A current TV advert (UK) for Specsavers, depicts a quaint sheep farming scene (for reasons best known to the marketing people).

The background music is a rather lovely version of 'Mo Ghile Mear'. I was wondering if anyone knew the singer. It sounds Maggie Boyle-ish, but I'm quite happy to be proved wrong.

Haven't seen the ad yet (is it an insult to sheep??!!) ;-D
but Mary Black did a lovely version of it on an early recording. Perhaps it's hers?

Thanks Bonnie Shaljean - no, I've heard Mary's version - definitely not hers.

Managed to answer my own question - Una Palliser:

Specsavers Ad.

This Internet thingy is jolly useful, but it'll never catch on.

In this version & others on Ytube, I hear it sung as 'My geela mare'

Is this the correct pronunciation?

Crudely phonetcally: Muh-gill-eh mar

muh - as in MUD
gill - as on a FISH
eh - as in, eh....
mar - as in MARK

There are regional variations - but the above is enough to pass muster anyuwhere.

Regards

"is it an insult to sheep??!"
No, but it's an insult to Gaelic singing

It's an insult to the dog, the sheep and all Scots, whether Gaelic speaking or not. If I had ever thought of going to Specsavers this would be enough to put me off.

It's a gross insult to elderly people with failing eyesight, Scots or not. I think the ad is immoral.

For the question above about pronounciation, this is how it sounds in the Munster dialect;

Mo Ghile Meár

The last "Guest" must never have heard Ishbell sing.
