Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 14 Apr 08 - 05:07 PM No problemo Joseph de Culver City. And I now it's my turn to thank you for introducing me to The Fairfield Four. After watching that video you alerted us to, I found another video of that group performing "Po' Lazarus". I hadn't heard of that song until I started coming to Mudcat and even then I'd heard of that song, but never heard it sung. I was very impressed with The Fairfield Four's performance of "Po Lazarus". And that video inspired me to start a whole 'nother category thread. Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Muttley Date: 14 Apr 08 - 05:45 AM Hi Azizi - haven't heard from you in a long while on the PM circuit - I've been in "nocomputerland" for ages and only recently got back to the Mudcat a few weeks ago. I have a few offerings for you on this score (no pun intended) - sorry. I have toi agree with Slag and Little Hawk who nominated 'Amazing Grace': I think not only is the tune spectacularly powerful - but singing its words to the tune of House of the Rising Sun and placing the emphasis on "Grace's" lyrics where they would go on "Rising Sun's" - jus tshows how versatile and powerful this song really is. Add to that the fact that the writer, John Newton was the captain of a slave ship for many years before he found God and became a minister and you have a song which is powerful as well as the story of the lyricists life. My own epiphany moment with Amazing Grace came in the Scottish Highlands when we pulled over one drizzling, windy, freezing morning (just another beautiful Summer's day in the highlands of Western Scotland) into a lookout carpark above Loch Tulla. There was a chap in full 'Cameron Highlander' regalia busking by playing the pipes. As I walked over to film him he segue'd from whatever tune he was doing and into Amazing Grace: I stood there filming with tears running unashamedly down my face and sobbing (you can hear me on the film). However, the other two songs I love and which speak to me are: I LOOKED UP I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-coming I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-coming Down the road A - le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here A- le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-crying I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-crying For my sins A - le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here A- le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-dying I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-dying On the cross A - le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here A- le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-rising I looked up - - - - and I saw my Lord a-rising From the tomb A - le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here A- le - lujah He is coming A - le - lujah He is here The third song is: MARY DID YOU KNOW Mary, did you know that your baby boy will one day walk on water? Mary, did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters? Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new? This child that you've delivered Will soon deliver you Mary, did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man? Mary, did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand? Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod? And when you kiss your little baby You've kissed the face of god Mary, did you know? Oh, Mary, did you know? The blind will see.The deaf will hear. And the dead will live again, The lame will leap. The dumb will speak The praises of the lamb. Mary, did you know that your baby boy is lord of all creation? Mary, did you know That your baby boy will one day rules the nations? Did you know That your baby boy is heavens perfect lamb? This sleeping child youre holding; Is the great I am Reba McEntire does a beautiful version but the absolute best I have heard is duet sung by Kenny Rogers and I forget the female partner - a black soul / gospel singer I think. Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: eddie1 Date: 14 Apr 08 - 02:45 AM Life is funny sometimes. This afternoon I'm going to a funeral of a friend who went overnight from being fit, healthy and enjoying everything in life to being practically unable to speak and being confined to a wheelchair and unable to do anything for himself. This was due to a brain haemmorrage. He spent a year when his speech did get a little better during which time he told me often how much he wished it was all over. Last week he got his wish. Today I found this thread and it's helped me get my thoughts into some kind of perspective. I've no idea what songs/hymns we'll hear today but I'll have a lot to listen to inside. I guess the main one for me is "I Bid You Goodnight" which The Greatful Dead sang. When I have more time I'll find a Blue Clicky for it. Thanks Mudcat. Eddie |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 13 Apr 08 - 09:27 AM One of my memories of Sunday morning when I was a child was my mother turning on a gospel music radio station so we could hear that music as we got ready to go to church. The song "Victory Is Mine" was the theme song for one of those radio shows, and for some reason, it's the only song that I associate with my memories of those Sunday morning shows. One reason why I remember this song may be that it was repeated every Sunday-since it was that radio show's theme song-and it was sung with much more "enthusiasm" {for want of a better word} than my church choirs usually sang. I've found two YouTube videos of that song. The first one I'll post isn't the same but is closest to my memories of how that radio choir from my childhood sang that song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuRQ1zaRHRI&feature=related ** Here's another link to a rendition of that song. This one is sung by Dorothy Norwood Singers, a choir that is very well regarded in gospel music circles: Dorothy Norwood- "Victory Is Mine" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L50l9wNXS0M Alcorn Gospel Choir-"Victory Today Is Mine" |

Fillmore, Sr., pub.1911] Joys are flowing like a river, Since the Comforter has come; He abides with us forever, Makes the trusting heart His home. Refrain: Blessed quietness, holy quietness, Blest assurance in my soul! On the stormy sea Jesus speaks to me, And the billows cease to roll. Everything is turned to gladness, All around this glorious Guest; Banished unbelief and sadness, All is perfect peace and rest. Like the rain that falls from heaven, Like the sunlight from the sky, So the Holy Spirit given, Falls upon us from on high. What a wonderful salvation, Where we always see His face! What a peaceful habitation! What a quiet resting-place! Verse 1: Humbly, I ask Thee to teach me Your will, while You are working, help me be still, Satan is busy, but my God is real; order my steps in Your word, please, order my steps in Your word. Verse 2: Briddle my tongue let my words edify, let the words of my mouth be exceptable in Thy sight, take charge of my thoughts both day and night; please order my steps in Your word, please order my steps in Your word. Bridge: I want to walk worthy, my calling to fulfill. Please order my steps Lord, and I'll do Your blessed will. Subject: Lyr Add: FAR SIDE BANKS OF JORDAN (Johnny Cash) From: Bert Date: 23 Nov 07 - 01:34 PM This is more of a love song but it is religious. FAR SIDE BANKS OF JORDAN As recorded by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash on "The Legend" (2005) I believe my steps are growin' wearier each day. Still, I got another journey on my mind. Lures of this old world have ceased to make me want to stay, And my one regret is leavin' you behind. But if it proves to be his will that I am first to cross, And somehow I've a feelin' it will be, When it comes your time to travel, likewise don't feel lost, For I will be the first one that you'll see. CHORUS: And I'll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan. I'll be sitting drawing pictures in the sand, And when I see you coming, I will rise up with a shout, And come running through the shallow water reaching for your hand. Through this life, we labor hard to earn our meager fare. It's brought us trembling hands and failing eyes. So I'll just rest here on this shore and turn my eyes away Until you come, then we'll see paradise. CHORUS TWICE |

Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 23 Nov 07 - 09:38 AM As promised, I'm going to post an alphabetized list of songs that have been mentioned in this thread to date {as of 7:30 AM}. Given the length of that list, I'll divide it into two posts, {A-H} and I-Z}. When it was mentioned in the post or when I'm aware that the song is known by another title, I've placed that second title in parenthesis. These lists don't include the song's composers, though that might have been helpful given the fact that there are often multiple songs with the same title. Please forgive any errors that I may have made regarding song titles and/or songs that I advertently omitted from this list. Any corrections of titles and any omissions should be posted to this thread. Needless to say, this list shouldn't be interpreted as the end of this thread. Please feel free to continue posting additional examples of religious songs as well as comments about any song that may have already been posted. Thanks again for sharing titles, lyrics, and comments about religious songs that speak to you! |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 21 Nov 07 - 12:26 AM Also, I meant to add that fwiw, the song "Jesus The Light Of The World" that I remember singing at church wasn't only sung during the Christmas season. ** Mahalia singing the phone directory would be a religious experience. -Slag I heartily agree. Here's two YouTube clips that are still available {though I'm not sure if they will also be removed}. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSHvUvlzznc Mahalia Jackson- "Precious Lord Take My Hand" and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gta4B1MBU0 Mahalia Jackson - His Eye Is On The Sparrow ** I'm unsure if I posted these links before. If so, my apologies. ** It occurs to me that it would be helpful to post an alphabetized listing of the songs in this thread so far. I'll do that as soon as possible. |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 20 Nov 07 - 11:59 PM I grew up singing a moderately uptempo song called Jesus, The Light Of The World." I've posted the words to that song below my comments. Is this the words to the song that you heard? {Sorry, I've wasn't able to find a YouTube video clip}. Although the first and third line is the same as the Christmas carol "Hark The Herald Angels Sing", the song has a different tune than that carol. In my experience, "Jesus the Lignt Of The World" was always sung in unison and not as a call & response song. JESUS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD (written by George Elderkin) Verse 1: Hark the herald angels sing, Jesus, the light of the world. Glory to the newborn king, Jesus, the light of the world. Chorus: We'll walk in the light, beautiful light, come where the dewdrops of mercy are bright. Shine all around us by day and by night; Jesus, the light of the world. Verse 2: Joyful all ye nations rise, Jesus, the light of the world. Join the triumph of the skies, Jesus, the light of the world. Chorus Verse 3: Christ by highest heaven adored, Jesus, the light of the world. Christ the everlasting Lord, Jesus, the light of the world. Chorus Verse 4: Hail the heaven born Prince of Peace, Jesus, the light of the world. Hail the Son of righteousness, Jesus, the light of the world. Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 20 Nov 07 - 06:43 PM THE LORD'S PRAYER [The Gospel of Matthew 6:9–13; the Gospel of Luke 11:2–4] Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. ** Here is a YouTube video of this passage from the New Testament: Mahalia Jackson - "Lord's Prayer" (1958) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_W3BH1sAag |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 20 Nov 07 - 06:22 PM LEANING ON THE EVERLASTING ARMS {Elisha A. Hoffman, pub.1887 ref. by Anthony J. Showalter, pub.1887} What a fellowship, what a joy divine, Leaning on the everlasting arms; What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the everlasting arms. Refrain: Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms. Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, Leaning on the everlasting arms; Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day, Leaning on the everlasting arms. What have I to dread, what have I to fear, Leaning on the everlasting arms? I have blessed peace with my Lord so near, Leaning on the everlasting arms. ** YouTube Video: Five Blind Boys Of Miss - "Leaning On The Everlasting Arm" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-KK2HdVFTw&NR "early [19]60's live gospel - Henry Johnson lead" ** Here's a Wikipedia page on this group: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Blind_Boys_of_Mississippi |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Azizi Date: 15 Nov 07 - 04:42 PM Correction: Note that the title is "Stood on the banks of The Jordan. However, until the last chorus, Jessy Dixon sang "I Stood On The Banks Of Jordan". ** I agree with your comment Mrs Banjiman that religious songs speak to us for to us for so many different reasons. Actually what you wrote is true for other songs too. That said, I appreciate folks posting examples on this thread of songs that speak to them. As a result of those posts, I've been introduced to some new {for me} songs that also speak to me. |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Mrs Banjiman Date: 15 Nov 07 - 04:28 PM What an interesting thread! Religious songs can speak to us for so many different reasons...the melody may be very moving/stirring, the lyrics might be particularly relevant for our personal situation, or the song may have good associations from when we've sung it in the past. The latter reason, I'm sure, why songs people had at their wedding or Christmas songs have been mentioned. For me I like the simplicity of "Dear Lord and Father of mankind", love the celtic tune of "Be Thou my vision" (especially the way we play it in our band at church with drums and celtic whistles) and also "What a friend we have in Jesus" because God used that song to help me find a fellow Christian when I was living in Japan and felt my faith was ebbing due to lack of fellowship. Finally, "O Love that will not let me go" - I can't sing the verse about tracing the rainbow without getting choked up!!! |
Subject: RE: Religious Songs That Speak To You From: Slag Date: 15 Nov 07 - 03:43 PM There is a great little praise song "Glorify Thy Name" by Donna Adkins, based on Psalms 86:12 that is quite singable but I really appreciate when it is done in ASL. You gotta see it to hear it. Father, we love You, We worship and adore You, (chorus) Glorify Thy name in all the earth. Glorify Thy name, glorify Thy name Glorify Thy name in all the earth! Jesus, we love You, We worship and adore You, (chorus) Spirit, we love You, We worship and adore You, (chorus) |
