Subject: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 01 Aug 07 - 03:40 AM It's the first of August, school holidays are underway, half the office is in Malagar or Tenerife, the sky is cloudless and blue, it's time for a little snifter of something - after all, it's 5 o'clock somewhere! Sangria, sunburn and sand is optional, shades are compulsory, as are silly sunhats. Mine's rainbow striped. And for all you smokers out there, there's a brand new smoking room extension just for you, separated from the main tavern by this big sheet of lavendar scented glass with two way intercom so you can enjoy the music AND your tobacco habit. No lipstick drawings on the glass please, and no "amusing" suction games either... we've all seen 'Independance Day' and it wasn't that funny! So... who's got the olives? LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Cats Date: 01 Aug 07 - 05:17 AM And as I am holidaying in sunny UK this year [well at home really], I will be serving large jugs of cold Pimms and there will be Croquet on the lawn. Smoked Salmon Sandwiches will be available. To find us, just go through the back of the Mudcat Tavern and take the winding lane up the hill by the wood. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 01 Aug 07 - 09:14 AM Ooohhh.. croquet. I used to go out with a croquet champion, the game is a lot more violent than you'd think... mind you, so was he so I dumped him! White rum and tropical fruit juice please. Why's the rum always gone? LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: MMario Date: 01 Aug 07 - 09:19 AM I've got a big charcoal grill, a barbecue pit and a smoker going - couple of dodo's in the smoker and a full gross of passenger pigeons; I'm smoking them over a mix of apple and cherry; moistened with Calvados. The barbecue coals are ready, but I can't decide whether to do the iguanadon loin roast in the pit or slice it into medallions and grill them. What do you think? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: MMario Date: 01 Aug 07 - 04:28 PM t'heck with it. I decided to braise the iguanadon and make it into pulled meat sandwiches. The Passenger Pigeons are nicely smopked - I'm chilliing them down in the cooler - they will do nicely sliced very thinly. There's a pair of aurochs in the barbecue pit; But I decided to do them in the ground oven style - so we should be able to dig up the covering sometime about noonish tomorrow and feast. Grill is still going - lots of marinated veggies in the coolers next to it ready to go on. It's cook your own! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: ClaireBear Date: 01 Aug 07 - 04:47 PM I think that's a much wiser choice, now you've said it...I've tried both the medallion and loin roast methods, and neither is entirely satisfactory. Is the open-air pizza oven fired up yet? I have loads of dough made up -- and vats of sauce from my home-grown tomatoes, garlic and herbs bubbling merrily away -- for the do-it-yourself pizza bar. I am now getting ready to chop, grate, and slice toppings, but I'm not sure which ones to tackle first. Are there any requests? |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 01 Aug 07 - 10:55 PM JennyO comes in from the South Door and takes off a layer or two of warm clothing... Oh this is better - nice and warm. Good to get away from the Oz winter for a while. I have a few jars of lilli pilli jelly here that I made - it makes a lovely topping for icecream. We DO have icecream, don't we? Meanwhile, I'll just hang out at the bar with a turkey turd beer and wait for the Aurochs to be cooked. The marinated veges sound good too. Has the Squid found the jello pit yet? |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: SINSULL Date: 01 Aug 07 - 11:27 PM Air conditioning and fresh cherries. Thank you! I moved to Maine for the weather but I feel as if I am back in the NYC sauna. Chilled wine, preferably white. Oh hell. Make it champagne! Bert's card still works? Once I cool down I will be happy to help at the BBQ pit especially if that squid shows up. Calamari all 'round. |

I don't know how you stand being by that fire pit, but I'm glad you can. Whatever you have going there smells delish! Y'all care if I find a big soft chair with a stool to just sink into? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 02 Aug 07 - 12:55 AM Er.... Janie... that's not a big soft chair, that's the squid. He's vacationing out of the pit for a few days. Besides, the pit is full of Cllr. Don't even ask about the stool. Here, have this one by the window. The breeze is coming in off the aurochs and you can stare at Mmario's butt as he tends them. Frogprince - I'd not tried that combination before, but I suspect it may become a favourite. Does it have a name? Can I add white rum to it? Right.. now who's turn is it to get the duck out of the rafters? LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: GUEST,Sick Squid Date: 02 Aug 07 - 04:17 AM Squid saunters slowly in garbed in a Yellow Hawaiian shirt and Purple Hang Ten shorts, over one tentacle hangs a large beach towel and clasped in another is a sun lounger, two more drag a large and obviously heavy cooler box. He sets up the lounger by the jello pit and opening the cooler takes out a large bag of "Cap'n Ahab's Frozen Krill" which is printed with the legend "The NEW Snacking Sensation". From the depths of the box he produces a nicely chilled bottle of Chablis, pours himself a large glass, adjusts his shades and settles down to a lazy afternoon. Directly above him a duck sits in the rafters......... |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Amos Date: 02 Aug 07 - 09:22 PM (Wanders in from the Oher South Door). I ache all over from two weeks of strenuous physical labour, but it's done now. Repaired the waterfall, moved the bloody brickile to the back, dug the trench behind the hedgerow and put in sprinklers, ran pipes to valve and installed same; drilled through house wall to garage and routed valve control wire to timer box in garage. Distributed ten cubic feet of mulch, oiled the patio suncover, caulked and painted all trim around the house, and half a dozen other blood things -- oh, built a table for my music system and moved same thereto. I tell ya, I am at my wits; end to know what to do with myself now, so I thought I'd get snockered and act up a while. Quart of Guinness appears magically in hand to begin process. Thanks be to Bert's Credit Card. A |

No way! Not all Americans pollute their baking powder biscuits with gravy! That's a southern habit, primarily. I live in Texas now and fight off the gravy habit at restaurants regularly, but I grew up in the civilized Pacific Northwest where we don't eat nearly so much gravy and heavy cream and such. I make my biscuits with water, not milk. And we usually eat our biscuits with jam or butter. Squid, I have no intention of sitting on you. This dress smells bad enough from so much time on a horse. I was shanghaied by our Aussie friend here, along with Mom--she meant well, but neither of us is used to horses, so we're a little tuckered out. I think she forgot MOM and has gone to retreive her after a long nap. |

She's having another lie down. It was bloody FREEZING in Alice Springs. I'm tired, dirty and me bum's sore. I'll have some of those buttered biscuits if there are any left please. Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 09 Aug 07 - 06:06 AM Don't forget I've got this here lilly pilly jelly for the icecream. It makes a lovely syrup! In fact, I think I'll have some now. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 09 Aug 07 - 06:20 AM Liz, what happened to your little face? It's blank. You are one of the dreaded nameless GUESTS (shock horror!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: MBSLynne Date: 09 Aug 07 - 08:33 AM Yes please Jenny, I'll have some of the lilly pilly icecream. We used to have a lilly pilly bush in our front garden but I never found out what to do with them. I'll swap you some for the clotted cream and blackberries? Love Lynne |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Cats Date: 09 Aug 07 - 08:56 AM Try Kahlua and dark chocolate sauce on clotted cream ice cream. I do hope all this isn't raising my cholesterol too much. I'm off to have it checked this afternoon! Blackberries ~ yes please! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 09 Aug 07 - 09:01 AM Okay Lynne, sounds like a good swap. Clotted cream is another thing we don't seem to have here, and blackberries are yummy! |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: GUEST,Phot at work Date: 09 Aug 07 - 09:50 AM An indecently clean, blue Landrover Discovery appears through the heat haze............ Hi all! I heard there was Pimms, and clotted cream! I think I have a large basket of fresh blueberries in the back of the Disco, what say we whip them up with some cream?..................... I did manage to get to Sidders for Shanty night, but driving back from Mikes at half four in the morning was a bit of a sod, and what daft twit gave Jack a cutlass? It's going to be weeks before he stops trying to plunder off licence's, and pubs, not to mention brewery drays! Hold the Pimms, I've just found a bottle of fizz in the cooler, just put some ice cream into a tall glass.....Add a few blueberries......A generous amount of fizz, and bingo! Alcoholic ice cream sundae!! Yum! Wassail!! Chris. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 09 Aug 07 - 11:03 AM I rigged up my patio shower head out back (it's a regular shower head and hose unit that I attached to the garden hose and mounted high on one of the patio supports.) In case some of you haven't looked down at yourselves lately, you're all a sticky mess from that ice cream and syrup. The shower is one temperature--about 90-95 degrees (tepid in US Fahrenheit terms) because it's coming from the garden spigot. Feels great, though! |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 09 Aug 07 - 11:57 AM Just so long as we're only getting showered with tepid water! I haven't forgotten that duck in the rafters, you know. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Cats Date: 09 Aug 07 - 12:19 PM Phot ~ we'll have a Pimms session at Wareham. I'm taking the clotted cream down for the cream tea sing so I might just as well take the smoked salmon and Pimms as well. I did wave out of the window the other morning and I wondered where my cutlass had got to!! No Pimms for Jack! |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: MBSLynne Date: 09 Aug 07 - 01:51 PM Can you take all that stuff to Wareham next year too please? Shady has discovered it'd her 13th birthday on Wareham weekend and she wants to go to celebrate. Can I have one of those please Phot? Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Cats Date: 09 Aug 07 - 03:03 PM Yup. No probs. The new van has a full size fridge in it with quite a big freezer section and Hawker should be there too and hers has a big fridge with a big freezer section too! We'll have to have a Pimms Cream Tea!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: SINSULL Date: 09 Aug 07 - 11:44 PM Are the aurochs done? I would love some warm and juicy on a nice Kimmelweck. That squid still looks a bit "iffy". I hope no one plans on eating any. I wouldn't even get too near him. He might be contagious. Red Tide dyed or something. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 10 Aug 07 - 12:05 AM I had to look up Kimmelweck to see what it was. Goes to show you learn something new every day around here. Anyway, some juicy aurochs on it sounds good. I had some aurochs earlier, so I know they are ready. Ah yes, plenty left I see. Come to think of it, I'm getting hungry again too. Dare I say "I'll have what she's having"? |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 10 Aug 07 - 09:18 AM Here are some Yangtsee river dolphin steaks for the barbie. What, why has everyone gone quiet...I like mine rare...what did I say? RtS |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 10 Aug 07 - 09:26 AM I think we all went quiet for a while. Mudcat's been down for 5 or 6 hours. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 11 Aug 07 - 04:51 AM As people gradually got over the shock of seeing Yangtsee river dolphin steaks on the menu, JennyO poked her head out and said: "Anyone for more icecream and syrup? I don't mind getting messy all over again when I can step out and have another one of SRS's tepid showers afterwards." |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: frogprince Date: 11 Aug 07 - 09:14 AM Don't worry about it, Jenny. I've been a card-carrying naturist for about 30 years; a few hundred people have seen me taking a shower by now. : ) |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: MBSLynne Date: 11 Aug 07 - 10:51 AM Anyone like a dodo drumstick to go with the Yangtse River dolphin steaks? Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Cats Date: 12 Aug 07 - 06:26 AM Have you made your clotted cream ice cream yet, Lynne? We left a message for young son to make sure he brought you some back from Sidders. Meanwhile, for those chilly ecenings we will be looking for hot chocolate laced with rum and cinnamon. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 12 Aug 07 - 07:21 AM Mmm. That hot chocolate sounds good. Evenings are certainly chilly here still. Is there any about? |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: MBSLynne Date: 12 Aug 07 - 11:12 AM I made it today Cats, and we had it after our roast dinner, with a choice of blackberry or damson coulis. You're right, it's heavenly ice cream! And guess what? I've just found a recipe to make clotted cream. As some of you know, I have access to untreated jersey milk so I shall have a go and see what the ice-cream is like made from my own clotted cream! Btw, I used 3 tablespoons of maple syrup instead of honey or sugar. Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 Aug 07 - 12:28 PM I have only recently returned from forn parts (did wave as I was driven past the sign saying 55k from bfdk's house, she was in Sidmouth and didn't wave back), land of Aakavit and Lego - which oddly enough is more expensive in the land of its making than here in the UK.... Did I miss anything much? I know I missed my name off, because that was a posting from work and they don't like you signing up to things like this when you're supposed to be helping taxpayers part with money... Bring on the Moa steaks! LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 Aug 07 - 12:47 PM frogprince, if you're a card-carrying naturist, where do you carry your card? Make it a tall iced tea to go--I have to mow the back half of my back yard before it gets too hot. Then I'll be back for a shower (though modesty may dictate that I step under it fully-clothed so I can cool off as fast as possible, without heating up anything(one) else in the vacinity. . . ) |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 13 Aug 07 - 12:58 AM Well, it's nearly 6am here in the UK, the sky is blue and cloudless, except along the horizon where it's peach, rose and primrose. Looks like we could be in for a lovely day. Especially as I've just got *100*!!! Time for a morning pick-me-up of orange juice and something. Just wish the something wasn't cat fur. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 13 Aug 07 - 08:35 AM You're drinking cat fur, Liz? I would pre-fur not to myself. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: SINSULL Date: 13 Aug 07 - 09:18 AM Kimmelweck is a Polish hard roll with coarse salt on top usually served with copious amounts of pot roasted beef and horseradish. YUM! Standard pub food in Buffalo. A staple for students at SUNY Buffalo in the 60s until we found out it was horse meat - explains why it was so cheap. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: frogprince Date: 13 Aug 07 - 07:01 PM Now that I can finally get back on here, I can answer SRS's vital question. We really need the card only when we check into a resort, when we still got clothes on. If I have it with me after that, it's generally in my billfold in a light tote bag. :) |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: MBSLynne Date: 14 Aug 07 - 03:40 AM Yuk! No thanks Sins! There seems to be plenty of alcohol around even if the food is a bit slow in coming. We do have some smoked salmon sandwiches and ice cream. I think I'd rather survive on them....and the alcohol Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 14 Aug 07 - 06:59 AM SINSULL, the Aurochs were done days ago. Did you miss out? Very tasty too! Think I'll pass on the Maccas. Actually I heard mention of Moa steaks. I might have a Moa steak sandwich to go with my beer. Then if I'm still hungry after the first one, I'll have some Moa. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: MBSLynne Date: 14 Aug 07 - 08:08 AM Here you go Sins...sorry you missed out on the auroch but these dodo drumsticks are pretty good... Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: SINSULL Date: 14 Aug 07 - 12:12 PM None left????? DoDo drum sticks? I prefer white meat. HMMM - that duck is starting to look good. A liitle cracked corn, a net, a roasting pan - I think we're all set. Don't have a duck call. Anyone know how to get him down from the ceiling? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: MMario Date: 14 Aug 07 - 12:20 PM try putting out a bowl of custard. Sins - have you tried some of the cold sliced passenger pigeon? It's technically white meat, as most of the meat is from the breasts. But there should be some dodo breast around somewhere, unless the squid has been eating more then his share. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: SINSULL Date: 14 Aug 07 - 12:28 PM It's worse than that - he has splattered squid slime and lime Jell-O all over it. I'll pass on the auroch. But Passenger Pigeon sounds good. Thanks, Leo. That duck looks mean... |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Cats Date: 15 Aug 07 - 01:43 PM Still think I'll stick to smoked salmon, clotted cream ice cream and Pimms... |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 16 Aug 07 - 02:31 AM Ah that's better... been offline for a couple of days but we're back now; sort of. Pass me the Moa, it's big enough for 6 people to have the same leg, and the breast meat would keep even Spaw happy for a week! I had a happy find yesterday - turning out an old filing cabinet and trying to consolidate the piles of accumulated paper (for this read 'move from one file to another'), I found a pile of songs I thought I'd lost forever after transferring them to my songbook which was then stolen from our car (along with everthing else we had in the car, which, as we were on our way to spend a weekend with a friend, was quite considerable)! Sometimes it's good to be a squirrel! So I'm celebrating finding the orignial words to some songs I wrote at least 18 years ago, for once the beer is on me! (Note, I said beer singular. I've got a 4 pint tankard and a packet of drinking straws - knock yourselves out!) It's like finding a bunch of old friends at your door. Good to revisit after all this time, but I can't remember all the tunes now! LTS |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: JennyO Date: 16 Aug 07 - 09:31 AM There ya go Liz. There's always some Moa. I'll have a straw thanks. I could do with a beer right now (slurp, slurp - aaaahh). Wonder what everyone else is drinking ;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 17 Aug 07 - 02:20 AM And how are we paying for this giant bird? Moa money, moa money, moa money! LTS It's too early for a beer right now, but a long, cool glass of water would be good. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 17 Aug 07 - 03:53 PM yep. There's one four pinter, one two pinter, one two pinter glass and one whole bottle wineglass. Then there's the bucket under the stairs. LTS |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: SINSULL Date: 17 Aug 07 - 04:10 PM Oh dear - I didn't know that was for your beer. You may want to rinse that bucket a bit before refilling. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Summer Tavern open for business! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 18 Aug 07 - 02:38 AM Don't worry, the bucket is for afterwards... the beer's been . . . "recycled" then. So.... has anyone seen the duck recently? And who is that in the smoking parlour? LTS |
