I'm not sure about television, but some of the gala ceremony might be heard on the radio - Shelagh Rogers (CBC) along with the smiling -stepdancing - singing - Benoit Bourque, will be presiding in both official languages.

There will be performances by Ron Hynes, Vishten, Ian Tamblyn, Florent Volent, Galitcha, Sylvia Tyson, The Duhks and T. Nile. And there will be food, too. Which wouldn't sound so good on the radio.

The cost is a little steep for me, Ad, and I'm a little short on neckties.

As far as TV is concerned, Saturday night on CBC is Hockey Night In Canada - though it may be shown at a later date.

Doesn't he have jumper cables for his car? Don't all Canadians?

Tell him to loop them around his neck and tie them like a tie. Then they'll let him in as long as he promises not to start anything.

Nyuck, nyuck.

Joseph, there's no need to shout, please. If indeed you mean Donal O'Shaughnessy, I believe he is not from Canada but rather south of the border, so would not qualify for the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

"The criteria for Eligibility:
Canadian artists who have released recordings between July 1, 2006 and June 30, 2007 are eligible to submit their work for the 2007 "Canadian Folk Music Awards. Artist eligibility criteria applies to all categories. Canadian artists, for the purposes of this competition, are defined as follows:

"1) A Canadian citizen or;

"2) A landed immigrant or;

"3) A person who has resided in Canada for two years (including the eligibility period).

"4) In the case of group submissions, at least 50% of group members must fulfill one of the above definitions of 'Canadian artist.'

"The judging process is similar to that of the two-stage elimination model used by the Junos via a randomly selected jury drawn from our community." CFMA.ca website.

The names on the nominations list are the result of a time-consuming pre-judging process which has narrowed sometimes 70 or so entries in a single category down to 5 finalists in a specific category.

I hope that helps to make things a bit clearer. If it feels necessary to list those who "should" be on the list and aren't, perhaps someone would like to begin another thread for that purpose.

Thanks Arnie so much! Does that mean you'll be at the CFMAs too (and with Kathy? I thought Kathy had something else on that weekend)?

Russ - did you see that Chris Coole is in 2 categories on the list(no doubt you did). Gotta love those banjo guys. They keep us humble - just kidding! I meant proud!!!

Here's the latest information about the CFMA's - now less than one week away! TICKETS / RADIO / FLIGHTS etc.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that the Canadian Folk Music Awards ceremony is happening a week today, Saturday Dec. 1st, in the majestic Grand Hall of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. If you haven't already reserved tickets, you can do so by calling 1-800-385-FOLK. (Or if you're in Ottawa , call 613-730-2887.)
Tickets are just $40, and that includes a catered reception after the show.
Also, if you haven't booked your plane ticket yet, I see that WestJet still has seat sale tickets to Ottawa from Vancouver and Calgary for $179-$189 each way. It's not too late! h
Folk Awards celebrate Canada 's many musical traditions…and the innovative artists who build on them!
The Canadian Folk Music Awards Ceremony Saturday, December 1st, 7 pm, at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau QC
National CBC Radio Two broadcast of the ceremony December 7th, 8:00 pm (8:30 in Newfoundland ) on Canada Live with Ottawa host, Alan Neal
            Canada 's incredibly vibrant and diverse folk scene will take centre stage December 1st at the third annual Canadian Folk Music Awards ceremony in Gatineau , Quebec .
           The show features performances by Canadian Music Hall of Fame member Sylvia Tyson, Grammy-nominated acoustic ensemble The Duhks, Juno and Felix award-winning ex-Kashtin member Florent Vollant, Juno-winner Ian Tamblyn and Newfoundland legend Ron Hynes. The line-up is rounded out by last year's CFMA Best New/Emerging Artist winner T. Nile, up-and-coming Acadian ensemble Vishten and Indian world fusion ensemble Galitcha.
            This year's ceremony will be hosted in English and French by Shelagh Rogers of CBC Radio One's Sounds Like Canada and Benoit Bourque, the Juno Award-winning Quebecois musician known for his work with groups like Ad Vielle Que Pourra and Le Vent du Nord.   It will be broadcast nationally December 7th on CBC Radio Two's Canada Live.
            Selected from a pool of over 400 submissions, the 79 nominees for this year's CFMAs exemplify the richness, diversity and innovation found in Canada 's folk music communities.  Among them are well-known names like Order of Canada officer Bruce Cockburn, acclaimed pop artist and David Bowie band alumnus Emm Gryner, Juno-winning Cuban music innovator AlexCuba, and Quebec traditional music favourites Les Charbonniers de l'Enfer. New discoveries include 18-year-old Kyrie Kristmanson, an artist of Veda Hille-like originality who's rumoured to play at least one song on manual typewriter. There's also Brian Thomas, a Celtic music virtuoso of the hammered dulcimer; and Jon Brooks, a singer-songwriter with a voice reminiscent of Steve Earle and an album of songs about the Canadian war experience.
            Launched in Ottawa in 2005, the Canadian Folk Music Awards recognize Canada 's outstanding writers, producers and performers of traditional music and the artists who are expanding the genres in innovative and exciting ways. While the Junos celebrate Canada 's popular music success stories, the CFMAs honour the magnificent diversity of Canada 's musical heritage – from the musical traditions of Aboriginal Canada to Celtic, Acadian and traditional Quebecois styles; singer-songwriter music, blues, bluegrass and old-tyme country; and the myriad of global traditions brought to Canada by each new wave of immigration.  The CFMAs provide an opportunity to draw Canadians' attention to our most outstanding and often underexposed roots and world artists.
            CFMAs will be awarded this year in 18 categories, including "Best Album – Traditional" and "Best Album – Contemporary," "Young Performer of the Year" and "Pushing the Boundaries."
            Like the Junos, the Canadian Folk Music Awards are judged by independent juries of industry experts, a separate jury for each category, and the results are tabulated by an independent chartered accountant.
Thanks Peace. But I TRULY am happy just to be a nominee. TRULY. I spent over 15 years as a teacher working with small classes of young children and their grownups. This was never in my game plan and is beyond my craziest dreams. What fun it will be to see and hear so many wonderful performers there - and to enjoy the show!
Oh Canada!
Beer,
If you don't need to stay at the "official" hotel, there are much cheaper deals to be had at places that are 15-20 minutes away.
The official hotel is totally booked. The problem for me is that it is not so much the actual awards that is important(because I look for possible acts for our festival), but the networking that takes place afterword's. I may sound off beat on this but it is true. I wanted to meet Black Walnut and to chat with Ron Hynes again but maybe some other time.
The show will be over around 10-11.
Parking expenses,driving to where ever afterwords (Bobad has offered but that is at least an hour away). So I think I'll just drive up to see Bobad instead and talk about Bruce's up coming show.
That's correct, C.Ham:
Saturday December 1: The Canadian Folk Music Awards Ceremony Saturday, December 1st, 7 pm, at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau QC (includes concert and catered nibblies)
Friday December 7: National CBC Radio Two broadcast of the ceremony December 7th, 8:00 pm (8:30 in Newfoundland ) on Canada Live with Ottawa host, Alan Neal
My understanding is that every other year it will be held at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and the years in between in another province. At least this year we in Ontario don't have to pay for flights.
Hello from Ottawa! This is black walnut speaking, from my husband's laptop, high up in the hotel right across from the Canadian Museum of Civilization.
Yesterday we drove through one of the worst snowsqualls I've ever driven in (and being Canadian that means something). I was at the wheel and made my way through the truck tracks ahead of me. A couple of vans passed me, and we saw them a bit later in the ditch.
Celebration is in the air...the folkies are gathering....at least we have fun trying to guess who are the folkies vs. who are not - some I recognize from groups, festivals, OCFF, clubs, etc.
Not sure when I'll be back here, but I will eventually come back and report on the night's unfoldings.
Thanks all. It was a fabulous evening in a stunningly gorgeous setting - The Museum of Civilization in Hull. The awards ceremony included live music between the announcing and receiving of awards. It was fun to finally meet my webmaster who lives in Quebec, as well as a lot of folk friends and heros from across this very large country. So much talent and soul in one place - it was very inspiring!
My favourite of the night was the award given to Anne Lindsay + Oliver Schroer for Producer of the Year. Ollie is battling leukemia here in Toronto. He is one of the most intelligent, gifted and entertaining fiddle players this world has ever produced. We all wished he could have been there in person to accept it.
I'm going to quote Bill Garrett, one of the CFMA organizers. This from Maplepost:
"Thanks for the kind words but I must point out that everyone on the CFMA board - Jean Hewson - St. John's, NF Carole Pigeon - Vercheres, QC, Arthur Mc Gregor, Ottawa, Paddy Tutty, Saskatoon, SK, Roddy Campbell, Edmonton AB, Raynald Ouellet Montmagny, QC and Susan Clement in our Ottawa office puts in an astounding amount of work.
Also many thanks to the excellent crew at the Museum of Civilization and CBC Radio. which will air the Awards this Friday on Radio 2's "Canada Live" Next year we'll be in St. John's Newfoundland.
Won't that be a party!
One thing I found strange was Les Charbonniers de l'enfer, an a cappella group, winning Best Ensemble without even being among the nominees for Best Vocal Group.
These awards are a really good excuse for the professional Canadian Folk Music community to feel proud of their accomplishments and all the nominees were well deserving of that in my opinion. It's a great incestuous folkie party. Unfortunately in a contest only one person wins - that's the way they do it. I think they should change it to the 3 best recordings of the year in each category- and then the press coverage would be so much better for more great recordings and artists that most people aren't even aware of.
Debbie Carroll's Simply Beautiful should have been in there (in my biased opinion) and so should have my buddies Erynn Marshall & Chris Coole. Only the winners will get to flog their winnings with obnoxious marketing propaganda- the music biz is so much fun!
What's really good to know Debbie, is that whoever gets your recording in their homes for the benefit of their children will be so much richer because of it, and I know your cd will make it's way in the world just fine regardless of any awards. You have created a very fine project and I congratulate you- many people will realize this, and we are very proud to have you on the Merriweather Record Label.
Thank you so much Arnie, and Peace, and JohnB, and Beer, and Kat....
someone said to me during the reception that children's music could be quite easily divided into many categories. I agree with him. The final selections in the children's music category were diverse. The same happens in the other categories as well.
A word about judging. Last year I was one of the judges for the CFMAs. I gather that some people think that judges talk with one another and make their decisions in a group setting, full of politics and rumblings - let me tell you that in the case of the CFMAs it is certainly not the case. For the 2006 awards, I was judging for one category only, and I had no idea who the other judges were for that category or any other one. I listened carefully for skill, passion and for the core of the music - folk. I was sworn to secrecy about my role before the awards, and I didn't know until the night of the awards who had won in the category for which I was judging. The judges commit a lot of time and energy behind the scenes, and are drawn from the community across the country. I can't begin to even imagine organizing such a thing.
I was honestly thrilled to be nominated for a CFMA, but awards, thankfully, are not the only feedback we get. Last week my friend Bob and I did a concert for over 100 2 year olds and their grownups at a big library in North York. 2 year olds give the best feedback. It was a wonderful time!
