Subject: BS: Pubs closing - landlord's fault? From: Folkiedave Date: 03 Aug 07 - 06:26 AM One of the threads here is about pubs closing. Now it is my belief that there are plenty of stories about landlords turning trade down. Let me give an example. I rang a pub to warn them in advance that two morris teams would like to turn up on a Monday in a week or so's time - and if it was OK, then they might like to make sure they could cope with an extra 40 or so customers. "Oh I don't know, says the landlady, you will want drinks and things (!!) and there will be all those extra glasses to wash and I might have to order extra beer................and on and on she went as I quietly put the telephone down. Here is another. Every two years we have a carol festival in Grenoside and on the Friday night beforehand we congregate in a pub there, Each year the landlord is warned to get plenty of extra real ale in and each year he/she promises this is done. And each year - they run out at least an hour and a half before closing time. And each year he has a pub full of people hardly drinking because all he has is smooth and lager. |

Subject: RE: BS: Pubsd closing - landlord's fault? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 03 Aug 07 - 09:53 AM Honestly, some people whinge about not having custom until you present them with custom and then they come over all 'but where will the regulars go?' LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Pubsd closing - landlord's fault? From: Peace Date: 03 Aug 07 - 12:40 PM The other side of that issue is this: When the visitors--soccer team, rugby team, non-regulars--have left, and the regulars feel they have been ignored because someone wanted to make a quick buck, what happens when the regulars go be regular somewhere else? |

Subject: RE: BS: Pubsd closing - landlord's fault? From: Peace Date: 03 Aug 07 - 01:14 PM Oh. Well, that makes sense, as long as they can go be regular somewhere. |

Subject: RE: BS: Pubsd closing - landlord's fault? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 03 Aug 07 - 03:34 PM In the main, folkiedave, yes! It is their fault. Sometimes though, when the landlord is manager, the brewey or pub chain will impose their will on him or her. Then it is their fault. I keep saying on the 'smoking' threads that the main reason pubs are closing is bad management - not the smoking ban or the supermarkets or any of the other reasons the bad managers choose. A very wise man called Bill Dermody, rest his soul, once told me thre is no such thing as bad beer. Just bad landlords. It is true. Well, apart from Watneys red barrel and brew XI. But that was as much real beer as Kraft cheese slices are real cheddar:-) Cheers Dave |

Subject: RE: BS: Pubsd closing - landlord's fault? From: Peace Date: 03 Aug 07 - 03:42 PM I hear what Dave is saying. The bullshit that gets spewed: "If this pub/bar/saloon/bingo hall/place becomes non-smokinhg, I'll never darken the doorway again." Yeah, right. Within a month people are darkening the door again. It looks like Canada may go completely non smoking except in one's car and in one's house. It's a completely unenforceable law, but it will have the effect of keeping secondhand smoke out of public areas, crowded streets, etc. I have no problem with it despite having been a smoker for 47 years. I do think some of it is chickenshit two-faced. Bust a guy for having a smoke while watching a diesel truck go by just belching out fumes, but we live in an imperfect world. Sometimes ya just have to suck it up deal with it. Now, if we could get a law passed restricting the use of Axe deodorant I would get on the nearest table and throw my g-string (if I had a g-string to throw if I had a table). But I don't think that'll happen anytime soon. That's my bitchin' for the day. |

Subject: RE: BS: Pubsd closing - landlord's fault? From: Folkiedave Date: 04 Aug 07 - 05:51 AM Well Les that could account for a lot!! I remember Brew XI coming to Sheffield. In no time at all they emptied the Stones's pubs and six months later there were signs up all over the city "Stones Bitter On Sale". Stones's Faytin Bitter as it was known locally. Best regards, Dave |
