I didn't know her well, only distantly as a critic gets to know a performer generally; but I am oddly sad to find that someone I knew at all has been dead for all this time without my knowing. I'd also add Jill Jackson Miller, who co-wrote "Let There Be Peace On Earth" with Sy Miller, whom she later married. Not sure if they're considered "folk," but I guess it depends on how broadly you define "folk." I would also add Miriam Makeba to the list. |

Already mentioned were Sandy Paton, Mike Seeger & Mary Travers who all died last year. I did not see the names of Bess Lomax Hawes, Richie Schulberg, Mary LaMarca, Susan Contento (in NYC)who died last year. I'm also going to drift from the thread's focus to share my pleasure that three singers who seemed desperately ill in December 2009 are still with us, Jean Ritchie, Jerry Epstein, & Ray Fisher. |
