Red Green usage: Satellite Dish from a patio umbrella lined with potato chip bags (inside out of course, shiny foil side) duct taped together.

Always remember, if you can't fix it--Duckit!

Accually there is ONE thing in this world that cannot be fixed with duct tape: a duct! Its been proven numerious times that duct tape does not work in that application, but any other time it is the universial fix that always works.

A lot of tapes have appeared that are similar to real duct tape recently, but aren't quite as good. Some are marketed as duck tape. Real duct tape is used on ducts when the ducts are new, to seal them air tight, not to hold them together. Once a duct is very old it gets too dusty for the duct tape to stick, that's why it can't be used to fix them.

Ed Trickett sings the song with the line "why don't they make diapers of a bright yellow color". I'm quite sure he's never recorded it anywhere. The reason for the bright yellow diapers is for when "the baby comes down with the flu!"

I have it somewhere on a tape recorded of a concert Ed gave at, I think, the Pickin' Parlor in New Haven, CT back in the 70's. It is quite a humorous song. I will try to dig out the tape and transcribe the words. It may take a few days though.

One of the great things about being Canadian is hockey, which I devoted my youth to. A secret that all hockey players know is that Duct tape doesn't hold a candle to white hockey tape. (Black Hockey tape is made from a different material and although it has it's uses, is not nearly as versatile)

My latest application is musical. My sister bought a glass slide to play bottleneck guitar with. As her fingers are more slender than most slide players, it was not staying on her finger securely. A little white hockey tape carefully installed on the inside of the slide and presto, a snug fit. She now credits me at gigs as her slide tech.

If it can't be fixed with white hockey tape, it just can't be fixed. Fellow Canucks, I'm sorry for revealing national secrets.

Glass slide problem? I fold a paper towel to an appropriate length, wrap it around my little finger and then put the slide on. It will stay in the slide for future use. Quite comfortable.

Duct Tape, and it's unsung sister, Gaffer's Tape are staples in my home. (Gaffer's comes in about a hundred different colors to blend with anything. The name comes from the "gaffer", or guy who runs the lighting truck in movies.)

I keep several rolls in various colors to use for about any job. Of course I do gigs with the SCA, in which Duct Tape is considered one of the miracles of this world. Their armor is patched with it, the padding beneath is held on with it, tents are repaired with it, and the weapons they use are rattan covered in the silvery stuff.

The best story I ever heard about DT was from a cousin in the Air Firce. He claims that holes in the skin of aircraft were regularly fixed by simply slapping a chunck of the silver miracle substance on them. The resulting patch would hold even at speeds faster than sound!

Of course, this is the same cousin that swears the "three legged chicken" story is true...

Duct tape's little cousin, Hotglue, is a real dynamo. I first discovered its potential when I was replacing a cassette deck that a well-respected auto-stereo shop had installed in the pickup truck a few years before. Turns out they had used Hotglue to sorta "custom-mold" freeform plastic holding widgets. I would have been pissed off, but the stuff had held perfectly, probably absorbed shock, was a snap to remove, and turned me on to the greatest thing since...duct tape.

Being a Canadian Prairie girl, I remember that all farm pick-up trucks had mandatory repair kits, which always included duct tape and binder twine. Add a butter knife and a girl can fix anything.

Duct tape: No woman should be without it. It now has a place in history in breaking the glass ceiling. My workgroup had to give a presentation to a panel of CEO's and we got an inside tip that the entire panel was male. The competition was stiff and all groups were using every possible tactic to get better exposure and to make the best possible impression on the panel.

A member of the group suggested the females add strapless cleavage to our already first-class presentation, which led to complaints of the uselessness of tape-up bras. One girl said she uses duct tape. (She keeps a roll in her bedroom for emergencies. I didn't ask what constituted an emergency). The only problem was getting it off: a hot, oily bath, a s-l-o-w lifting procedure, and saying good-bye to a layer of skin. Having been a sports kid in my younger days, my don't-leave-home-without-it item was Pro-wrap, which she had never heard of. We have now created the perfect push-up bra. The Pro-wrap minimizing contact with skin wherever possible, and support in all the right places~!~!

(We won.)

We took it a step further and made ribbons (like the black, red, white ones people wear to show support for various causes), to wear when giving presentations. It helps break the nervousness, because we have this 'inside joke' that we can share. If you're getting a little tense, just looking at a partner's ribbon brings back memories of a very creative planning session and a smile!

Here ya go:

Tape-up bras are useless to anyone bigger than a size A. They are crescent-shaped, somewhat stiff pieces of tape that are applied to the underside of your breasts to give support when wearing strapless tops/gowns. Great theory, but the makers should consider 'industrial strength' as a possible marketing technique.

Pro-wrap is a skin-coloured thin foamy gauze that you wrap your feet (or hands or whatever ails you) with prior to taping up, so the tape doesn't stick to your skin. It is stretchy and strong and pourous, so breathes a little bit better than tape. It also sticks to itself, at least long enough to keep everything in place until you can get the tape on.

OH! Sheye, something I can relate to! Industrial strength indeed! You would enjoy some of the conversations I've had with m'self and Roger about bras and the idiots who design them. Usually I just go about like the baby-crone goddess and let 'em hang in ripe and glorious abandon. 'Course I don't have to do any high powered sales, either. Back when I did, I was fettered and did pretty good with my "projections", sales, that is!

I'm sure we all know lots of uses for duct tape. One I'm glad that Garrison Keillor let us know about was how to avoid being seated on a crowded airplane. You secretly attach a very noticible amount of duct tape to the wing and tail section. Suddenly noone else wants to fly in that plane.

There are now many grades of quality in "duct tape." Many years ago, in the Navy, I personally saw duct tape used to make a successful temp repair of 100lb pressure steam line. Never w/out it since; But be careful to get a good grade of the stuff. I once used it to patch a LARGE tear in the top radiator hose in my old Land Cruiser; It held, & lost very little water, in Texas summer heat until the week-end, when I had time to get to the parts house & get a replacement. (Finals week in college.)

No shade-tree mechanic (or household) should be w/out it. I have initiated my wife to the wondrous capabilities of this stuff as well. We use it for lots of stuff.

The song "Why don't they make diapers of a pale yellow color/ why don't they make diapers in a pale golden hue/ why don't they make diapers of a pale yellow color/ and green for when baby comes down with the flu," is from the (warped?) brain of Joe Hickerson. The former archivist of folk culture at the Library of Congress wrote this ditty. I don't know if he recorded it, but among his friends, it's his most requested song--we request him NOT to sing it. There's a line in it about diapers that "play "Aura Lee' rectally". Apparently someone in Williston, Vermont came upon some newfangled diapers taht played a little tune when they got wet to inform parents who couldn't smell or whatever that their attention was needed. But there was a dispute over the tune which these diapers played. Some swore that it was :Love Me Tender," the 50s song made famous by Elvis Presley, while others insisted that it was an old American tune called "Aura Lee". The two tunes are one and the same, of course, but the dispute gave rise to a verse in Joe Hickerson's song about the diapers. Now that I've remembered his story about it, I need to ask the staff in my brain to try to remember the rest of the words that underlie the story.

There is an archive of the astro pix if you go to the site, the duct tape picture is on May 1. Of course, anyone who's seen the movie "Apollo 13" knows how duct tape was used to save the lives of those three astronauts - Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and that other guy. Seriously, I think that part of the movie was historically accurate.

There was a recent article here in Canada in the National Post about the gentleman who is attempting to perfect a grizzlie-proof suit. Apparently this suit has many other excellent qualities, as you can be shot at, run over by a truck, beaten with iron rods, etc. and come out smiling. The picture in the paper showed him being attacked with a chain saw, IIRC. There was a documentary made about him some time back, with one of his earlier suits. He tried to attract a grizzlie to attack him, but couldn't interest any.

Anyway, the article said that the inventor couldn't afford proper molded parts for certain critical parts of the suit, so he used massive amounts of duct tape. I can't remember the exact number, but it was something like 7000 feet of it. So duct tape, in sufficient quantity, will protect you against grizzlie bear attacks it seems.

It of course has many uses -- a friend of mine, in a Red Green moment, made a bird feeder out of an old pole, old pump parts, a plastic hood, a pie pan, and duct tape. Worked quite well. Personally I like to use it to seal packages, and think of the poor soul on the receiving end trying to get it open.:)

A colleague's brother builds satellites. They use a lot of duct tape--but they're careful to call it Rocket Tape.

True story

I retired from the Air Force last Feb. My second-to-last assignment was in Korea. Shortly after I got there, I was required to go to a series of briefings, one of which was on war-time first aid. The guy giving the briefing sounded and looked like Jeff Foxworthy. (You Might Be a Redneck If...) He explained how you you used whatever was at hand and improvised - "And everybody has...duct tape!" Seems you can bandage somebody, splint anything, apply traction, stabilize a neck, put someone in anti-shock position, rig up a back board, create a litter (the thing you carry people on) or just use the roll for a pillow.

Once he got into it a ways, he'd start on treatment of the next injury. He'd ask "OK, anybody know how you can help a guy with a sucking chest wound?" and we'd all yell "Duct tape!" True, he did talk about other options, but he always came back to duct tape.
