Friends:

I just got this message via the Folk-Legacy web page. Can any of you supply this fellow with the kind of information he wants?

Subject: country shows Date: Tue, 6 Apr 1999 21:57:46 -0300 From: "Denis Porto" To: "Folk-Legacy Records; Inc" CC:

Please, if possible send me country music gatherings happening from the 5th to 28th in May, not necessarily with top artists, I would like to see "real" singers, kind of family gatherings around southern West Virginia, Kentucky and southwestern Virginia. Planning to drive alone along these parts of the US, looking for real roots of folklore or typical country music. I like to listen to Hank Williams, Carter Family, not "modern" country singers.
Thank you all very much for everything!
Benedicto Wilson Felix Porto

I'll forward posts to this thread to him, or you can send suggestions to me privately, or direct to him at his e-mail address.

The Fiddler's Grove event in Union Grove NC might fit the bill...the old fashioned way would be to look in the storefront windows and see what's going on locally...I do this in Mississippi whenever I pass through...festivals are easy to find on the web if you do a search for southeast festivals...there is lots of bluegrass music in that area...Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine has a great list...harpgirl

Thanks, Harpgirl. I sent your suggestion to our Brazilian friend. Now, are there any more from the rest of you 'Cateers? Time's running short.

Hi Sandy

A plug for the old alma mater......Berea College is a center for arts, music, dance, and crafts in Kentucky. The school has a strong community committment to the Appalachian region and the preservation of it's history. It is tuition free with a work study program and 90% of the students come from 244 Appalachian counties.Truthfully, the place is getting a bit artsy-fartsy for my taste, but they still have many wonderful events.

MAY 14-16 the Appalachian Center of the College is doing their Celebration of Traditional Music. For the past few years, this has also been held in conjunction with the statewide show of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftspeople making for a great weekend in every way...a bit of something for everybody.

This may be a good weekend stop where they could hear alot, see a lot, and learn a lot while having a good time in a beautiful setting. Just a thought.

The town of Berea has a website at http://www.berea.com/index.html and the Berea College site is at http://www.berea.edu/.

They might want to check these out and I hope they have a good time here.

A few years ago, we spent a week in Circleville, W. VA at the Habitat for Humanity volunteer center. That week, Frank and I were the music that was happening, along with a great banjo player from the town who came over to pick a few with us. (Great, not in contrast to the banjo player in "Frank and I").

I'm told that lately they've been having square dances every week, with local people joining the volunteers for music and dance.

Also in Kentucky, at Clay City on the Red River, there is a huge bluegrass festival on May 7-8. This group has some type of event weekly, but the one on this date is one of their two BIG festivals.

After reading his message again I realize they may not be interested in Blue Grass, although it is truly American. But if they are interested in roots and folklore, I'd really recommend they stop at Berea.

Sorry Sandy if I push the place, but you can get a real flavor for the region there and the Traditional Music Fest is excellent.

Catspaw: I'm very familiar with Berea, and don't blame you for pushing it. Frank Proffitt's son Ronald went there, and after graduating, went on to get a PhD in Physics at Kentucky. We were all extremely proud of him; a wonderful young man. Then, on his way home, right after getting the degree, he was killed in an automobile accident. Heart-breaking!

George and Gerry Armstrong's daughter Jennifer also went there and is now making music and telling stories professionally, working out of the Boston area.

I'm going to forward your info about the Bluegrass Fest to the Brazilian dentist. He'd probably enjoy it, too, even if Bluegrass isn't his first love. It would certainly be an experience in Americana for him.

Using Hank Williams and the Carter Family type music as a guide, the following would be a good bet. May 2 Winchester, VA 540-662-3863 May 5-8 Rocky Mount, VA 540-489-1311 * dreama@cablenet-va.com May 8 Coaldale, W. VA 304-384-7484 May 13-15 Amelia, VA 804-561-3011 * May 14-15 Fairmount, W. Va 304-387-1103 May 27-29 Coeburn, VA 540-395-6318 May 28-29 Stuart, VA 540-694-7009 I attend 15-20 of these type of music fests each summer. I have been to these* several times and find they are among the best. mtntyme@blast.net

If you want to hear a great deal of the Carter Family Music and traditional music in general come to the Vandalia Gathering at the West Virginia State Capital Complex in Charleston WV May 28-30th. Some great pickers from all around meet there every year.

Thanks, folks. You've been a great help. I've forwarded all of your suggestions to Dr. Porto in Brazil (he's a dentist) and have invited him to take a look at the 'Cat.

We're not far from some of the ones listed above. Lot's of impromtu music here in Portsmouth Ohio area. Try the Lazy A, The Old Lantern, Eula's Pub or if you just want to play and sing call me. Tucker at 740 353 8660. There's more, just all that I can think of at 2:38 in the morning
