Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: GUEST,jj Date: 16 Jul 07 - 04:52 AM Where can i get a programme from? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: gnomad Date: 16 Jul 07 - 05:04 AM Whitby FF Site A quick scan didn't seem to mention programmes, but there are contact details. The programmes are usually on sale around the town by now, though I haven't yet seen one [been rather busy]. If you were to arrive without one the festival office would certainly be able to oblige, and so would many shops/pubs, as a rule. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: Surreysinger Date: 16 Jul 07 - 07:54 PM The festival newsletter came out at the end of last week - stating that programmes are available (if you've got your ticket) for 60p stamped addressed envelope A5ish size sent to the Whitby Festival office address - I'm pretty sure that there are instructions on the website of how to get hold of them. |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: John Routledge Date: 17 Jul 07 - 11:18 AM The latest newsletter gives the announcement of an ABBA ceilidh on an as yet undetermined night I think that the key is the reference to coming along in 70's/80s gear This seems to indicate an "ABBA" fancy dress ceilidh rather than an ABBA music ceilidh. I certainly hope so :0) |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: selby Date: 18 Jul 07 - 02:28 AM Me I wonder if the Abba thing will be before Shagpile on Wednesday night |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: Sue the Borderer Date: 18 Jul 07 - 05:11 AM There are two addresses for the festival on the web-site. To get the programme the one where you need to send your A5sae (60p) is PO Box 137, Queensbury, Bradford BD13 1WS I'm told it's not actually available yet. Don't forget to give your booking number, since the programme is only free to season ticket holders. Sue |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: Surreysinger Date: 18 Jul 07 - 05:31 AM I thought the newsletter which came out last week suggested otherwise Sue ... mind you I haven't re-read it yet to double check |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: Surreysinger Date: 18 Jul 07 - 05:05 PM Just checked the newsletter, and yes it does say "available now". |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: Sue the Borderer Date: 18 Jul 07 - 07:37 PM Hi Surreysinger I rang the Festival enquiries office about 5 mins before I wrote the post above. They said the prog wasn't available yet but to send the envelope in ready. Either they were a bit ahead of themselves when they printed the newsletter or the two offices aren't in contact. (The address I was told to use is the ticket office.) And, guest jj, it's hard to recommend things without knowing what sort of thing you're looking for. Sue |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: alanww Date: 31 Jul 07 - 12:57 PM Well, that's completely c*ck*d it up then! My solicitor has just told me that my house move, which had been planned for Wed 15 Aug and which might have meant that I could get to Whitby for at least a few days, has now been put back to Wed 22 Aug - right in the middle of Whitby Week. Oh b*gg*r! Please spare a thought for poor little old me doing my last minute packing, moving to my new abode and then unpacking everything while you are all having a great time! But don't spend too long at it, enjoy yourselves! I'll see you all in 2008! And that's a promise! "I thought I heard the old man say!" Alan |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: LesB Date: 01 Aug 07 - 02:24 PM Still no program arrived! The website declares that programs are now available. There is a downloadable prog on the website, which I havn't printed off (66 pages). First look & my initial reaction is 'Wot no George Garsides slow & easy sessions' and 'hells teeth! the N/W, Longsword, clog & Irish set dance workshops are all on at the same time'. It doesn't say where the events are either. Anyway i'm sure that the printed prog will arrive soon. (i hope) Cheers Les |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: GUEST,Ruston Hornsby Date: 03 Aug 07 - 07:40 AM George Garside will definitely be at Whitby - it may be worth checking melodeon.net as he usually posts there and it may give some indication of what he's doing as far as workshops are concerned. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: LesB Date: 03 Aug 07 - 10:55 AM George is doing his beginners workshops Mon -Thurs at 10am at the Stakesby Arms, (next to the camp site), and Slow n' Steady sessions in the graveyard spot (5pm) at the Middle Earth Sunday & Wednesday. Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: Mo the caller Date: 04 Aug 07 - 03:28 AM Got ours yesterday. The Irish set dance / American dance / Harmony singing all clash again GRRRRRR!!!! But I like the way they've displayed the workshop information. |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: GUEST,jj Date: 06 Aug 07 - 11:46 AM Which workshops would be most fun and interesting for a first timer? And the same question for which pubs and places to eat etc? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: Mitch the Bass Date: 06 Aug 07 - 03:32 PM I depends on what you're interested in. Dance, music, song? For me, I enjoy the Village Music workshops, English music sessions, concertina and melodeon events. I frequent Middle Earth for music, food and drink and luckily this year I have accommodation just a little further out on the same road. Say hello, I'm the bass player with Stradivarious. Mitch |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: GUEST,jj Date: 06 Aug 07 - 03:54 PM Sounds good - thank you I will say hello. Anywhere else worth drinking? I have had a look online and there seems to be so many places to choose from! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: LesB Date: 06 Aug 07 - 04:23 PM Most people at some time go in the Tap & Spile, sorry! The Station Inn as it's now called. The Elsinor is popular with the Liverpool & Southport crowd & lots of others, especially Wednesday Lunchtime when 'The Lunchtime Legends' (Nev Grundy, Clive Pownceby, Alison Younger, Chris Harvey) play 2hrs of Rock n' Roll. The Ship is good for Irish Sessions, The Endevour is popular for singing & lots of others, except Sam Smiths pubs, you will find no music or singing in them. I'm not too sure about food as my favorite resturaunt (Garriga's) has changed into an Italian & The Granby had changed hands last year & wasn't as good. In fact the best meal I had last year was in the Metropole, but I had to wait an hour to get it! & of course there is always fish & chips. As for workshops it depends on what you are interested in,most of the ritual dances are represented by cumulitive workshops, if you want to learn a melodeon then George Garsides beginners course is good, as are most, if not all of the beginners instuments workshops. If you have a degree of expertise in a given subject, then that is more variable, it depends on what you know & if it's at the right level for you. There are just so many. Have a good time. Cheers Les |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: John Routledge Date: 11 Aug 07 - 12:59 PM Into the final run in and I need a new mobile. Do any mobile networks not work well in Whitby Thanks |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: gnomad Date: 11 Aug 07 - 03:01 PM Mobile-wise things are much improved over a few years ago. All networks seem to get reasonable cover, though there are still a few blackspots, especially indoors. Used to be that Vodaphone was the only network with much of a service, but that is no longer the case. If you were in Staithes, however [just a few mile up the coast] I am given to understand that the only network worth a damn is Orange, and even they have big gaps. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: Mo the caller Date: 11 Aug 07 - 04:32 PM Guestjj, Have you bought a season ticket or are you looking for sings and sessions? Study the programme before you go, there's no time once you are there! Work out the things you MUST NOT MISS, (and hope they're not all at 11.30!), allow yourself plenty of time to get there and get a seat - it can take 20mins from one venue to another, if late you may not get in. Then fill in the gaps with things you'd like to go to, fish & chip workshops etc. And have a go at something new, I arrived in plenty of time for a session last year, and found myself with a set of pipes under my arm (I got dragged into a Morris set, the same way once). All part of the fun. There are some good concerts too, and dances. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: Mrs.Duck Date: 11 Aug 07 - 05:22 PM Not really possible to study the programme until you get there and buy one! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: GUEST,Brian Peters Date: 12 Aug 07 - 01:56 PM " ...if you want to learn a melodeon then George Garsides beginners course is good..." And if you joined George's crash course in a previous year and want to know what to do next, I will be running a "next step" melodeon workshop on Monday at 10 am in the Middle Earth (at least that's what it says here - I advise checking when you get there). You don't *have* to have been to George's course, it's really for anyone who's just got off the ground but still considers themselves a comparative beginner. |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: tijuanatime Date: 14 Aug 07 - 03:43 PM Where's the best place to head for on Friday night? We'd be more interested in singarounds than sessions |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: Herga Kitty Date: 14 Aug 07 - 03:52 PM Tijuanatime The festival doesn't officially start until Saturday, but I've found (or, more accurately, helped to start) singarounds in the formerly Tap and Spile now Station Inn and Endeavour on Friday nights in previous years. I'll be in Whitby on Friday so will be singing in either the Station Inn or the Endeavour. Or possibly both (at different times, on account of not being Hermione Grainger). Kitty |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 14 Aug 07 - 11:13 PM For those at Whitby this week... Watch for 2 ladies from Nova Scotia having a great time. Debbie Reeves is a blonde woman from Cape Bretoner who has a powerful voice as well as wonderful songs. Get her to sing some of her own songs, such as Joshua or Wreck of the Ann Amelia or the Family Choir. Bonnie is the dark haired one, knows all of the songs. They both are having a great time. Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007! From: LesB Date: 15 Aug 07 - 07:41 AM Anyone got any idea what state Stakesby camp site is in after this weeks rain? A couple or 3 years ago it was v wet & muddy, & cars weren't allowed to leave the site once on. Good news is that the school dinner ladies will be providing food again, very handy as you never get enough time between getting back from the afternoon events to eat & change before the evening concerts start. Cheers Les |

Just got the new album from the Unthank sisters & Winterset ['The Bairns'] so how were their concerts [ believe they were singing with their Dad at some point] How did it go |

Subject: RE: How's Whitby FF doing? From: nutty Date: 23 Aug 07 - 12:35 PM Got home in the early hours of the morning having stayed late to see the Unthank girls in concert. They just get better and better everytime I see them and I was there when Rachel sang her first song in public (one she pinched from her dad of course). In a hot crowded room they brought a freshness to the tradition that won the hearts of everyone there. The musicianship was superb, the interpretation refreshingly different and the clog dancing so professional that nobody could fail to realise just how long Rachel and Becky had been around the folk scene. Apologies to Tony Hall and Trio Threlfall but these 4 girls were the highlight of the concert for me. If you haven't yet seen them - you should. If there is a problem with numerous threads - perhaps Joe could merge them. |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 Aug 07 - 05:07 AM I enjoyed my couple of days there, in spite of the mist! Good sessions too, I especially enjoyed the Computer Song as sung by Lyn Heraud and Pat Turner at the Wednesday evening session at the Station Hotel. Hilarious song, and those girls just get better and better every time I hear them. Jack misbehaved at the Shirt and Shanty session in the Endeavour earlier too. Good luck with him Severn. Giok |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: Black Diamond Date: 24 Aug 07 - 05:50 AM I had a great time for the two days I could make it, last saturday and Sunday. Yes Banjoflower, it was a good session in The Elsinore Saturday night, thanks for posting about it earlier. Paul Scourfields and George Garsides "led" sessions on Sunday were as always great, though its a pity George cant have a bigger room than Middle Earth - its always so full and popular you have to fight for space. We managed to get in at the last minute on Moor and Coast campsite (it was friday before we knew we could definately go for the weekend) and we must pass on that you couldnt have had nicer stewards, the two blokes bent over backwards (not literallY!!) to sort us out, the campsite was flat, dry and quiet (well during the times we were there anyway, although I must admit we missed hearing the "goings on" during the latter part of the night that someone asked us if we had heard - we must have been asleep, shame!!! We met lots of old friends and made some new ones, and the whole Whitby experience was just great, as ever. Lin |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,buspassed Date: 24 Aug 07 - 11:39 AM In view of Eliza Carthy, Mike Waterson ,Lou Killen, the Elsdons, Spiers & Boden, Jim Causley and the Devils Interval etc. all appearing through the week it's nice to know the campsite was satisfactory! Thanks Nutty for the RU & W report, still to see them live though I think they're appearing in London next month so that could be a chance. Still in two minds about the new album, some of the ponderous piano does nothing for those distinctive voices. I do think, and I'm sure they would acknowledge the fact, their work owes a lot to that of the Waterson women , especially Lal. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: Pistachio Date: 25 Aug 07 - 09:38 AM I had a great day - when I eventually reached Whitby (2.5 hours)! Traffic and Bank Holiday road works (!!!) around Scarborough caused me and Linda to take a scenic landscape route around the hamlet of Silpho. Thank goodness Linda knew the area. Thank you Whitby. We made it to singarounds in The Station and Endeavour, met loads of happy smiling friends and obviously missed loads of others! Hope you all had as good a time. I brought the sunshine back from Spain specially for you - it will hopefully hang around for a while now! We enjoyed the concert up at the Met before heading home, later than planned - and in better time southbound (1.25 hours). Now to prepare for Hull Maritime Festival - Sea Fever 1 - 2 Sep! Hope to see some of you there. Hazel. |

A great combination of humour and political comment as you would also expect. It was wonderful to see them together. I had a great time at Whitby and two other highlights for me were Sam Lee singing a version of the Jew's Garden accompanied by Michael Wright on Jews harp (absolutely stunning!!) and meeting Lucinde who is marrying Graham Metcalf in September. They look so happy together and I wsh them bith well. Flyingcat (Moira) |

Highlights for me were... first choice, same as Moira ...Sam Lee and Michael Wright's version of The Jews Garden at the Football Club In the Tradition concert on Weds (??) - an absolutely stunning and intense performance, which took the breath away from audience, and (talking to both later in the week) from the performers as well ... the films in the Museum Lecture room (just as last year)..Finbar Wall's rendition of his "Gout" song, the Four Star Trio, and any and every of the In the Tradition concerts (but particularly the closing night one!!) It was interesting that many of their dance tunes were 'bog standard' session tunes, but worked so well.) Knotted Chord (with their 100+ reels, all very danceable) CHARM (separately and together) George Garside The dance callers - Geoff Cubbitt, Hilary Herbert, Barbara Kinsman, Colin Hume, Martyn Harvey (IAO, excellent and clear) Tom McConville & friends Damian and Shona (and the masterful way Damian shut up the chatterers at the Metropole Bar) Alastair Anderson and the Northumbrian evening. Oh, where can I stop?!!! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: vectis Date: 26 Aug 07 - 03:31 PM Totally kna*****d after a fairly laid back week (for me). Highlights were Georges slow sessions and Yes there should be more of them. Went into another session, which in past years was very good, only to find that everyone indulged in playing "my party piece that no-one else will know" boring, boring, boring. Even the person running the session looked totally pissed off after ther first hour. The Keep it in the Family concert on Thursday was excellent and made me realise how rare it is for a family to pass on their traditions. I really must go through Dad's recordings and books properly and ensure they can be passed on to the next generation. Sid Kipper was as funny as ever. The Moor and Coast wardens on the Community College site deserve a special mention in dispatches as they kept my hired mobility scooter charged up from their own generator in order to keep me mobile during the week. A huge Thank You boys. The Endeavour Maritime sessions were great fun and raised over £1300 for the lifeboat. The Station Inn sessions were subtly different, possibly due to the smoking ban, but run very well by Jude and Kitty. Looking forward to next year already when I hope the only "plastered" will be due to the drink and not broken bones. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: The Vulgar Boatman Date: 27 Aug 07 - 07:46 AM Funny you should mention that Vectis...as usual, a great week, but there's always a "but". This year's was a couple of sessions, one allegedly run by the bright young things who should have been taught better, and the other by an old and well-loved pro who should have known better. First the bright young things - with lots of their little friends playing very clever tunes and arrangements. They didn't address the room once during the session, not even to introduce themselves, and when someone else eventually had the temerity to contribute, reverted to their mobile phone text messaging and a discussion of what they were going to do after the festival. The grown up who appeared to be with them meanwhile got up during someone else's playing and started distributing leaflets and talking over the music. Thank God some of them left, presumably 'cos it was time for their afternoon nap, but everyone else in the room seemed at turns to be both bored and embarrassed. If they're looking to make a living, they need to learn better manners. Then the other one - a brief acknowledgement that there were other people in the room, including telling one punter that he shouldn't be there (probably a sense of humour clash)- and, again, an almost total disregard of the room, including getting up and standing talking on the fire escape when others started a set. Now maybe I'm a grouchy old sod, but there is a convention of good manners, (etiquette, even) in these matters which, when neglected really pisses me off. So if your idea of leading a session is basically to put down those around you, even accidentally, go away and learn to behave properly, then we can all enjoy your undoubted talents and enjoy ourselves at the same time. Ed Rennie and John Kirkpatrick could give you lessons if you speak nicely to them. And having got that off me chest, special thanks to the staff of the Fishermen's Rowing Club for their untiring good humour and warm welcome, and to all those who work so incredibly hard to make the whole thing happen. And if anyone's got the words to Maggie's outstandingly vulgar song about her lovely muff, let's all be having a look. At the words, that is...exit pursued by a bear... KYBTTS |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: nutty Date: 27 Aug 07 - 07:57 AM 'The Beautiful Muff' is a very old song. Copies of the broadside circa 1850 can be found in the Bodleian Museum collection - HERE Maggie does sing the song extremely well with just the right amount of pathos, so that you are not sure if the double-entendre is really intended. |

From: Tig Date: 27 Aug 07 - 11:26 AM A big Thank You from the Campsite Stewards to anyone staying on the Rugby Club campsite for helping us keep it clean and tidy this year - despite the strange loo arrangement :-) We only had to award a handful of Wally of the Week awards to those driving onto the Rugby pitch when asked not to. Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: Splott Man Date: 28 Aug 07 - 03:54 AM With over 600 events, with all the will in the world it's difficult to get to more than 35 in a week. What we did manage and enjoyed thoroughly were Mike Waterson & Louis Killen, for all the reasons mentioned before, and isn't it amazing how many songs MW has actually written!; the Nortumbrian Ceilidh, especially 422, and those young clog and rapper dancers who were immaculate. Con O'Driscoll (is that haow you spell it?) and his remarkable songsm especilally the lament for his dog's b****cks, it's amazing how many different rhymes and euphemisms he squeezed out of one (two?) subject. And the ABBA ceilidh!!! Sorry we missed you Giok, Emma and Severn, we must have been in the same vicinity together at some point. We missed the finale this year as we had an elsewhere first thing thing the next morning 200 miles west, but we did get there in time to see the tremendous Michael Marra for the first time when we got there. Here's to next year |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: treewind Date: 28 Aug 07 - 04:25 AM We had a lovely week. At the Con club, where something always goes wrong, this time I was missing an instrument (left it in the car) and had to play a tune set on the wrong melodeon but it worked out fine. CHARM had the best audience we've had yet. Thanks everybody who came along to support that, and all those who said nice things afterwards) The Dan Quinn all stars ceilidh was huge fun, and it was a bonus that the dancers enjoyed it too, and even said the band sounded good. Totally unrehearsed of course. And I'm slowly getting used to the idea that (at least some) people like the way we run tune workshops, as I've lost more sleep over that than anything else at recent festivals. Whitby is going to change next year, I'm told. This year's was the first without Malcolm Storey in charge, and the new organisers were learning how it works. They've got exciting ideas and plans - no, I wasn't told any details.... Anahata |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: Surreysinger Date: 28 Aug 07 - 05:34 AM I tend to worry when I hear people discussing "exciting ideas and plans". Whitby this year was by far my most enjoyable festival/event of the year. (In previous years it was always the National - sadly now in moribund state) Discussing it on the train on the way back home we were all agreed that it's relaxed atmosphere, and the intimate and informal venues were what made it the most enjoyable for us. I don't tend to enjoy the "concert" type of event, although I'm aware that there are many who do. As a singer, what made it really enjoyable for me was the opportunity to see traditional singers of the quality and sort that you wouldn't normally see at other large festivals, and to indulge in singing opportunities that they don't tend to support either. Hopefully they won't set about changing things too much - it would be a shame to lose it's flavour and charm. However, that said, the organising team are, as far as I'm aware, traditionally inclined, so I'll keep my fingers crossed and wait to see what happens ..... |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: CannieShieldsLaddie Date: 28 Aug 07 - 05:46 AM Quite agree Surreysinger, we thought it one of the best for a few years. Our 33rd Whitby and we did mostly concerts and particularly enjoyed Viv and Vic Legg, Grace Notes and The Wilsons. And when the Young Coppers arrived on Tuesday they gave the place a real lift. They were absolutely excellent and "keeping the family tradition up" as well as enjoying themselves at there first festival on their own. Not too much change needed. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,padgett Date: 28 Aug 07 - 06:20 AM The fringe still working well and some of the best singing around There needs to be outlets for all abilities and there are some excellent singers frequenting the fringe events The songs and singers continue to evolve which surely is what the living tradition is all about WFF week obviously needs to make a profit or cover its costs to exist, the folk community is very wide indeed and there are very many unsung heroes who work without due reward in mundane roles Stewards and organisers coffee makers programme sellers ticket/money collectors fetchers and carriers etc Folk singing dancing storytelling playing instruments is all about participation and people will gravitate to their own needs and aspirations Long may it be so at Whitby FF week Ray |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Aug 07 - 09:20 AM I had intended to leave the CHARM concert 30 minutes early to make sure I got a seat for George Garside. I couldn't tear myself away; 'leaving early' became 'gathering up my belongings and standing near the door in the last intro, sprinting out of the Met as the last chord died away, and running most of the way to Middle Earth' (which wasn't as crowded Wed as Sun, fortunately for me). |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,Neovo Date: 28 Aug 07 - 11:17 AM I agree with Vulgar Boatman's "but", but I'm afraid it's not just happening at Whitby. There seems to be a declining standard of behaviour in singarounds and sessions everywhere one goes at the moment. I do wonder about the merits of having an organised session with booked leader(s). I was particularly P*****d off by the guitarists who insist on trying to accompany solo unaccompanied singers by noodling around until they find a key or, more usually, driving the singer into a key they hadn't intended. Saw/heard this happen more than once. If somebody wants to sing unaccompanied let them do so. If they want accompaniment they will say - this is in the key of X, please join in. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,musician Date: 28 Aug 07 - 12:11 PM I thought sessions were about as many as possible joining in and enjoying playing/singing together rather than take your turn solo performances. Perhaps some distinction should be made between 'singarounds' and 'sessions' |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: r.padgett Date: 28 Aug 07 - 01:26 PM All this is pretty common ground and the etiquette and niggles will continue for ever Not just at Whitby, people need to learn some basic respect I fear! Ray |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,Neovo Date: 29 Aug 07 - 03:23 AM If it's a song then people can join in with voices and sing in the chorus. For a guitarist to try to identify the key by noodling and then plonking away with chords that don't fit if they don't know the song is very off-putting to the lead singer and anybody else who wants to join in with voice/harmony. Tunes are easier because you can usually identify the key straight away by where the melodeon playher has his/her fingers or the guitarists their capos and chord shapes. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,musician Date: 29 Aug 07 - 04:40 AM funny but some musicians feel exactly the same about off key singers 'joining in' in F and five eights or G and a quarter and trying to pull the musician off key. Personally I just like to see everybody enjoying themselves rather than just a few playing/singing at what they may consider to be some sort of concert standard and will happily try to adapt playing to any 'uninvited' (in a session!!!!!) singists. Or should we all be permenantly po faced and deadly serious?!! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,padgett Date: 29 Aug 07 - 05:11 AM I am some what annoyed musician Umaccompanied singers do not have to sing in your bloody standard keys necesarily! You make sure your guitars are tuned right and you play together nicely, ok Keep off unaccompanied singers, snigger all you want just don't try to join in! Ray |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,flutegirl Date: 29 Aug 07 - 05:13 AM GUEST musician Well said - there is real distinction between singaround and session - perhaps what distinguishes them is the element of 'performance'. In my experience, singaround is more about performance, with lots of 'shhushing' going on and applause given (and expected). A real session is more inclusive, yet without the element of performance (although the occasional rogue 'show-off' can pop up in a session!). The music is played primarily for those playing it, and applause is not common, certainly among the musicians. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,musician Date: 29 Aug 07 - 06:27 AM flutegirl you have hit the nail on the head some people are very serious and decidedly noninclusive as well as being unnecesarily abusive.Official Lead Sessions & singarounds may well have customs & practices as set out by the leader - spontaneous pub sessions/singarounds should be just that. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,padgett Date: 29 Aug 07 - 08:04 AM The music is played primarily for those playing it What a pity that you cannot understand that bystanders love to hear your music too and why shouldn't they applause? I cannot understand why musicians should really need to be totally exclusive. Sessions I have attended will often give way to singers However too music pub noise will put singers off key, if not accompanying themselves Why do musicians feel that they are not part of the social fabric which encompasses song? Ray |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: brassy sharman Date: 29 Aug 07 - 08:17 AM It is a strange phenomenon that as a singer if you attend a music session you will undoubtedly be ignored by the musicians (unless you are recognised), but if a musician goes into a singaround they will be welcomed and asked to play. Why is this? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: Surreysinger Date: 29 Aug 07 - 08:55 AM "I cannot understand why musicians should really need to be totally exclusive." Well said Ray! The best sessions I went to at Sidmouth were the traditional ones in the evenings in the Volunteer, hosted by Ken Langsbury and Roger Grimes. They consisted of a mixture of tunes _and_ songs by turn. The musicians in question were mostly singers as well, and therefore thankfully unaccompanied singing was just that, and everybody was duly appreciative of each others efforts - it was NOT performance, but a sharing... and a really enjoyable evening was had by all. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: brassy sharman Date: 29 Aug 07 - 09:13 AM Black Hawk , the point is that at a singaround you will be invited to contribute, at a music session the musicians will not even ask if you wish to contribute. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 29 Aug 07 - 10:27 AM Oh dear. I had to ask someone not to play a melodeon in a singaround at the Station the person was clearly singing an unaccompanied song and he insisted on playing along. If it's unnacompanied that's exactly what it says on the tin !! It's all down to courtesy and respect really. |

A singaround is usually where performers take it in turns to sing, play whatever. If they want others to join in they make it known otherwise others should sit back & listen. A session is where everyone joins in whatever is being played/sung. A singaround is usually good for spectators whereas a session is more for the participants. (but applause is appreciated.) Usually at a singaround everyone is asked in turn (by the 'leader') if they wish to contribute. At a session you just jump in when ready. Just my experience - may be different elsewhere. This is always the case in the weekly Whitby singarounds / sessions. |

Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How's it doing? From: John MacKenzie Date: 30 Aug 07 - 03:41 PM Can somebody ask Pat{?}who ran singarounds in the Station, where she got the chimneys and kids Tee Shirt. I HAVE to have one. Giok |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How'd it go? From: Herga Kitty Date: 30 Aug 07 - 04:16 PM Giok - the so many kids, so few chimneys t-shirt was worn by Judie Knight (who sometimes drops into Mudcat as Lady Aelfleda). Raggy - According to the Bedworth festival website, Neil Parker and Paul Watts have their own website, http://www.folkfax.net/locals/parkerw.htm, although I have to say that my attempt to access it just failed. I suggest you PM MalcBedworth or send an e-mail to mail@bedworth-festival.info (rather than Vectis' suggestion of Claire Penny, who is coping with Roger's illness and isn't a Catter, as far as I know). Parker and Watts have frequently appeared at Bedworth, and are booked again this year. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How'd it go? From: John MacKenzie Date: 30 Aug 07 - 04:18 PM Right, so it's Judie I want to contact then. Thanks Kitty Giok |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week 2007!/How'd it go? From: Herga Kitty Date: 30 Aug 07 - 04:31 PM Giok - MC Fat will probably be able to help with contact info for Judie. Vectis - I think you'll find that P&W are more West Midlands than Manchester! Very entertaining, and good harmonies, anyway! Kitty |
