One other thing:

I wouldn't miss MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat). It's not that I have anything against the MREs themselves. They're actually pretty good. Not like home cooking or anything, but they put a lot of the canned and frozen heat-and-eat stuff at the grocery store to shame.

The reason I wouldn't miss MREs is that the only time we civilians get them is when hurricanes come around and blow everything down. Then the Gubmint is nice enough to give us MREs so we don't starve 'til the power company puts all the poles and lines back up so we can go back to deep frying armadillos.

What I'm getting at is: No MREs=No hurricanes.

I will gladly sacrifice the one if it means none of the other.

Sugarless gum.
Sugar substitutes. (I bet they're worse for you than the sugar!)
Fat-free cold cuts.
Make that fat-free anything. If they've taken the fat out, they've probably rendered whatever is left into something virtually undigestible.

"is the fog the reason that you're posting here instead of out taking photos"

You got that right Rags. The fog lifted by noon and it turned out to be an exceptional sunny autumn day.

Now that is something I would miss if it was gone .... blue sunny skies and a blue ocean along a rugged coastline.

Comedians (and other media personalities who try to be funny) who make "gay" jokes (i.e, it's supposed to be hilarious to suggest that someone might be "gay").

That, and the same lot who think they're terribly clever whenever they make a pun on someone's name (unless it's a very fitting pun).

Get rid of sodapop?
Nowadays everybody asks for name-brand drinks- get rid of Gatorade, I say!

Traveling with my parents when I was young, no air conditioning in the car, and a water bag hung on the car hood, nothing was more welcome than a stop at a gas station that had a zinc-lined container filled with ice (mostly icy water) and sodapop. Therein I found my favorite, a purplish drink called Delaware Punch- the drink of the Gods, I thought then.

I would cool my hands in the icy water (everyone did, no thought of germs) and slowly become alive again.

Disappointment bloomed if the Delaware Punch was sold out, but I would console myself with a root beer (real sassafras back then) or even a NeHi.

I remember this youth hostelling trip I took in Germany once and at least half the hostel meals consisted of a bowl of pea soup with a sausage in it. But of course I wouldn't dream of judging German cuisine from that experience.

If your society had the wisdom to set aside some modest yearly budget funds for public TV, RangerSteve, you wouldn't have to put up with those pestiferous fundraising drives...(which I agree are very annoying)

But I know. It's far more important to build a lot more cruise missiles and attack helicopters and stuff like that, right?

Speaking of those damn car commercials...we have a big fat loudmouth car dealer here named Paul Sadlon who used to scream "I WILL NOT BE UNDERSOLD BYYYYYY ANYBODYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!" on his radio ads. Another great reason to turn the radio off when in the Barrie, Ontario region.

Nouvelle cuisine, especially the kind that involves applying the sauce with an eye dropper. I want sauce, damn it!!!

TV cooking shows where they start with a recipe that seems easy enough, then introduce an ingredient that you, personally, can't obtain, like a fruit that you never heard of, but they assure you that you can find it in any Uzbekistani food store, or camel cheese (available in the Algerian section of any grocery store). Where do these people live? Apparently not in the real world.

Dunkin Donuts - since, as I get older, my tolerance for sugar coated sugar has gone way down. Bring back plain donuts.

Canned peas
canned stringbeans.
canned carrots
the crap that comes out of Nashville under the name of "Country Music"

Public TV fund raising, which comes around every two months.

Self-help shows, which preempt regular programming on Public TV during fund raising.

REALLY LOUD OBNOXIOUS COMMERCIALS FOR CAR DEALERS ON THE RADIO!!!!!

Really conservative or really liberal thinking.

Out of control political correctness.

I agree with some of the other entries, but not Waffle House. Some states don't have them. The nearest one to me is about 50 miles away.

Starbucks is ensconced in my supermarket; the carts have a caddy for the coffee containers, so one can charge up while perusing the persimmons. Besides, I like their bearclaws. Ownership is in Seattle, also in the Pacific Northwest, what's wrong with that?

(There are others I visit when near them; Second Cup is as good except their bean selection is limited).

Things I WOULD miss:

Literature and BOOKS
Wally World (yea, the dollar talks here)
REAL grocery stores that carry stuff like chipotle powder and tahini
Cigarettes (yea, I know that is a baddie so don't yell, OK)
Dogs
Cats
Computer and Internet esp. MUDCAT!
Showers and toilets with water pressure and flush/sewer capabilities
HOT water on demand
Warm houses and beds
Some sort of health care other than Witch Doctors (aka ME!)
Antibiotics
If I have fruit/grain and sugar, I can always make my own booze.
