Preston of the Yukon and his dog "Yukon King"? He didn't have a horse (deep snow), but when he cried "Mush! On you huskies, On!! I knew he'd be catchin' the bad guys soon. Should I be surprised that most of them were French-Canadian, or "half-breeds"? Guess that was the 50s for you.
Another Canadian "cowboy equivalent" show was about Pierre Raddison (founder of the Hudson's Bay Co.) and his goofy sidekick "Gooseberries". (NO I'm not making this up!) Since a whole series on fur-trapping would be pretty dull they divvied up their time by "killin' a beaver" and then "catchin' a bad guy" (half-breeds again!) P.S. I'm so glad that someone answered the "Tarzan" thing. My mind was wandering in dangerous areas. |

When I was 5 my folks took me up to the William s Hart Ranch in Southern Cal, and Fritz was still alive. This was 1954 and Fritz was a very old horse, having appeared in the Silent Movies with Hart. It was love at first sight between me and Fritz. My Dad held me up to scratch his nose and after that Fritz watched my every move from the corral, neighing to me to come back. My parents had a hard time convincing me that we couldn't take Fritz home with us. Rick, I was a huge Sgt. Preston fan. Seems like they only used one set, the interior of a log cabin with a howling snowstorm outside. That was my image of Canada for years. Remember Sky King? My favorite episode was the one where he parachuted out of the Songbird to land on the cab of a runaway bus full of orphans. Don't remember if Sky had a horse, but he had a lovely niece named Penny and a ranch called The Flying Crown. |

Funny how things like that stick and 5 years of algebra are a meaningless blur. There was also a "headquarters set" where the good sergeant would talk on the phone to his mysterious superiors, before braving the blizzard again. In one of the most bizarre TV shows I've ever seen, the CBC brought the very young black and white Bob Dylan to the screen. He wandered back and forth through a log bunkhouse annoying a bunch of solemn loggers (who all wore checkered shirts and smoked intensely) with "chimes of Freedom, and "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands". Real loggers would have strung him up, or at least sent him to the cook house to wash dishes. |

Sgt. Preston was produced by the same folks who gave you the Lone Ranger, and used the same acting company. Preston)music at my library....now I NEED to hear it again. One of my most vivid memories from childhood is being taken to Radio City Music Hall by my aunt. The orchestra played "William Tell Overture" which was thrilling for me (who was adding "HI-HO Silver....Away" in my mind!!). I can still hear and feel how the music was making my seat vibrate. I had the pleasure of meeting Arkansas Slim Andrews and had him at our park several times to play his assortment of odd instruments and talk about his days in the "Toby" shows and his experience as Tex Ritter's sidekick. He was also a treasure of jokes. One of his best, he had just had $40 worth of groceries stolen from his car. He thought they were safe. He had them in the glove compartment. No one has yet mentioned Bobby Benson and the Bar-B something - possibly for good reason. I do not remember much about it except that he was a kid, or at least pretending to be one, and I was a kid, and I listened to it. |

His guardian and foreman was a guy named Tex. Often on their adventures Tex would take on the disguise of the Lemonade Kid...remember this was a kids' show so no booze allowed. At least that's how I recollect it, pard. I do not recall this show being on TV or the big screen, only radio and comic books. Another radio cowboy(?) was Straight Arrow who was a rancher named Steve somethingorother until an evil needed being made right. That was sponsored by N-A-B-I-S-C-O, Nabisco is the name to know. The tie-in with the sponsor was a series of outdoor survival lore the Indian way packaged as the dividers in the cereal box. These shows were on the air 50 years ago, so I guess that makes you really old, Arkie (or at least about my age).--John
