Well, I remember seeing more than a few of those brittle social occasions when I was growing up and my parents were hosting them or going to them...my mother dithering around on the edge of a nervous breakdown in a frenzy of acute concern as to whether everything was as perfect as it HAD to be....but I have managed to totally avoid such dinner parties in my own adult life.

I just don't make it as a fully-fledged successful White Person, I guess... ;-)

I'm a conscientious objector.

Good frikking GOD!!!....I read more of the articles. Whoever did that page has put some real effort into observing and cataloguing the habits, insecurities, mindgames, and pretensions of "White People".

You can feel a vague nausea building as you work your way down from one article through the next...and you realize that, yes, you do share some of these characteristics and foibles ascribed to "White People", although thankfully, you don't share all of them.

For instance: Yes, I was a nerd in high school and I had a really miserable time there, but I have since survived the experience and moved on...with my mental health, well, reasonably intact. Sort of.

Missing items seems to include exploring one's white heritage, supporting one's own cultural practices, morris dancing, folk singing, being 'white' artists i.e adding to the literature, music repertoire, learning foreign languages, preserving the heritage.
And did I miss drinking oneself silly and taking a pride in one's ignorance, illiberal attitudes and philistinism.

Actually, if you read the entire blog--90 items, I believe--some of Autolycus' concerns are addressed--in the wonderfully dry style of the site.

I ran across the ""Stuff" site a few weeks ago. It's a true treasure--should be a model for Web humor.

"....to see ourselves as others see us" --even if possibly a bit exaggerated.

I dunno, I think it's kind of icky, and it seems to be more about class issues than race anyway, and assumptions that white/yuppie are the same thing.

The humor is sort of funny, but the premise is icky IMO.

I gave my list because I would have thought if the arguments white people make agin forigners, and what about us, and all that, were really about our white heritage, then what I listed would be exactly the kinds of things I would expect to see on a site like that.

So it's significant (to me) and a mystery as to why so few aaare on that site.

i look forward to learning why they are missing.

That was good for some laughs, but obviously the author has a hard time distinguishing magazine articles from real life.

In a similar way, I saw an article in the paper about a band of black musicians who play American traditional music. The reporter was just blown away. How could this happen? The reporter had never seen a black fiddler on TV or the movies, therefore assumed that black people have never had 'permission' to play jigs, reels, etc.

Some research would show that black musicians played for dances along with white musicians - but why bother with research?

Sometimes I get deadpan humour like a shot. But in this world where things that ought to be humour turn out to be real (like the soldier who said 'The village had to be destroyed to be saved'), then it's sometimes not so obvious.

I chuckled a few times, so that proves I have a sense of humor. (Oh god, I'm so relieved!). But much of it is shallow, slick and irritating. If someone wrote like that about black people, there would be a furore.

Reminds me of a chat with a relation who was talking about someone not being quite normal. (Told this one before, I know)

I asked who was normal and he said,"Me ! !" like a shot. I said I see and apart from you who alse, and he said, "Nobody! !" just as quick.

Lots and lots of people think like that about things like abnormality, bias, et cetera, as nauseum.

I am reminded of the time my office all went to a comedy club in Washington DC. Guy in my office whose idea it was informed me he wasn't gonna sit with ME. I had a turquoise Indian print dress on and long reddish hair. He informed me that at least one comedian was going to nail my white retro-70s ass.

Not ONE joke! They harassed a white guy with a bunch of black guys (he was the token), but I was completely ignored. Maybe I looked scary or something. People often assume my attempt at keeping a straight face is just me being a stone cold bitch with no sense of humor. Now, I can DO that, but I wasn't. It was a good show, even if nobody picked on me. I even saw one guy on TV a few months later.

The way I figure it, the funniest thing around is typically your own self, and if other people want to laugh, I'll laugh with them. I think the site's funny. I think the world would be a better place if people who had a choice between laughing at stereotypes and getting offended chose laughter.

These little girls are sisters! They have the same forebears. What race are they? Is the light one supposed to like Bach while the dark one likes rap? Are they supposed to have different accents? Is it okay if they both have rhythm?

This unusual pair shows that much of what we call 'white' or 'black' is simply custom which is imposed on people.

(I remember a book I read on a black gang member in San Diego. Fellow gang members objected to his girlfriend because 'She doesn't talk like a black person.' As if there is only one way for a black person to talk = their way.)
