Subject: Who's going to Old Songs 2007?
From: Barry Finn
Date: 22 Mar 07 - 07:51 AM

I just got a flyer in the mail & it looks good.
I don't know yet if I'm going yet this year, it's been a while so I'm gonna try & make it. The line up's pretty good with Finest Kind (Canadian), Steve Tilston (my daughter loved him the last time we were there, me too), Sara Grey, Danny Spooner, Lou Killen, our own Jon Bartletr & Rika Ruebsaat, & Enoch Kent among others but really I love best is what going on around the festival & the workshops & the campsites. I'm not a real social butterfly but I do like that part too.
Anyways, I'm hoping & wondering who'll be there.

Barry

Old Songs Festival Website

It looks like a great year, and the only way I'd miss it would be if someone sent me to Kuwait! Brian McNeill will be back for the first time (I think) since I told him he sounded just like the guy who sang with the early Battlefield Band.

I just started making plans. Does anyone know the motel situation this year? Last year, they filled up very early.

Looks great as always - although before June, I need to master the art of being in five places at one time!

I'll be there, and I plan to camp this year. Last year I brought my friend "Princess Melanie" and she insisted on a hotel room. I paid for a campsite anyway and we hung out there when we needed a place to land. I missed the whole camping experience though, so I'm looking forward to going back to the old ways.

We'll miss you, 'Chucks! Hard to imagine an Old Songs without you!

We have a site near the main gate in the music all night area, and Dex has a site in the kennel across the street.

A Mudcat teeshirt goes great with a Maine State Tartan kilt, so if the weather is cool enough for wool, I may just wear them together.

You may have noticed "Herdman Hills Mangsen" on the list of performers. That is Priscilla Herdman, Anne Hills and Cindy Mangsen - a wonderful trio, each of whom is also a formidable performer solo or in other groupings. The trio will there all three days; Steve Gillette will be there on Friday and Saturday (not performing), but it's often the informal stuff that is the highlight.

I am stuck in sunny (not today) Colorado, except for the summer which I spend in Saratoga. Boy do I wish I could extend my summer!

I've been watching the forecast, and it looks like a decent weekend! Some clouds in the forecast, and there may be a shower or two - but it does not look like any major downpours and the temp will be in the upper 70's.   Sounds comfortable!

I've got my chair dusted off and I'm ready to go!!!

I was so worked up by bbc's "it's supposed to rain." You harbinger of doom!

Right now the Weather Channel forecast is for slightly cloudy, 10% chance of rain for the whole weekend. High on Friday 70 (!) going up to 76 on Sunday.

Anglo, I think BBC meant it is "supposed" to rain as part of the tradition of Old Songs!   What would Old Songs be without rain? (I guess a dust bowl!)

The current forecast is still promising, chance of a passing shower. Of course, it is only Wednesday - these things change!

Let's hope for the best.

Open house at our site (209) from 6.00pm Friday night. If you're around then come and say hallo, maybe sing a song or two.

We'll have some beer and chips, bring a chair if you can.

So,

We are sitting on 209 with a tent set up last night.
People coming by going "who are you"?
Why, we are Kendall and Jacqui!!!!
And what were your names, again?

Patiently waiting to see you both.

Our tent has a bigger awning.

We are at 302....need a hand setting up when you get there, we'll be about the area.

So...who what are your names going to be when you arrive?

Doryman and his mate.

I'll take some pics and send them along of all our pretty faces.

I'll be renting a U-Haul to empty out my Mother's tool shed on the Cape, where there's an Irish festival going on in the same town that I don't think I'll make either. Enjoy & don't give Kendall too much shit, he's had a recent lobotomy & will probably be going to bed early. I'll be missing the singing side shows of Danny, Jon & Rika, & JR, give 'em my best. I hope Jacqui's having a nice swim and that she brings any lobsters Seamus accidentally retrieves for dinner.

Doryman... they obviously need some sort of screening to weed out campsite poachers. Well, if Kendall brings a gun... You, incidentally, are in the campsite boonies. If there were tracks, you'd be on the other side of them.

I'm in 114 (I think). It's closer to the gates and the showers, but everybody tramps by having excited discussions when I'm trying to sleep. I'm trying to figure out what clothes to pack in a bag to bring. It dawned on me that I don't NEED bags - I have a car. The campsite stuff is already in there, so I need clothes and personal stuff, I need money and gas, and I'm outta here.

Sorry you're not gonna be there, Barry. You're missing Lou Killen too - a great year for acapella. Now where's MMario?

SINS, with a big wet yellow dog sleeping on her couch.

By the way, a man started to talk to me today at the beach. He thought I needed some help training my dog to retrieve. Then he added a story about some loony woman who swam out to retrieve her retriever who was trying to fetch a buoy and almost drowned in the process. I pointed to Seamus and said "That's the dog and no I am not the woman."
Damn fool kept taking Seamus' ball and refusing to give it back because Seamus didn't fetch properly. I gave him a look capable of turning him to stone and he went away. No wonder I am single.

Good morning,

Ready for day three at Old Songs. Many delightful sessions and concerts...good songs and nice people everywhere. Friday weather was kind of a blow down for tenters. Felt like somewhere in the North Atlantic rather than summer in NY. We attended many venues of song and music. Some good buys on used instruments and other items for sale. Roberts, Killen, Spooner, Jon and Rika all did some very fine music. Lots of fun at the Little Black Boxes event that John featured. Lots more wind yesterday with minimal wet weather. Kind of cool in the tent, but comfortable. We like the cold so it was good. NO dust. Fun evening with Kendall and Jacqui. And he wants to know how how people would ever notice the difference if I went crazy...Sure...this is like grasshopper...snatch the stone from my hand. Our poor spouses..lots of fun. Barry...take out the trash even though it is not your bag. And Mary...who was the dog officer you talked to last evening????
Hi Linn and Tom. Hope you are still on the mend and things are progressting.
Anyway, back to the festival. Lots more really good stuff coming up today.

If I had known the weather would be cool and reasonalby dry, I would have made it this year. MAybe next.

A rather strange dog warden called (with some giggly friends in the background) following up on a neighbor's complaint about my
"out of control" dog. This may be the same gentleman who follows up on out of control guests sometimes.

Earlier in the day a stray had managed to get under my fence and romp around with Seamus for an hour. Figured I was now the "owner" of the new dog. He actually lives down the street where the owner lets him out knowing he can get under their fence but...that's another story.

Common sense kicked in and I figured it was Peter. Sounds as if a happy time was being enjoyed by all.

WE've just got back after a seven and a half hour journey. Kendall was so tired he's gone to bed and that's where I'm heading in a few minutes.

I had a wonderful time, dashing around from one workshop to another kept me occupied for the best part of two days and I got to hear some stunning music.

Saturday night with the Souzas was a real treat and I'm looking forward to more of the same, hopefully, although putting Peter and Kendall together might be a bit risky!

I bought a couple of pairs of earrings from Don and a couple of CDs from Folk Legacy but didn't really have a lot of time to visit the vendors.

Animaterra mugged me for the shawl that I was wearing - I knew its owner was out there somewhere!

more tomorrow, after a good night's sleep.

OK - more.

Personally, I needed to clone myself to cover everything I wanted to hear. I spent most of the time following the likes of Enoch Kent, Louis Killen and Sara Grey around from location to location.

Sara was accompanied by her son, Kieran Means, a guy with a good voice and great guitar work. To hear the two of them together was wonderful. They're up in Maine in the next few days - google Sara Grey for details.

Enoch and Louis were in fine form and very entertaining. Louis did a song in Geordie dialect and, even knowing the dialect a little, even I could only understand about a third of what he was saying.

Herdman Hills Mangsten produced some amazing harmonies that were a joy to listen to. Finest Kind were brilliant, as usual. (Think they would come for a house concert in South Portland?) I enjoyed Danny Spooner's contributions - that guy can change from broad Cockney to Strine at the drop of a hat.

Emma's Revolution did a workshop on Secrets of a Healthy Voice, which was very interesting and left me with some exercises that I am sure will raise Kendall's eyebrow. Anything to improve the voice though!

The weather turned out pretty well, although Kendall had to roll up the awning to prevent the rig from taking off into the wild blue yonder.

All in all another wonderful time. This was the first American folk festival Kendall took me to in 2004 and Old Songs will always have a place in my heart. Long may it continue.

Had a ball but the car was sick going and returning. Had to skip a visit with friends on the way home.
New Lou story: He is working his way slowly to the stage for the Sea
Songs set, obviously dealing with the morning after the night before. Gets on stage, sits down and looks out. "Can someone turn out that bright light?" Jon: "It's the sun, Lou."
A very good festival.
At Sunday dinner, sat down with some of the volunteer crew and may have tracked down a the writer of a song for the Digitrad. Unfortunately, he died a few years back but his daughter is on the board of Old Songs. Have requested that she call me so I can get clearance for posting and general usage. Found friends I have not seen in decades, missed seeing Barry. Finally wrote a good first draft of "The Bold Young Maiden."

Lovely festival. Lots of great music. Bizarre weather Friday and Saturday with a truly scary fire about midnight Friday (an RV and vehicle totally destroyed.) Loved the humor of Enoch Kent, the fire of Brian McNeill, the raw talent of Bodega and Les Girls, harmonies all over (particularly Finestkind, natch!), and the high speed wit of the Arrogant Worms. Can't wait for next year, though already have heard the "The Fair doesn't want us back" rumor. Anyone know numbers? The campground crowd was definitely smaller this year.

Jeri tells me that the roving photog was about the barn during the Ballad Singing. Don't be surprised if you see a dozing silversmith on the Old Songs Website. The Ballads were fine, I was a victim of Jet Lag after a week in Arizona and driving into New York the day before. Honest and true. I was listening intently and singing along but Jeri insists I was snoring.

Danny Spooner just blows me away. His dynamic voice and unorthodox concertina style are such a perfect match for the songs he chooses.
I am sorry I missed him singing Anderson's Coast this year.

I swapped a few songs in Kendall and Jacqui's motor home on Saturday nite. Drank Kendall's Bushmill's.

Bought a new CD from John Roberts and Hollowfox gifted me a cassette song by the great blues interpretor, Poor Howard Stith.

Spoke too briefly with Animeterra, BBC, Maine Dog, EBarnacle, SusanDT,Dick Greenhouse, Sandy. I also saw some old friends from The Salt City Songminers.

I would wax more eloquent but I seem to have lost my muse at the moment.

Regards.

Don

Another lovely year. I sang with Peter and Mary Alice Amidon's chorus, followed concertina players around, and enjoyed the Worms and Sara Gray and Herdman, Hills, Mangsen, Finest Kind, the shanty sing, etc, etc.

Seeing dear friends such as bbc and Duane, Jeri, Kendall, Don M, Sandy and Caroline, Karen K, Hollowfox, Susan and Dick, MaineDog, Anglo, Kendall, and Jacqui was a treat

However: "Animaterra mugged me for the shawl that I was wearing - I knew its owner was out there somewhere!"

My version of the story is this:
Me: Jacqui, that's a lovely shawl!
J: You like it?
Me: I love it!
J: It's yours!
She threw it at me, really she did, and I wore it with delight and pride for the rest of the weekend.

Only 51 more weekends till next year!

The last two years Gail and I have added Peter and Mary Alice's harmony singing workshops to our regular schedule, so we have missed some of the things we did before. Actually, it was Jamison's that I got over served with, but it's all the same to me. Jack came by with his new banjo and sang a song that he had written. Very clever, Jack.
Animaterra stopped by for a beer, too briefly Allison.

My transmission developed a loud growling sound, sort of like a cross between a rumble strip and a didgeridoo. For some reason, keeping it under 60 made it go away. The combination of 60 mph and two long traffic jams caused us to be on the road much longer than I wanted to be. Yesterday, I changed the fluid and filter in the tranny, greased the U joints and topped off the differential. Took her out on the interstate and the noise was gone.
I had a great time at Old Songs, as I always do. It is expensive at 10 miles to the gallon and $34.00 in tolls, but, you can't take it with you.

Hi, folks,

I'm home & almost unpacked. It's amazing how little I seem to get done in a day. Of course, I could use the 90-degree temp as an excuse. Duane D. & I arrived at Old Songs for the 3-5 pm classes on Friday & stayed till about 4 pm on Sunday. We had a great time! I started seeing & hugging Mudcatters almost as soon as I arrived. I saw the following folks, but didn't spend much time with any of them--I'm sorry to say--too much good music to pursue: Sandy & Caroline Paton at Folk Legacy as well as karen k (Thanks for providing a home & meeting place for us!), dick greenhaus & Susan of DT at CAMSCO assisted by EBarnacle & Lady Hillary, Don Meixner at his silver booth (but I missed his charming wife, Cindy!)(btw, Jeri's earrings are gorgeous!), Bigchuck, Charlie Baum, kendall & jacqui (I *love* the shawl!), Jeri, Hollowfox, Animaterra (too little time together, dear), Pamela in Ithaca, Anglo (Sorry about that rain on Friday, John; I really didn't cause it!), Allan C & Carmen, finally met Ron Olesko (who was staying at our motel, in addition to assorted DC & NYC folks), Jon Bartlett who I saw perform & didn't realize was a Mudcatter, Dave Ruch who I saw several times. Dave devoted his weekend to introducing his 2 sons & a friend to Old Songs--a great way to invest the time, I think! Among those I wish had been there were certainly dharmabum, Bill Sables, Barry Finn, & MMario. Pardon for any I may have missed.

Duane & I wimped out & stayed at a hotel, rather than camping. The Best Western on Western Avenue was approximately a 20-minute drive from the festival site. The beds were incredibly comfortable, the room was clean, & the price included a hot breakfast buffet that was quick & more than adequate. Several folks from the festival were staying there or at the Days Inn right next door. I found that the AARP rate was actually a few dollars cheaper than the festival rate.

At the festival, my first stop was the choral harmony singing class with Peter & Mary Alice Amidon--great, as usual! It was held in the Sheep Barn, a large building w/ a metal roof. We had high winds that made it sound as though the building would be torn apart at any moment. Then, midway through the session, the skies opened & rain poured down! It was so loud, I didn't know, for sure, if it was rain or hail! The weather cleared then for a little while, but it rained heavily again as soon as the second act in the evening concert began. We had just settled down to hear the Jeremy Kittel Band--4 young men who show amazing potential; I feel quite sure we'll be seeing more of them in the future! The second act was Steve Tilston. By the time he started to play, it seemed pretty clear that it was going to get very wet. Many folks, including us, packed it in for the night. I felt badly for Steve. I heard, the next day, that, at the end of Steve's set, the concert moved indoors. By then, however, everyone would have been soaked through & the temps that night dropped to the 40's w/ wind. We made an early night of it & were glad of it.

Saturday, bright & early, we went to Sacred Harp singing, led by Matthew Wojcik, who did a fine job. In the past, Peter Amidon has been the leader & many of us learned from him. Now, it seems that he is concentrating more on the harmony singing workshops, although both he & Mary Alice took part in all of the Sacred Harp sessions. My next stop on Saturday was "Songs & Tunes of Canada" (It seemed like we had a lot of Canadian acts at Old Songs this year). Great line-up--Finest Kind, Arrogant Worms, our own Jon Bartlett & Rika Ruebsaat. I took a break for lunch & then went to the "In Sweet Harmony" session with Herdman-Hills-Mangsen, Amidons, Finest Kind, & Sara Grey & her son Kieron Means--all wonderful! Dropped by "Jewish Music & Songs" with Shelley Posen (of Finest Kind) & Simple Gifts. Shelley sang a song, "Fork Garden" that reminded me of "Handful of Songs"--very nice. I ended the sessions on Saturday with the 1-hour Shape Note book sing. Even though I only get to sing a few times a year, I'm getting a little better. I can almost keep up, except with the shapes on the fast songs!

We stayed for most of the Saturday pm concert (BTW, the weather on Saturday was wonderful--not too hot & a breeze--no rain!). Highlights for me were Arrogant Worms (absolutely over-the-top hysterical), Herdman-Hills-Mangsen (wonderful harmonies, fun personalities), Finest Kind (same as HHM--I just love to hear them! I particularly enjoyed Ann playing bass!). Another highlight, for me, is watching Jake Thomas interpret in American Sign Language. He has been a regular at Old Songs since 1992 & is a joy to watch. Although I am neither deaf or speak ASL, my dad's folks were both deaf & I appreciate the fact that Old Songs provides this service. Jake is such an expressive, entertaining interpreter that it is, sometimes, a tough choice between watching him & the performers!

Sunday, we were up early again & started the day with Sacred Harp singing. All day, I just moved between the Sheep Barn & Cattle Barn--both at the far end of the fairground from the vendors. I didn't have time for lunch & didn't see Duane again till the sessions ended at 3:30 pm. I had a not-to-be-missed time, though! After Sacred Harp, I progressed to "Women's Songs" with Sara Grey, Emma's Revolution, Ann Downey (Finest Kind), Eleanor Ellis, & Herdman-Hills-Mangsen. Then, "Gospel Sing" with Amidons, Stillhouse Rounders, Sol Weber, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines, & Magpie. In the same area, Gospel Sing was followed by a packed out audience for a 1-hour concert by the Arrogant Worms--a very interesting group. I closed my afternoon with a comfortable, low-key "Country & Old-Time Swap" with Finest Kind, Stillhouse Rounders, & Frank Orsini (of the Whippersnappers). After that, I met up with Duane quite easily. We pooped out on the closing concert, opting for an early dinner with my older son, who lives locally. Then, we headed home. Great weekend! With information we got there, we are headed out, this coming weekend, for our first Sacred Harp All-Day Sing, approximately 2 hours away, in Massachusetts.

Best to all,

bbc

I have to remember to check in here more often. I've been to Old Songs for pretty near 15 years (counting this one), and I've probably talked/danced/sang/jammed with some of you without realizing it.
Out of curiosity, who else volunteers at Old Songs? I've been working at performer hospitality since 2002, and generally like it; often, you get about 20-30 minutes of solid activity, then about an hour of relative solitude.
The thing about volunteering, of course, is you end up missing 10 hours of the festival. But obviously, if you plan well, you may be able to catch the performers you miss in one setting at another during some other point of the weekend. So even though I didn't see much of the David Munnelly Band, I at least got to watch them at the Sunday "Celtic Band Jam" with Bodega and the Jeremy Kittel Band -- which was just so bloody amazing. Never have seen three fiddlers playing and "skanking" at the same time. (I think the Irish word for it is "mighty.")
Also glad to see Helene Bergeron and Louise Arsenault from Barachois with Les Girls and Brian McNeill, the Worms of course, and was quite impressed with the blues harmonica of Annie Raines (whom I discovered attended the same elementary and high schools as my kids did).
The apres-concert sing Saturday night in Creature Comforts was wonderful as always, and I had to smile at the enthusiasm of Jon Bartlett, who whooped and danced to some of the songs.

Also: Did anyone catch Enoch Kent's Saturday evening set? He sang a funny little number, "When You See the Crematorium," I wouldn't mind learning.

I had a great time. I just posted my reflections about this years festival on my website - www.ronolesko.blogspot.com

I would have included more pictures, but my digital camera ran into some problems at the festival. The lens is experiencing a focus problem and also would not retract back into the camera at one point. I think it may have become damaged during the rain.   I am going to have Canon repair it so that I will hopefully have it back before Falcon Ridge.

I missed Old Songs and seeing everyone this year, but have a living memory from 2005: after attending the Bob Franke songwriting workshop, I was the proud owner of a song called "The Letter" which is on our new ShoreGrass recording. (You can find us on CDBaby for a listen). Whatever he said inspired me to write a song that I think turned out pretty well, so I'm hoping he returns again next year. That was my first and only songwriting workshop so far. If you do nothing else at Old Songs, the workshops alone are worth the price of admission.

I believe I saw Bob as audience during the weekend. That's one of the cool things about Old Songs. Many performers go there, whether they are performing or not. I've seen Lui Collins, Priscilla Herdman, & various others through the years. It's just a great festival.

On Fri evening, Lady Hillary and I ran into Lou Killen in the Creature Comforts area. When we asked him about his participation, he commented that he had contacted them too late to get on as a main act but was told to show up and he would included in workshops and other events. It's nice to hear of this kind of flexibility in a planning committee.

Sounds like another great Old Songs! I've just read this thread and your description on your site, Ron. Wonderful article. Made me feel almost as though I'd been there!

I'm glad to know that Finest Kind performed Dylan's THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'. Their rendition is superb....powerful and very moving.

I'm so glad y'all had a good time! I was sorry to miss this year - maybe next year!

KT
