Subject: BS: Observations From the Sunset Coast From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 11 Sep 08 - 11:48 AM From time to time, I'll have a comment about vagaries of life...enjoy. John "Boy Suspended for Using Broken Pencil Sharpener" Set--up: Boy uses broken pencil sharpener to sharpen pencil in class. Apparently the little metal blade was either loose or overly exposed. Boy given 2 day suspension from school for having a blade in school. Quote--"School administrators are stuck in the precarious position between the district's zero tolerance policy against having weapons at school and common sense." Attributed to a Hilton Head Island Education Spokesman in the "Island Packet." Comment—When it comes to a choice between common sense and zero tolerance, common sense loses nearly every time. _________________________ "Lipstick on Animals" Sarah Palin tells us the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is lipstick. Barack Obama counters that you can put lipstick on a pig, and it's still a pig. Some Republicans think that this is a direct slam to Gov. Palin. Comment—She made lipstick and animals fair game. Comment—Whom does a three hundred pound gorilla wearing lipstick kiss? Anyone she wants to. |

Subject: RE: BS: Observations From the Sunset Coast From: PoppaGator Date: 11 Sep 08 - 12:07 PM Thanks for the laughs, John. We need 'em! At last Sunday's Saints game in the Superdome, two fellows from the Sunset Coast were sitting behind me. While watching their Buccaneers lose (heh heh), we talked about hurricanes, and they observed how their/your area was almost immune, in contrast to most of the rest of Florida and the other Gulf Coast states. To hit Tampa, a hurricane would have to enter the Gulf, veer to the right, and complete a nearly 180-degree turnaround ~ unlikely to ever happen. Of course, you guys are subject to nasty weather from storms that slam that other Florida cost and then travel overland to your part of the world. Uncomfortable, sure, but not devastating. Congratulations on your choice of habitat! |

Subject: RE: BS: Observations From the Sunset Coast From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 30 Sep 09 - 02:11 AM A long time ago during the Carter er of soaring interest rates and stagflation, the President opined that future generations of Americans might no have enjoy a continuing higher standard of living than their parents. I attended Jewish High Holy Days services which ended Monday night. On Rosh Hashana (New Year) we recite a prayer, the "U'netaneh Tokef" In part, the prayer states that God's decree as to who will live and who will die (amongst a list of decrees) is written (in the book of life) on Rosh Hashana and (the decree) is sealed on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement. While I normally try to keep politics out of religion, I could not help but paraphrase the prayer in considering the future of America...By Jimmy Carter It Was Written; By Barack Obama It Is Sealed. The prayer also offers the hope that this decree may be altered during the 10 days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur through introspection and atonement. One hopes the American decree can be altered by the President and the Democratic congress coming to their senses in dealing with the country's problems, real and perceived. |
