Hi guys, benaway for Easter. I've already got a Hohner guitar, it's a Dobro copy, but I'd settle for a real Dobro! Shambles, how did you know I read the Radio Times? Actually, I only look at the picture; the fatures aren't as good as they were. (They never were - or is that Punch?)

Steve

"Cool Hand Luke" was on TV last night. I was hoping I could get the make of the banjo Paul Newman played but I'm not that good at banjo spotting. More interesting, though, was a young Dean Harry Stanton playing a Martin guitar and singing "Just a Close Walk With Thee", "Midnight Special", "Cotten Fields Back Home", and a spiritual I didn't recognize.

Welcome home Joe....... Your prize........ HHMMMM?

How about The Singing Nun's Greatest hits?

As for the flying vegetables, I think you started that by throwing a rotten 'Yarrow' (marrow) at us!

Does anyone know what Helen Reddy sang in the original movie?

As for the song the nun sang in Airplane, I'm sure it was a Peter Yarrow song, and I think it was "River of Jordan."
There is only one river. There is only one sea.
And it flows through you, and it flows through me.
There is only one people. we are one and the same.
We are all one spirit. We are all one name.
We are the father, mother, daughter, and son.
From the dawn of creation, we are one.
We are one.
Not one of Yarrow's more profound songs, I dare say.
So, do I win a prize, or is this when people start throwing the rotten vegetables at me?

Damn it, Lej, it ain't Sugarcane Harris..I've slandered the wrong guy! Now I've gotta find the record! Could it have been Hi-tide Harris? Anyway, why couldn't they have just used Huddie's own playing, or would that be "too rough" for movie goers?

Gene Autry played a D 45. Maybe he just forgot about it in the cabin one day!

The thread on the Silver Screen Cowboys got me ta thinkin bout this here thread. Who was the singing cowboy and what be the film, where at the end of a long trail ride our hero finds a ramshackled shack to bed down in for the night, reaches over into the corner, picks up an old Martin D45 someone years ago had left behind and procedes to render one more tune before we all go sleepy time?

Rick...you mention "someone named Sugarcane Harris" who does the Ledbetter playing in the Leadbelly film. I am familiar with Ed "Sugarcane" Harris who was an excellent jazz fiddle player. Was wondering if this is the same guy.

Sugarcane Harris was an incredibly innovative fiddler. His work can be heard on John Mayall's USA Union LP, and later on Zappa's Hot Rats and Weasels Ripped my Flesh LPs as a member of the Mothers of Invention. I don't know if he's still around...LEJ

Think I'm clicking in to your sense of humour. It's British, and you'd love it!

Just remembered another TV guitar player though. Remember when Ricky Ricardo would get out the old classical and serenade Lucy, Fred and Ethel with a few bars of Babalooo! He knew his barre chords as well.

OK, I suppose this thread should go the way of all flesh, but I can't resist this little trivia question. The VERY futuristic space ship "Red Dwarf" certainly has a guitar on board. What company can be proud that interplanetary wanderers have chosen it's product to play til the end of time? Hope they have a few extra sets of strings! No prizes, just Canadian congratulations for being very guitar-detail minded.

To the voice ofthe great Seed.

One slightly used 'gobby' Hohner Harmonica in C (that once played with The Blues Band), is waiting here to be collected. With the added bonus of a bar of Galaxy and a pint of London Pride, just to p--- certain people off.

Thank to you all for the info here, I am a lot wiser now. It is quite amazing where these threads go, isn't it?

Shambles, as originator of the question, you have to give Steve your own Hohner guitar. If you don't own one, give him a Hohner Blues Harp. I have spoken. --seed

Ronnie Cox also played guitar in Bound For Glory with David Carradine. And Cat is right, Cox has some guitar experience. He played at least a tune an episode in a TV series he did, I thnk called Apple's Way. William Schallert played a D-18 or 28 and sang on a Partridge Family episode, did both quite well. Stormin' Norman Schwartzkoff, Swartscough, Shortscloth, plays AutoHarp quite well. For an impoverished family in the mountains BillybobJimjohnJoeDonFrank Walton always seemed to have no end of Martin guitars kicking about. George Segal is a fine tenor banjo player(dixieland style). John Wayne even played????? and sang, sort of , in a "B" western in the 30's

Damn music is evrywhere you turn around.

Steve

I don't if like me you read the Radio Times but in this weeks edition there is a clip from the film which shows quite clearly that it was indeed a Hohner.

Congratulations you win the prize. Any suggestions as to what form that prize should take?

What song was actually being sung and any suggestions as to what other song would have been suitable?

Re: The "Airplane" thing......Someone might know the actual brand but it was a basic, mostly Martin looking P.O.S. Very similar to the P.O.S. that Ronnie Cox used in "Deliverance." In Dickey's book, Cox's character owns 2 Martin's and the one he takes is his back-up. Also, I'd give Cox at least a B+ in "fakin' it." He must have at least a bit of guitar background.

And while we're on the subject, Andy Griffith did play and used a D-18 on the show. I loved the show and I remember that the Martin was always convenient. In one episode Andy walks out on the front porch after getting up before dawn...and the guitar is leaned against the wall. Well he WAS the Sheriff... but the Martin took a hell of a beating!!!

Wasn't it a generic classical? The actual singing Nun played a Goya G17, as did Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music. Other great movie guitars: Groucho Marx strums a Gibson L 5 in a canoe (very well, I might add) and then throws it at a duck.(it has turned into a Stella by then)...Keith Carradine occasionally plays a fancy 70s Mossman in the incredibly bad Woody bio-pic. Bound For Glory......Roger E Mosely runs his hands back and forth on an original Stella 12 string (or a Marc Silber type re-issue) while the actor playing Blind Lemon fakes flashy modern hot lead playing on an old Stella 6 string in the equally awful (well, maybe not QUITE as awful) Leadbelly pic. Someone named Sugarcane Harris actually does the pseudo-Huddie Ledbetter playing.

One little bit of useless info Shambles, comes from one of "your guys". A lady brought me a George Formby brand banjo uke a few years ago and asked me to sell it for her. It was personally autographed by the lad himself. I thought this would make it pretty valuable, until I checked it out. Appears that Mr. Formby (or his people) signed EVERY uke that was manufactured under his name and many thousands were made! I got 50 bucks for her!

Rick

Looking at the thread on the songs that were sung in JAWS, I thought I would see if there were any sad souls, like me, who would know what make of guitar was used in the scene where the drip gets pulled out of the patients arm and they are all too busy singing along to notice?
