Subject: BS: Do You Want A Tree Trunk? From: LadyJean Date: 05 Mar 11 - 12:27 AM I had part of a tree taken down in my back yard last fall. The trunk is still there. If you want firewood, or you're into woodworking, it's yours for the taking. I live in Western Pennsylvania, so if you're in Australia you probably don't want it. But if you live nearby get in touch with me. I'm afraid I don't know what kind of tree it is. But the trunk is about 7 ft long and about 6 inches around. |

Subject: RE: BS: Do You Want A Tree Trunk? From: wysiwyg Date: 05 Mar 11 - 10:06 AM We had ours rolled into place as a settin' bench near what later became a campfire-pit. We have another tree that needs to come down if anyone wants to come drop it and take the trunk or push it to the firepit! Our challenge in getting that one dropped is the same anyone faces if they have a tree that is down or "needs downed." If it is not wood that someone wants, they will not come take it away for free. So if you can get someone local to tell you what it is, you might be able to FreeCycle it. Or you might find a local 4H or Scout group, etc., that would be interested. If not your best bet is probably to chainsaw it into manageable chunks (make one first to see if it's manageable!) and use them in landscaping decor. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: Do You Want A Tree Trunk? From: Bill D Date: 05 Mar 11 - 01:18 PM As a woodturner, it is pretty crucial to know the type. If the wood seems 'interesting', and has branches/crotches, and is not rotted and is a 'hardwood' some local woodturner 'might' be interested. wait...6" 'around' or 6" diameter? I expect you mean diameter. |

Subject: RE: BS: Do You Want A Tree Trunk? From: Bobert Date: 05 Mar 11 - 01:39 PM Here's what you do with it.... Drill a bunch of holes in it, pour diesel oil into them several times over a couple week period, light it on fire and put a 55 gallon drum with holes in it over it and let 'er burn... Might take a week or two but it will burn itself out... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Do You Want A Tree Trunk? From: Desert Dancer Date: 05 Mar 11 - 01:45 PM That would be for the stump, Bobert? Presumably not for the rest of the downed tree... |

Subject: RE: BS: Do You Want A Tree Trunk? From: Dorothy Parshall Date: 05 Mar 11 - 03:24 PM Bobert: Shame on you!! What a disgusting bit of pollution, and totally unnecessary. I tried emailing Quebec wood turners to give away a quantity of choke cherry. No takers so it went for fire wood. 6" diameter is not that big. But I had woodturners in Ontario who were delighted to get 4" lilac. They made earrings and other small objects. They sent me a pair of earrings made out of my lilac! Prob best for stove wood or just put it in the woods to return to the soil. |

Subject: RE: BS: Do You Want A Tree Trunk? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 05 Mar 11 - 03:34 PM Not much use unless lilac or other very hard, wanted wood, as noted by Dorothy P. I have a Shubert cherry that will have to go, the trunk useless but it has a large burl at the base. A woodworker I know has asked for it. Burls can be excellent, but won't know its quality until it is cut. |
