I think You Tube is a great index to behavior and sociology. It shows what people think that is important to exhibit. Decency is by definition an ambiguous word, an index into someone's morality, an appeal to ethics or social responsibility, a way to divide what someone thinks is "good" or "bad", or a weapon to use to demonize an idea or person that you don't agree with.

For the most part, YouTube seems quite productive and creative, informative and
revealing, exhibiting rare talents and unusual performances, and is an antidote to the
rubber-stamped performances that are offered by media as entertainment.

I love YouTube.

I agree with Stringsinger. YouTube, to me, is a marvel, a door that almost inexplicably opens to vast expanses. When I want to re-hear something from years back, there it is. Most often not visual but audio is what I'm looking for, most of the time.

And I use it for contemporaneous things too. I would hate to be without it.

As for the comments- rude or otherwise - I rarely open them. If I found someting disturbing or unhelpful I would simply close it or go on to something else.

There is, indeed, a limit at which forbearance ceases to be a virtue, josepp. With that in mind, I suggest that you find a means to track down the moronic posters on Youtube who have upset you and many others, hunt them down in their filthy lairs, and dispose of them one by one in a most hideous manner. In doing so, you will help to clean up Youtube and make a name for yourself as well. You may even get on the 6 O'clock News if it all goes well.

Subject: RE: BS: Youtube and decency
From: Little Hawk

Smokey, I have endured the like myself. That is to say, I have been irritated by ignorant people who post their insults and their moronic comments below Youtube videos.

Briefly.

I was tempted to make sarcastic and witty comments at those poster's expense on a few of those Youtube videos...and I had some fun doing so. You can tell immediately by the response you will sometimes get from those lads that they are entirely unaccustomed to subtle humour, but they do usually get the drift eventually that they are being made sport of and not taken seriously in the least. That really bothers them. ;-) They hurl more insults, to which I reply in a completely tongue in cheek manner, using BIG words to further confuse them, and I get a few laughs out of it. Therefore I have occasionally amused myself at the expense of various obscene and very ignorant lunkheads who post nasty stuff on Youtube. It was quite satisfying! ;-)

Other than that, however, how much of my time do I really want to devote toward getting upset over such a phenomenon? Not much. It would get in the way of doing much more enjoyable stuff...like posting on this thread, for example, or reading a good book, playing my guitar, doing my daily work, etc...

And my getting upset over a hundred thousand or more ignorant Internet yahoos will not in any way prevent them from continuing to be ignorant Internet Yahoos, and I know it.

Therefore I give it very little of my time, except when it momentarily amuses me to do so...which happens occasionally when I'm looking at stuff on Youtube.

We can rave all we want on Mudcat Cafe about indecency on Youtube....it won't change the way Youtube is managed...but if anyone here seriously thinks that he can persuade the owners of Google to alter Youtube in such a way as to prevent such indecency from occurring in future, then I guess he should get busy and contact them.

So get right on it, you who will not practice forbearance in the face of Internet indecency. ;-) Do not delay! Contact the owners of Google RIGHT NOW and give them an earful. Raise bloody hell about it. Go ballistic. And I wish you luck with that.

Back in the 70s and 80s, I used to answer phones on PBS pledge nights. We used to get all kinds of creeps, calling up to say all kinds of foul things. We had no way, in those days, of identifying them, so they could say really clever things like, "How many hairs have you got on your pussy?" anonymously.

If there was a black person making the pledge pitch, we would always get some racist comments along with the obscenities.

Give some people an opportunity to comment anonymously, they'll say all kinds of crude, disgusting things.

(By the way, my response to the pussy query was, "I left my cat at home.)

I really can't be arsed to read the comments on YouTube. I suppose I would if it was my stuff they were commenting on, but I'd simply remove what I didn't like, as any self respecting fascist dictator might. What I wouldn't do is needlessly reproduce it here for the search engines to pick up.

As far as I can gather, the worst Josepp has had himself on there is an accusation of being Irish, which I personally wouldn't consider to be an insult, although admittedly the expression used could well be insulting to the Irish, or intended to be. However, when asked if he was Irish, he replied "hell, no".

They probably meant to say 'Mr Potato Head'.

"He never existed so don't lay awake at night worrying about it."

That'll come as a helluva surprise to Anne Hathaway.

I had an English profession (Shakespeare class) in college who, when questioned about whether or not Shakespeare actually existed, commented that there is a substantial number of people with a wild hair up their butts (Oh, shock! Oh, horror! Language, Don, language!) about this, operating as such people always do with no real evidence whatever, but insist on rattling on nonetheless.

"It fulfills the valuable social function of keeping them off the streets," she concluded.

Tsk, I go out for a few hours and come back to find Shakespeare never existed.. For the record, someone of that name certainly existed at the appropriate time but there are varying theories about who actually wrote the material attributed to that name, some dafter than others. A friend of mine wrote a book on the subject based on years of painstaking research - diplomacy and uncertainty precludes me from quantifying its daftness. Shakespeare's work exists though, there in all its glory for idiots to misunderstand. To be fair, there is much of Bob Dylan's work which I probably don't understand, but I wouldn't dream of denying his existence as an excuse, whether or not he really wrote it.

Perhaps they all, including Robin Hood, who has a pub named after him, both existed and yet did not exist simultaneously.

For centuries people in the English-speaking world would lie in bed, not lay in bed. Only in past tense would it be said "I lay in bed for the whole day." In present tense it would be said, "I intend to lie in bed for at least 7 hours and get a good rest."

Then along came the 60s and more and more people started "laying" in bed for some reason (present tense). I blame this lamentable change in grammar on popular TV shows like the Beverley Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Bonanza. It was part of the great yokelizing of America. The end result of such a process is people who go to Monster Truck rallies, watch NASCAR, say "nookular", and elect George Bush. ;-D

Of course, there would be those who would spell it with an 's' in preference to a 'z', but over here that largely depends on which university one attended. I've been to quite a few of them, but I was playing keyboards and smashed out of my brains, so I didn't learn very much. I believe Oxford prefers 'z's.

josepp, all I can tell you is that on all the videos I post on my YouTube Channel (WildeNotesMusic) - whether they are my own or videos of other people -- I use my settings to "Allow comments with approval" only.    That allows me to ignore the really rude, juvenile, unhelpful comments.    I don't censor them based on whether they like the video or not, but on whether the comment is clear, understandable, and basically civil.
So if someone wants to say, "Your singing is very pitchy," or "I hate your voice and your guitar work is very amateurish," I'll allow that. But if they want to post something like "You suck, bitch!" or "Boy, you look fat!" or the like, I won't "approve" the comment.

Millions of people view YouTubes and among them there are going to be those who are immature, mentally unstable, drunk, high on drugs, pissed off about other things & needing a scapegoat, or some combination thereof.   Don't let those folks spoil the good things about YouTube.    Some people "deserve a good lettin' alone" and that's the best way to deal with them.
