Subject: Whitby Folk Week From: brassy sharman Date: 13 Aug 07 - 06:33 AM What are the best bits of WFW that should not be missed, best concert venue, pub, dance, concert, food, workshop etc with so much to do and such a wide distance from venue to venue planning what to do is always a headache. Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: Geoff the Duck Date: 15 Aug 07 - 03:24 PM She could try participating in the singarounds at either the Station or the Endeavour to show off what she does. A number of people involved with running folk clubs will also be found at either location. Make yourselves know an someone who does gigs. Quack! Geoff the Duck. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: brassy sharman Date: 16 Aug 07 - 07:27 AM See you all at the Endeavor then. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,padgett Date: 17 Aug 07 - 05:25 AM Right, so I might be showing me "faux pas" here but what DOES "Ossonflags" actually mean The Kings Suit syndrome Stands back with expected barrage from Les and Mick******!!! Booker hasnt been let loose since Holmfirth FF ~ he tried to take the Pub back on the bus I believe!! Ray |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: the button Date: 17 Aug 07 - 05:31 AM Ossonflags means, literally, "horse on the flagstones," used in the East Riding to mean, "Look out!" or "Look sharp." There's also a type of tubing known as "osscock," because it looks like... er... |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: Betsy Date: 17 Aug 07 - 06:09 AM To Banjiman, - you beat me to it - I was searching for this thread to give you some tips of where to go. For those who don't know - his wife Wendy Arrowsmith won the songwriters competition at Saltburn. I honestly have never met Wendy or Paul before, but if you get chance (M.C.'s) to put her on your concert / singaround - don't think twice. She's like a breath of fresh air . Wonderful voice and performer. Cheers Betsy. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 17 Aug 07 - 01:59 PM The fates have conspired against me. It was Julie's funeral today (from Eddie & Julie) and I have a gig on Tuesday. So theres a lt of my beer share for you lot to drink !!! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: Surreysinger Date: 17 Aug 07 - 03:02 PM Re Hiring Fair - when I made enquiries about it a few years ago, I was told that it was normally completely booked up around January! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: Banjiman Date: 19 Aug 07 - 04:17 PM Just a quick note for others for future reference. We phoned John the organiser of the Hiring Fair on Friday and he said that if we turned up today and one of the booked acts failed to show we could take a slot. We did, two of the acts didn't and we got a slot. Wendy will also try and get over to a couple of singarounds at The Station or Endeavour during the week (some of us have to work though......) Thanks for the above advice Paul |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: Tig Date: 26 Aug 07 - 02:23 PM And a big Thank You from all the Rugby Club campsite stewards for helping us to keep the site clean and tidy this year. We didn't have to award many 'Wally of the Week' awards to people for driving on the Rugby pitch when they had been told not to. It wasn't our ruling folks - it was the only way we were allowed to camp there! |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST Date: 30 Aug 07 - 10:02 AM Best thing at Whitby? Johnny Handle interviewing Louis Killen. They only got as far as 1954 and Louis is not even aware that what he is singing is folk music yet. I think its a conspiracy to ensure that they get booked for at least the next 2 years 2008 Louis Killen and the folk scene. 2009 Louis Killen in America. Ken Hall |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: Herga Kitty Date: 30 Aug 07 - 04:38 PM Ken - I thought that Johnny and Louis made it to 1956 or 7 (it was certainly after Louis had finished his apprenticeship as a cabinet maker and returned from Oxford's Catholic Worker's College, because we were left in absolutely no doubt about that by JH)! Absolute magic - Derek Schofield's interview with Vic and Viv Legg the previous Sunday was a treat, too. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: Soldier boy Date: 30 Aug 07 - 08:27 PM Good pics Collierlad! But I can't remember half of it. Less aspersions please mr Pagett, you know there is no truth to it. Well done to everyone for making it such a great week. Recovering now to build up strength for next year. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST Date: 31 Aug 07 - 11:51 AM Hi Kitty Ok 54, 56 57, Either way there is still a lot of ground to cover and I hope we get the chance to hear the rest of it. I would have indeed should have got to a lot more of the interviews but somehow I just cant put late night carousing and early morning starts together anymore. This ageing process is a sod. Ken Hall |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: r.padgett Date: 31 Aug 07 - 01:02 PM I do know soldier boy! dozy rosy is alovely girl and was there every time I looked round! poor old Cinders, you shall go to the ball! Ray |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: Tyke Date: 31 Aug 07 - 01:34 PM Now, now Ray stop trying to impress young girls with your Balls! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST Date: 01 Sep 07 - 06:38 AM Reading quickly through the pieces here I dont see anything about the Four Star trio thier first of hopefully many appearances at Whitby. They were superb. A treat to have such class musicians at the festival. Then in addition you get one of the very best comic song writers. Great stuff Ken Hall |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week From: GUEST,Northerner Date: 01 Sep 07 - 11:11 AM Good to see you most of you at Glaisdale. Sorry I was only able to fit in one trip to the Station Inn this year. I need to split myself in two so that both the storyteller and the singer can get full attention! Enjoyed Whitby though my legs are taking a time to recover from trudging up and down the West Cliff. Hopefully will have new songs when I come next year. Roll on Whitby 2008!!! |
