Hey y'all--

Can anybody recommend some really down-n-gritty blues bars in Boston? I moved from Oxford, Mississippi to Lebanon, New Hampshire some time ago and am in major blues withdrawl. Also, what are some good Boston bands to look for?

In case anyone's heading to the hill country of Mississippi, be sure to visit Jr's (Kimbrough's) Place in Chulahoma (I think it's still around, although he very sadly passed away last year)and RL's (Burnside's) Place, just down the road a couple miles. Very cool. If you're going to Clarksdale, Red's is the best place I know of, since the roof of Martha's Blue Diamond caved in several years ago.

All the best!

Jim Carter jcblues@yahoo.com

ps, if you would email me, that would be extra-cool.

In regard to Boston, don't spend the night at the St.Charles Hotel (tenderloin district) unless you want a case of the crabs.

Blues is not my thing (was a long time ago) so I don't have alot of info but for Blues in the Boston area you should try the House of Blues in Harvard Sq. in Cambridge. Check the Boston Globe Calendar section on Thrusdays, they have lots of listing including some blues jams. I'm sure you'll be hearing from some other locals here that are more up on the Blues than I am. By the way back in the 60's there were quite a few blues musicians from the Boston area that went off to play with Muddy Waters, BB King & others most have ended back in Boston. My sister recently went to a reunion of people a good bit were former players for some great people so you'll be in good company in Boston, since the 60's it's been a place of great music & musicians. Barry

Hi Gargoyle, not to worry, there's never been a Tenderloin district in Boston (San Francisco), it's most likely the Combat Zone you're thinking of which has been slowly disappearing, not in the same fashion as Scolly Sq, soon to be, hopefully, gone. Barry

Pick up a local "Music Scene" style publication from your the big music stores in the area. They will advertize the blues clubs. There is a great blues scene in Boston area. You may find your way out to Framingham, or even Worcester, but you'll find some clubs worthwhile. It has been years since I lived there, so I can't help you with specifics any longer.

Hey, you don't have to go all the way to Boston for the blues! Come on down to the Rynborn in Antrim, NH for some hot blues most weekends! Luther Guitar Johnson Jr. is there most of the time- if he's not playing, he's watching! I'll try to get you the web page. Welcome to NH- it ain't the end of the world!

Jim....

By all means, check out the New England Blues Calendar at:

Pretty thorough.

Try Johnny D's in Somerville (it's outside city limits, but on bus line).

There is a lot of blues in Portsmouth N.H. Check the Muddy River Smoke House. If you can make it through the winter, Portsmouth also has a great blues festival every August.

Just across the border in Newburyport, MA The Grog/ has a blues jam every Sunday evening and mostly blues Fri. & Sat.

My favorite Boston Area blues band is Barrence Whitfield and the Savages. In Massachusetts North of Boston look for The Megawatt Blues Crushers or Fly Amero.
