Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browse From: Bill D Date: 31 Jan 10 - 01:01 PM and the first 3 pics in the list ARE Arborvitae from Bobert's generosity... thanks again, Bobert. (and I still have more) ------------------------------ ahh...I see, Susan. Sadly, most of those in the list aren't even here anymore. I had a VERY good Fall season. I have others, but I was just putting up a batch of stuff to test this browser and wanted a variety. That big item at the end is actually my first item for my new Spring collection...(you know, like fashion designers.) I am supposed to actually be doing stuff to our 'real' website so that I can show stuff that is available. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browse From: Bill D Date: 01 Feb 10 - 11:00 AM Open again: and I added a number of old favorites from various folders.....and 4 more of the new big Yew Root piece that Rita took. We are still studying how to photograph it best. I think I have to set a narrow aperture for better depth-of-field and do some daylight shots. (I am liking this Opera trick...as I added pics, I had to keep reminding myself that I was NOT 'uploading.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browse From: Bill D Date: 01 Feb 10 - 11:06 AM password is still 'woodstuff' |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browse From: katlaughing Date: 01 Feb 10 - 07:24 PM Thanks for adding more pix, Bill! I love the last ones best, of the finished yew root...fantastic. Also, the yew root vase #34...stunning. Years ago you posted one which was a vase kind of like that, or maybe a bowl, anyway it had just one open space in it and I fell in love with it. It was the first time I'd seen a wooden object made with all the "warts" from Cinderella to Princess, so to speak. Do you remember which one I mean and do you have a picture of it which you could put up? I always wear my "pink" heart when I go to the cardio. Other times I wear the Siamese cat pendant Micca brought me from Rita. You are both such incredibly talented and creative folk! |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browse From: Bill D Date: 01 Feb 10 - 07:31 PM Oh my...years ago? I have a lot with something similar to the "one open space" feel... I have some that are still 'online' in the space my ISP gives me. I'll take a look and see.... do you remember anything about the relative size & color? (I am so glad you have those, and that they 'feel' right. Means a lot...) |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browse From: katlaughing Date: 01 Feb 10 - 10:38 PM I don't remember size because there was nothing else in the picture that I remember to compare it to...it would be on your old site, the extree one, I think. Colour...golden with some red, maybe? Sheesh, ya think I'd remember! (It just dawned on me, after all these years that extree really means ex tree. Duh..when I see it, I always think "extry, extry, read all about it!) They do feel SO right and I am honoured to have them. Thank you. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: Bill D Date: 02 Feb 10 - 10:54 AM On my business cards, it is printed eXtree...*grin* (I'll poke about later...maybe it will hit me which one.) (It took ME years to develop a way to remember wood patterns & descriptions....and so many are 'brown' or 'reddish', that many woods are hard to identify without having some leaves & bark...etc.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: frogprince Date: 02 Feb 10 - 01:21 PM FINALLY, I llinked when it was available! Those pieces range from the gorgeous to the stunning. D'ya ever come to Michigan for the Ann Arbor fair? Dean |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: katlaughing Date: 02 Feb 10 - 03:18 PM Well, maybe I would have gotten it if I'd seen it with the upper case "X", but ya never know...sometimes stuff just flies past me, ya know?**BG** Did I ever tell you the reason I never sent any aspen?(You told me you would need a *joint* can't remember what it's really called, and/or a bole.) They branch off way high...too high to be reached without a ladder and I think the forest service would not approve of that. BUT, reading of your curing through burial, I wonder if an old piece off the ground would be of interest? We do see branches down and/or ones which have been culled. There's also a lot of fallen juniper and pinyon pine, but the stuff on the ground is usually old and very dry. They are beautiful when polished up, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: Bill D Date: 02 Feb 10 - 03:46 PM Dean... no, I limit myself to about 4-5 local shows during the year. At my age, I don't produce enough volume to travel around..but thank you for the good words! Kat... it was never a big deal about the Aspen. I 'suspect' that it might be pretty bland, and I have NO idea if it spalts in any interesting ways. If you ever see a piece on the ground where the end grain looks streaky & such, and isn't already cracked & rotting, take a picture! (No use using the mail without being sure...and I DO have lots of wood. Now, I know a woman who used to turn, and who went out of her way to collect Juniper when she was out that way. I just have never tried it...but maybe sometime.... |

Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: GUEST,Jim Kennedy Date: 02 Feb 10 - 06:38 PM I was looking up Pogo songs and I found your Pogo post from 2003 referncing fearless Fred the footpad dread, followed up by Mamie minded Mam till one day in Singapore. My brother and I, now in our 50's still sing them to the befuddlement of others. Great work!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: Bill D Date: 02 Feb 10 - 06:41 PM *grin*..yep, that was me! I was immersed in Pogo long before I knew anything about wood. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: Sooz Date: 03 Feb 10 - 01:33 PM I keep trying to look but you are always offline! |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: Bill D Date: 03 Feb 10 - 02:00 PM I'm on now... Grump... I enabled it earlier, but somehow got turned off. I'll double check during the day. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: Sooz Date: 03 Feb 10 - 02:50 PM Well worth waiting for! You have some beautiful things there. I too live with wood shavings in the carpet and the bath - to see some of Mr Sooz' woodturning, click here . |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: gnu Date: 03 Feb 10 - 04:10 PM Beautiful, Sooz. The toadstools are amazing! |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: Bill D Date: 03 Feb 10 - 04:24 PM Wow... really nice. Really quality turnings. A lot of it is JUST the sort of things I like to do. I really like the Elm Burr. (A friend brought me a medium sized piece from England several years ago, and I did something similar to the hollow form with the small opening.) I usually don't do pieces larger than 11" diameter, as that's all I can do over the bed, but a few platters and my latest Yew root...and a few others.. were done with headstock rotated. Does Mr. Sooz (evidently Mike, by name) do regular shows? |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: Donuel Date: 03 Feb 10 - 05:59 PM How is she at achieving mid tones or even colors? |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: Bill D Date: 03 Feb 10 - 06:22 PM ?? wrong thread, Donuel? |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: Sooz Date: 04 Feb 10 - 04:11 AM The biggest platters Mike has done are 24" although I do remember that one had to be reduced to 22" to remove the damage incurred when someone knocked it off the stall! Mike does craft fairs leading up to Christmas but has a permanent stall at a craft and design centre. (They charge rent and commission, but all we have to do is to tidy and replenish every couple of weeks or so.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Bill D's test of wood pics in new browser From: katlaughing Date: 04 Feb 10 - 04:09 PM Beautiful stuff, Sooz. I esp. like the look of the olive ash. |
