I heard on the local all news station that California will be the first state to ban the use of trans-fats in restaurants and bakeries by 2010 and 2011. Done deal! The damn state can't pass a budget, looks to raise taxes and usage fees (taxes) every chance it gets, can't educate our kids…but they can ban trans-fats. Big whoop! Also, a termed out state senator is trying for a state wide ban on incandescent light bulbs and plastic grocery bags.

Yeah, that's why we sent them to Sacramento. No wonder I don't vote very often for liberals or progressives. I think they feel that since they can't get important things done, they need to do 'something', even if it makes them (legislators) look stupid.

John on the Sunset Coast,

I posted to Mucat a few years back that California had banned top-loading washings (for clothes) because they used more water than the front-loading types. I said that the ban may never have been fully enforced due to consumer outrage and lack of supply concerning front-loaders, but can you confirm the attempted ban? I don't just make things up, despite claims to that effect.

LA Times in January of this year says that law for low-water washers was preempted by the feds and Cal has a suit pending against the feds. Not certain if it involves a ban on top loaders but it very well may be.

Actually, that was to be a national ban. Well, not exactly. Top loaders are permitted if they meet water usage parameters. To achieve that, most manufacturers shortened fill cycles. To meet energy standards many eliminated or shortened wash/rinse cycles (which were not standardized anyway).

Front load machines are quite effective now, save beaucoup energy and water, and are much easier on the clothes. They usually pay for the extra cost in a couple of years, unless you go really fancy-schmancy.

Gol-ly, somebody mentioned something I actually know something about. Thank you, PDQ.

dyxlelia--that's easy for you to write. LOL
