Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 08 Sep 07 - 06:04 PM I'll be accused of self-promotion, I suppose, but I usually use a song I wrote, She'd Rather Make Coffee Than Love I see that in originally posting it to Mudcat I called it "I'd Rather" etc., but it has become "She'd rather". And sometimes I and others refer to it as "The Starbuck Song". In another posting, I'll give the link for my site at Motagator, where you can listen to it, as well as a few other songs I sing. Always a crowd-pleaser. And gives me an ego rush. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: GUEST,Arnie at work Date: 08 Sep 07 - 06:16 PM If I'm the last singer at a folk club, I usually end with 'All the Good Times are past and gone'. Probably not the best lyrics for a finishing song but it's a got a great chorus for the audience to belt out. I think everyone goes home happy if they've had a good sing-song at the end of the evening. |
Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: Leadbelly Date: 08 Sep 07 - 06:17 PM Thanks Dave, very nice lyrics! By the way, I did make a mistake. I meant closing songs instead of closure songs. Don't know whether it's the same. Manfred |
Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: MystMoonstruck Date: 08 Sep 07 - 07:02 PM The Parting Glass There's another, "Bring on the Starlight", but I weep embarraassingly when this is sung. "The Parting Glass" is safer. |
Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: Genie Date: 08 Sep 07 - 07:03 PM Depends a lot on the kind of program I'm doing and for what audience or group. "The Parting Glass" is pretty much always a good one, but sometimes "Show Me The Way To Go Home" fits better. ;) Others I sometimes use: Vaya Con Dios (en Español) So Long, It's Been Good To Know Ya Leaving Liverpool Po Tari Au (Now Is The Hour) Will The Circle Be Unbroken? I'll Be Seeing You (No, not all my gigs are for "folk" audiences.) At gigs for Jewish audiences, my standard closure song is a medley of "Havenu Shalom Aleichem," "Shalom Chaverim," and "Lo Yisa Goy." |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: GUEST Date: 09 Sep 07 - 01:41 PM Albert, Yes "Wild Mountian Thyme" was a favourite closing song as far back as the Adelphi Folk Club, Swansea in the mid-60's Since then it has been featured in The Afan Valley Folk Club, Port Talbot; The Swansea University Folk Club and The Colliers Folk Club, Neath. The Swansea Folk Club in the 70's also adopted it. I well remember Lynne Gent singing it at The Valley Folk Club. She has a wonderful voice which was admirably suited to such a beautiful song. Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: Genie Date: 09 Sep 07 - 04:10 PM It may be "worn out," but I still do use "Goodnight, Irene" sometimes too. It works really well when you want everyone to sing along. |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: Genie Date: 09 Sep 07 - 04:13 PM And, Uncle Dave, you know how Yogi Berra said, of a popular restaurant, "Nobody goes there any more - It's too crowded."? I think "So Long, It's Been Good to Know Ya!" is one of those songs that's "so overdone" that nobody sings it any more. ;-) I haven't heard it in years. |
Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: Genie Date: 09 Sep 07 - 04:44 PM Folks, one of the best "closing" songs ever was written and sung by our own Rick Fielding. It's a wonderful part of his legacy, and it's on the Mudcat CD Sampler: Violet - I think that's the one. You can find the lyrics and other liner notes here: When We Gather Once More - Rick Fielding You can, of course, hear Rick singing the song if you buy (hint, hint) the Mudcat CD Sampler(s). Genie |
Subject: RE: Favourite closure songs From: Genie Date: 09 Sep 07 - 05:44 PM Rick Fielding's "When We Gather Once More" is on the Mudcat CD Sampler: Violet along with a good (non-chorus) song by Jeri (Wings Of A Song) and a recording of Hard Times Come Again No More by Kim C. The Mudcat CD Sampler: Orchid> has some appropriate "closing songs" too: All The Good People - Sandy Paton If It Wasn't For The Song - Harvey Andrews Mingulay Boat Song Why We Sing - Jeri The Parting Glass - Big Mick with The Conklin Ceili Band and - for 'that' kind of closure: Sing With The Angels - Rick Fielding On the Mudcat CD Sampler: Plum we have Kendall Morse singing Gently Down The Stream Of Time - also a good one for "closure" beyond just the evening in question. Also "Last Letter Home" by Kim C (Kim Caudell). The has a couple that fit as closing/closure songs: This Time Again - Karen K Handful Of Songs - Jerry Rasmussen Harmony (One Out Of Many) - Jeanene Pratt The Song - Harvey Andrews (reprise) And on Mudcat CD Sampler: Rose there's a really good close-the-session song called "Fill One Room" by Midchuck. (Can you tell I'm pimping the Mudcat CD Samplers?) :-D |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: Gulliver Date: 09 Sep 07 - 10:03 PM We finish our Sunday afternoon session with "Wild Mountain Thyme", each member of the group singing a verse, and the Tuesday evening session with "Goodnight Irene", where everyone joins in. Otherwise I finish with an old-timey version of "Show me the way to go home" with extra verses. Not original, but the punters can all join in and go home feeling happy. I'm working on "Goodbye", from the White Horse Inn, just to have something different. Don |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: Dan Schatz Date: 10 Sep 07 - 10:32 AM I seem to have a penchant for writing songs that work best as the last song. This can be a challenge, since (a) there are lots of good traditional songs I love that work equally well and (b) not every song can be the last song. Two that generally close concerts with are May This Fire Warm You Well and A Song in the Darkness. But there are many others. Dan Schatz |
Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: George Papavgeris Date: 10 Sep 07 - 10:42 AM Depending on the mood, it can be any one of the following: The Ending of the Day (prayer-cum-love song) Miracle of Life (celebratory) Recessional (reflective love song) Bite of the Underdog (rant at the Powers that Be) Friends like These (in praise of the audience and other friends) Sound the Horn (end-of-shift farewell) |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: GUEST,Nighthawk Date: 10 Sep 07 - 12:47 PM When it's closing time at the night club, And the bar is shutting down; I know I'm s'posed to be packin' up, But I want to play one more song. The bartender has his evil eye On the queen of closing time, The waitress is counting her money, As she gulps her glass of wine. The audience knows it's over, But lingers a little too long. They're ready, drunk and able, To hear one last sing-along song. But, the manager's finger crosses his throat, And he gives me a beery shout, "Don't let that swingin' door Hit your ass as you head on out!" |

Subject: Lyr Add: POUR ME ANOTHER ONE (Geoff Rodgers) From: Leadbelly Date: 10 Sep 07 - 03:58 PM Here comes Geoff Rodgers's song (s.a.): Pour me another one the regular session at the local inspired this one So pour me another one fill up my glass, The night is still young and there's more to be sung Pour me another one let's make it last And let's sing it over again Each week in the corner of the local bar A few old pals with a couple of guitars Singing their songs for a couple of jars Let's do it over again They sing songs from the North and sing songs from the South Songs with a chorus that you learnt in your youth Songs that'll move you to open your mouth And sing with them over again They sing for the craic and they sing for the beer They sing for the people who come down to hear They sing to fill your heart with good cheer So sing them all over again They sing songs you knew when you were a lad Songs that you learnt from your mum or your dad Songs that are good and songs that are bad But they sing them all over again Now times getting on and the bar's long been shut Someone's still singing but he's almost half cut So finish your glasses and let's have you out Till we do it all over again Times come around the last song of the night All in together and let's give it some bite If you count yourself lucky maybe they might Sing it all over again Copyright © 2004 by Geoff Rodgers ~ All Rights Reserved |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 10 Sep 07 - 11:57 PM Goodnight Irene as a closing number was ruined for me over 40 years ago when Fenwick Fuller, a teacher at my school, used it as the closing number at all the dances we were required to go to. David Holt was trying to decide how to finish off a concert (or maybe what to play for an encore) at a concert I went to 20 years ago, and someone in the audience suggested Meeting Is Over. It was an excellent suggestion. |
Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 25 Jan 11 - 12:02 AM On conferring with some of my high school classmates, it appears I did a disservice to Fenwick Fuller in my previous message - the teacher in question was actually Kendall Bassett. |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: PoppaGator Date: 25 Jan 11 - 12:06 PM Dave Van Ronk's "Last Call": I haven't done it lately; it is a 20th century composition written in a very old-fashioned style that demands to be sung unaccompanied or not at all. The story is that Dave, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell were drinking together late into the night, and this song's lyrics were found in the morning in such nearly-indecipherable script writing that no one's handwriting could be recognized. The other two apparently let DVR have it; perhaps he wrote the melody (or "chose" it from the traditional airs in his memory bank). My usual closing number since August 2005 has been "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans." I worked up my arrancement while in Katrina exile, badly missing New Orleans myself at the time. |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: Crowhugger Date: 25 Jan 11 - 01:51 PM If a rowdy bunch, maybe "Irish Blessing" to mellow things a bit. If moderate energy or a laid back bunch, lately we close with "We Are Family" and we get the audience clapping. Most of our audiences tend to be of the latter two types because we do mainly retirement residence gigs. I think the lyrics in general and the reference in "We Are Family" to "...all my sisters..." works well for us on several levels: ~we're an all-women quartet; ~we have mostly female audiences, at least 10:1 in our RR gigs (both due to death rates by gender and, pardon the stereotyping, often the hockey/ball game starts at the same time as we do). ~our audiences have told us they identify with us: we remind them of their past singing days, very often with other women or family; ~our style uses constant eye contact with audience members while conveying the emotions behind the storylines of the songs, which creates a depth of contact that our audiences may miss sharing with their own family or close friends, so the words match our behaviour. Geez, after articulating all this at once, it reinforces why we enjoy this type of gig so much. |

Subject: RE: Favourite closure song From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 25 Jan 11 - 03:52 PM "Wild Mountain Thyme" Oh, it's decades since I sang that, it always brought tears to my eyes. Morris dance festivals end with "Jolly Green Garters" or "Fanny Frail", which are both super. |
Subject: Lyr Add: PARTING SONG (Dave Weber) From: Taconicus Date: 26 Jan 11 - 10:11 AM Mentioned by Tim above, my favorite closing song is Parting Song, composed by Dave Weber in 1993 in memory of John Purdy of Torquay. Soon the morning sun will rise and dawn will bathe the sky,The melody is very beautiful, and the only recording of it I know of (aside from the YouTube video Tim linked to) is on Old Songs & Bothy Ballads (Fifesing 4) - Nick-knack on the Waa, a CD of traditional folk songs. This album also has one of my favorite (and largely unknown) traditional Scottish songs The Gallant Forty Twa (not the more famous song of the same name). |
