I've begun to wonder - just how many Mudcatters are in their Second Childhood?

Are you a stogdy staid old curmudgeon, or do you embrace life with glee?

Your question makes the assumption that at some point we have to leave our FIRST childhood.
Well I may have my busspass but I'm still in it and wasn't intending to leave yet.

Mike.

(to be read with the voice of Plankton)

life with glee?

It's a bit like the 30 something on a flight sitting next to a 70 year old woman. When the plane starts tumbling in a thunderstorm and the 30 something guy starts screaming like a little girl, the old woman says with near bordom, "when you you get this old, things like this won't bother you."

Its a matter of freedom really. A couple years ago I had feelings of grandeur about the next project I would do like conquering the world. Now I know they will all go undone... so I'm free from caring about them.

There are no more partnerships to join that might fill in the gaps of talent or ideas. There are only those who interact from a need to brag, like calling from the Hawaii airport to "complain" about a layover or those who ask how you are as they stand on your foot and chuckle. At least there are no more torturous feelings of inadaquacy, when one finally achieves complete total 100% inadequacy.

The worst part is watching the same old bigotry being worshipped by otherwise decent people in the name of their all powerful god. For every improvement in a technology of a camera or a car or a TV there is a deevolution of compassion, acceptence and tolerence by those who successfully preach the need to isolate, punish or kill the non believer.

The best pay off is watching movies. I can watch a movie I have seen before and not have the ending given away.

I'm the wrong side of 70 and active in our local University of the Third Age (U3A) - walking, cycling, singing, music, winetasting, science & technology groups. It's a wonder I have time for Mudcat!

One of our members says it shouldn't be 'U3A', it should be 'P2C' - Playschool for the Second Childhood.

Phil

Sure that shouldn't be C2P? (You have to say it and imagine cataracts).

The late (and much missed, by me at least) H. Allen Smith wrote of two old friends meeting after some years, now both up into the 60s at least.

One asked the other, "And how do you spend your time these days?"

The other replies: "Peeing, and trying to remember the names of my friends."

For many years, I thought that was funny.

Peter

It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

My childhood continues to be happy. I can now afford more and bigger toys, but I find that I'm content with those I have. Obviously there is something very wrong with me since I don't want a giant motor home or a set of jetskis or snow machines or a giant SUV or a cigarette boat.

I'm content with my yo-yo.

I am happily still working my way through my first childhood too. If anything the mature version is better as I have more experience and know when I am enjoying myself which makes things even better.

Yep. Still on the first one. Don't need a second one. The poor shnook who did all the responsible things wore out the body though. Kinda makes the continuation of the childhood a hard thing but that doesn't mean I'm gonna quit!

"Are you a stogdy staid old curmudgeon, or do you embrace life with glee?"
That's like asking "is it colder in Alaska or on Tuesday?"

I think I can plead guilty to both non-alternatives (though I'm not really sure I've ever been stogdy. Anyhow, I went into the folk-CD-selling business when I was over 70--which I guess is sort of childish.(Started Digitrad as a stripling of 59)

My grandchildren tell me I'm still in my first, but I heard a quote from Brian Bedford (Artisan)"Growing old is compulsory, growing up is not. That will do for me.

That's funny, Bonecruncher, because today I feel like a 70 yr old...

Somewhere about the house I have a badge that says 'I feel 100'.   I used to wear it a lot, and when people would ask about it, I would run my hands up and down their arms and say '47...'

Got an awful lot of laughs from people with that, not to mention the odd pint or two to drink.... Ah... happy days. I must look it out again.
